12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

Appearance - Red amber body. Dark and hazy. Not much of a head until the very end, but it manages to hang on and even create some nice lacing.

Smell - Musty pine hops with a strong caramel malt presence. It seems like this could be a sweet one. Diacetyl in the nose too. Hmm.

Taste - Yeah, the diacetyl is back here. Once I noticed it, I can't ignore it. It's not as sweet as I feared, but there's a lot more malt than there is aromatic hop to make it anything special. It's "balanced" I suppose. Would be much better without that diacetyl.

Mouthfeel - Bitter finish. I'm not really having any trouble drinking it, despite its flaws.

Overall - At first I thought I could finish it. Then I started struggling. Eventually I poured the last quarter down the drain.

Pours a clear, dark and golden amber with very little head and no lacing. Sufficient carbonation for a pleasant mouthfeel, and without the oiliness sometimes seen at this high an ABV. That alcohol is well hidden until a slight burn in the background of the finish.

A very mild aroma is malt-forward with delightful citrus notes, specifically grapefruit. Caramelized malt sweetness at the beginning of the taste trend into a delightful citrus hop body, including both grapefruit rind / zest as well as the raw fruit. This yields a delightfully hoppy finish alongside the 8% ABV.

A beer I'd recommend.

Aroma: Moderate piney hop aroma with perfume-like alcohol aromatics. Mild citrus rind notes.

Appearance: Deep brick red cloudy pour with a low white head that retains well.

Flavor: Mild leafy and earthy hop bitterness up front with some caramel sweetness that off-sets the hoppy punch. Balance is firmly bitter. Finish is clean and dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Slightly oily due to hop resins with a touch of alcohol heat.

Overall impression: Dancing a fine line between a Double IPA and an American Barleywine. Regardless, a good beer with lots of hop flavor and enough malt to balance. Worth a try.

Appearance is a murky brown with a very fluffy white head and great lacing.

Nose is sweet cream and hops, with some almond and orange zest.

Taste is tart with lime and pine. The hops are sharp-tasting, but not overly biting. The malt has a maple flavor. There is also some cream soda.

Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, with medium-light carbonation and a clean, but slightly oily finish.

Overall, it is a very creamy double with good balance.

No enjoy by date.
Slow pour into a standard pint glass.

A: Poured to a thin, light beige head that disapated quickly. The brew is dark copper color and very clear.

S: The aroma is a sweet caramel and sweet bready malt blend with just a hint of boozy alcohol.

T: The taste combines flavors of sweet and bready malt and yeast with an earthy hops along with just a sprig of piney hops. There is also just a bit of alcohol heat.

M: It has a medium body, and a small amount of carbonation.

O: A solid IPA. Another IPA that is balanced at a high level of both hops and malt. It is earthy without being bitter. The touch of alcohol heat sharpens the hops and malt flavors. The flavors are not too complex and therefore blend together well to create a bold IPA.

Handsome not-quite-clear amber in the tall tulip. Sudsy in the mouth but not much head. Aroma is a real knockout of big fresh hops.

Hoppy from the start, and bitter to the finish. Rather rich with a thick mouthfeel. Not too sweet, though the malt is plentiful. On the neck is printed "Bottled 02/23/12." Resins and the big pine hoppy blast. Lots of aromatics. Gets pretty bitter after awhile, and 12 oz is more than enough. Good mouthfeel for a few sips, but then it starts going numb from the hops.

From the 12 oz bottle bought at Food and Friends in Philadelphia. The current label features a more scary Hoppy Man and lists the ABV at 8%.

12 Oz poured into a duvel tulip

A- Murky dark brown/amber with an off white half finger head. Nice lacing. A dank looking IPA.

S- Judging by the smell id say mine is middle aged. An assault of hop flavors up front. A bit of pine but mostly citrus, a lot of pineapple and mango but a ton of grapefruit and overly ripened citrus fruits. Malt profile is hidden by hops but its pretty sweet smelling.

T- A lot of bitterness up front followed up by a hint of a bready, light maltiness. The rest of the taste here is hop dominant. A big wallop of Grapefruit. Some other citrus notes and a hint of pine as well but grapefruit dominates all. Bitterness is relatively low considering the hop flavors, so kudos to the brew master.

M- Bitter, well carbonated. For an 8% IPA, I think it should be slightly more drinkable but its not overbearing. Aftertaste is dry but not that great.

O- A solid DIPA, wish I had it a bit fresher, I can tell mine has seen better days. Not nearly as good as their Hop Rocket DIPA in my opinion but not disappointing either.

Recieved as an extra from StlThrash. Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Deschutes tulip.

A - Pours a hazy copper color with a finger of a light tan head. Not too much lacing is holding on.

S - Citrus grapefruit and a combination of pineapple and appricot. On second smell, I'm also getting a little caramel and butterscotch.

T/M - More apricot than grapefruit on the tongue. Decent amount of bitterness that sticks on the edge of my tongue. I also get a slight alcohol warmth. Medium mouthfeel, good carbonation.

O - A really good DIPA. My only complaint is that this brew is a little maltier than I would prefer my DIPAs to be. I would get this one again...if I could. Thanks Todd for tossing this one in.

This pours with a warming glowing-amber color. There’s a big, resiny piney hop nose. The aroma is all hops. Might as well call it hopnose? The flavor has a nice, thick, chewy mouthfeel. It’s piney, oily almost, and coats the mouth with hoppy goodness. Dry and thick without being heavy. Mmmm.

Bottle poured into Pint glass

A - Pours a coppery-amber with a slim head that dissipates quickly and leaves a pleasantly laced surface.

S - Mostly just hops on the nose here with some very slight tropical fruit notes hidden in there.

T - Again, mostly just bitter, piney hops on the tongue as well. There's a citrusy zest in there too, but becomes unbalanced by the strong heat afterwards. Suprisingly, I don't mind the heat on this DIPA.

M - Very sticky mouthfeel with low-carbonation. Can definitely feel the heat of the alcohol after each swallow.

O - An interesting take on the DIPA. What it lacks in a balance it makes up for with uniqueness. Probably wouldn't buy again but am enjoying it at the moment.

A: Dark for an ipa. Very dark red with a weak head. Looks wattery
S: Floral smell comes through. Nothing too spectacular
T: Tastes like an average IPA. Good floral notes but the spiciness is week and the lingering bitterness is unpleasent. Alcohol has a surprisingly nice finish.
M: Sits very well. Medium body and not watery like I was expecting.

Overall not that great of a showing here. The IPA aspect of this beer is pretty weak as the spiciness is not very present. Yet somehow there is a gross lingering bitterness that leaves me looking for a sip of water.

An off-white cap of head about a finger tall develops over this beer that's a very ruddy thick dark orange. Heavy foam stays and deposits very rocky lacing as it recedes.
The smell offers a great hops bouquet, intermingling citric orange and ruby red with caramel malts. It's leafy in the back and, on further investigation, reminds me very much of mint leaf.
Hops take center stage and while this beer isn't a bruiser it's undeniably solid. Hops are, again, mostly citrus and balanced well by malts sweetness but there's an additional unsual sweetness it takes me a minute to realize is like chewing on a spearmint leaf. It works in complementary fashion here. A bit of alcohol pulls through in the finish.
A well-rounded mouthfeel shows off some creaminess in a medium body. It's more smooth than crisp, but it does nip.

Bought a 12 fl oz bottle of this from LOLA in St. Louis, MO for $6.50. Poured from the green labeled bottle w/ a Hop Man on the front into a 16oz Stella Artois Gold Rimmed Tulip Glass. Has no freshness date to be found.

Aroma- Has a nice grapefruit aroma that doesn't overload the nose but lets more attributes come around. Seems there is a great amount of citrus, combo of American and noble hops, and has a nice clean, maltiness in the background. Almost perfect but should have more punch for a 2X IPA.

Appearance- Pours a 2 finger head that has good retention. Has a deep amber colored body with some hazing but not much. Leaves thick lacing afterwards.

Flavor- A good, strong hop flavor starts this out with light sweetness behind it. Citrus is a huge attribute in here and has a medium-high bitterness level. Not much more and definitely not enough complexity to make it a big time brew for me.

Mouthfeel- Medium-Full Bodied, Medium Carbonation, and then hits the palate stronger than you can imagine! Makes up for the taste!

Overall Impression- I'll tell you what. You want a beer to hit your palate and finish off your taste buds, go for this one! The taste is pretty average and seems like only an American IPA. Would like to enjoy on-tap and have had many times before but my first time reviewing.

Poured from a bomber into a Sam Adams pint.

A: Pours a hazy, copper orange color with 1/2 finger of pale tan head. Some retention and lace.

S: Sherry, caramel and spice. Not very IPA-like, but really good.

T: Caramel up front, but then moves to a bitter pine that slowly fades back to the caramel, with both lingering in the aftertaste. Overall more of a hoppy barleywine than a Douple IPA, but still good. Bit of alcohol on the finish as well. Halfway through the glass, a little cola joins in.

M: Not too heavy, smooth with nice oil.

O: Couldn't find the freshness info on the label, so wondering whether this is past its prime. Doesn't taste bad, but coming across more as a barleywine than a double IPA. Regardless, a pleasant beer and one I'd be happy to buy again. First beer from Arcadia, and eager to try more.

A & S: sweet malts and piney & citrus hops. The smell isn’t too strong but its pretty darn nice smelling. Hazy orange-red colored beer. Off-white head that doesn’t hang around that long

T & M: piney hops come through huge in the taste. Pretty robust, reminds me a lot of hop crisis. Full bodied and smooth going down and then a sharp bit of carbonation hits your tongue. Well backed up malty tones and the body adds a good amount of chewiness to it.

O: very similar to a lot of doubles, but its still really good. I could drink this beer all day! I would also recommend it to anyone, I feel this beer is a bit underrated.

12oz bottle, booty from a trip last month to Detroit.

This beer pours a hazy medium golden amber hue, with one finger of dense foamy pale beige head, which leaves but a few thin streaks of lace around the glass upon its demise. It smells sweet, sweet, sweet - sweet grapefruit and orange hops, sweet bready caramel malt, and sweet fuck-all else. The taste is leafy, kind of musty citrus hops, bready caramel and cereal grain malt, and a simmering edgy booziness. The carbonation is moderate, if a bit underwhelming, the body medium weight, and walking the line between agreeably smooth and tangentially cloying. It finishes rather off-dry, the sweet (one beat this time) bready malt given a pretty good run by some latent sassy, yet still grade-school bitter grassy, somewhat metallic hops.

While doing a bang-up job of sublimating the DIPA-worthy ABV, more care should have been attributed to the character of the big malt/hop interplay - this just seems kind of phoned in. Not bad, some hopeful good points, but not something I would seek out again.

Hopefully I will have a mouth full of hops when this one has completed it's transition to my face. The pour didn't yield much of a head, more big bubbles than anything. The color is a rich coppery red, cloudy as can be.

I feel like a kid again after taking my first whiff. The initial passion fruit sweetness is packed full of fruit snack and bubblegum flavors. After I sit and try to make sense of a perplexing aroma, I realize I can't detect any alcohol or harshness, from chilled to room temp. Ripened fruit, toasty caramel, and wood all dance the floor.

This almost drinks like a barleywine, the malt profile seems so sophisticated with sweet and toasty flavors I almost forget the hops. Overripe fruit and oak cement my feelings that this may be a tad bit past the date for a DIPA. There is no date on the bottle for me to verify. Nonetheless, the bitterness is there, it's just not the citrusy grapefruit bomb I was anticipating, and it is well challenged by everything else going on.

The body is medium, but the feel is confounding. The carbonation has no inhibitions; it starts crisp and begins to leave a cottony sensation. A chalky yet resiny earthy aftertaste that lingers for infinity.

As far as a DIPA goes... I'm not sure I'm convinced by the hop profile. Perhaps it's the age of the beer (unknown), but I am sure that I like it. The ease in which the alcohol is masked is impressive, as well as the maturity of the backbone. Whatever phylum, genus, or species this one falls in to.... it's good.

Had on-tap at Hopcat. Served in a tulip glass.

A: Pours a dark amber, almost brown with a nice film ring around the edges. Splotchy lace is left down the glass.

S: Great grapefruit and pine shine right away with a very integrated malt backbone.

T: The taste is just as balanced as the nose. The caramel malt shines upfront, but then gives way to a nice sweet tropical fruit and there is a little resiny hop on the backend.

M: Very smooth and creamy. Medium bodied with a bitter pine finish left on the palate.

O: A very solid offering from Arcadia. Very well balanced and would like to have again.

A - It pours dark amber bordering on copper in color. It has an inch of beige head.

S - I get a balance of caramel malt and citrus hops.

T - My first taste was resiny with piney grapefruit. As I drink more the malt seems to come forward more.

M - Moderate with low carbonation

O - It seems to be a well balanced double with malt and plenty of citrus and pine to round it out.

Surprisingly dark pour with a lot of pine smell. I found it very complex on the front of the tongue--floral, citrus, caramel--but somehow in the finish there's an overwhelming bitterness which almost seems to be drying out your throat. I can't recommend it over the long haul with that finish... damn! I forget all the good tastes on the front because of that finish. Probably won't buy again.

Poured from a 12oz bottle from a mixed 6pak into my 12oz beer glass -

Appearance - Poured a nice finger of thick lite amber head. Color is a deep copper, slightest bit of haze

Smell - Whoah! Big grapefruit, pine (and spice?) right when I opened the bottle. More of the same from the glass, with more sweetness in the nose from the glass.

Taste - Wow, big hops going on here. Hop flavors are big yellow grapefruit and pine, with a little of the earthy and grassy flavors coming long into the finish. A nice muted honey/carmel sweetness plays in the background, barely keeping the hops in check. I'm getting a little dryness and alcohol in the finish too.

Mouthfeel - Medium carb makes this very drinkable, and somewhat smooth. Sweetness in the center of the tongue, carb crispness on the sides, citrusy hoops cover the tongue, with bitter, dry pine at the back of the tongue. Hops are lingering and chewy between sips.

Overall - This is a very hop-forward DIPA imho. I prefer a little more sweetness in my DIPAs, but those who like strong hops will love this. I am really enjoyng this actually, and will buy it occasionally when I'm in the mood to assault and destroy my tastebuds with big chewy hops - give this one a try - this ale is perfectly named.

12 oz from Hoosick. Brewed 9/13/10, so just about a year old, which is not good.

Looks: a fairly turbid amber brown. there is some good foam retention. not a lot, but enough to look good

Whiff: mmm, reminds me of first time I had Unearthly. it has faded a little, but all the hints are still there.

Yum: unngh, this is why it's good to keep a beer inventory so you know what's more ephemeral. there is a loss of flavor, assumedly. but I would consider this a great DIPA to have a few of. it's not overbearing in the flavor department, but it is tasty enough and the alcohol is camouflaged enough to make it rather well-rounded. not a stellar example, but not a bad one either, and note that Arcadia has made a much better label for this bottle, replacing the gaelic gnome 11th grade art project.

Slurp: OK. there is a crisp refreshingness here that is odd, but, crisp and refreshing.

Overall: try it, you'll like it, but it's not the best in the category.

A: pours almost brown in color with a one inch off-white head. Lacing and slight layer of fine bubbles stay for the glass.

S: smells of pine and bitter hops, some citrus, and malt.

T: first I get the pine and floral hops, then the bitterness, and it finishes with pale malt.

M: starts smooth, then you get smacked with the carbonation to bring out the bitterness. Crisp feeling for a medium bodied beer.

O: drinkable, low ABV for a double IPA, about $11 for a 4 pack. Overall it's a solid beer, but it's not worth getting again for me. I could see how some might prefer this, but it's just not my kind of Double IPA.
