Solid looking beer: dark, burnished copper with a solid tan head of sticky foam. Pungent aromas of grapefruity hops. Sweet and mildly acidic up front. Juicy, resinous hops in the middle and a not-too-bitter aftertaste. This DIPA leans towards fresh hop flavour over inflated IBUs. I find this to be a very drinkable DIPA, although I suppose that also means it's not as "big" as some others. Nice balance of hop flavour and abv, with enough malt to hold it together. Very smooth body.

A: Pours a lightly hazy deep copper to amber in color with some moderate amounts of visible carbonation and some orange highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy head that slowly reduces to a medium large medium thick patch, a very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer, and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of caramel malts with moderate aromas of pine hops.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate amount of caramel malt flavors that contribute some sweetness. That is quickly followed up by some moderate flavors of pine hops and just a touch of herbal hops. Light to moderate amounts of lingering bitterness.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Chewy with some light amount of alcohol warming and dryness in the finish.

O: Overall this beer is pretty well balanced between the sweetness of the malts and the bitterness of the hops. The alcohol is pretty well hidden (slightly present in the mouthfeel) and the beer is fairly easy to drink.

Bottled 2/22/13, poured into a snifter for tasting.

Amber/copper/gold coloring, with hints of ruby red grapefruit. Not particularly clear at all. Foamy/soapy head, sorta tan, but light; dissipates pretty quickly.

Nothing special or terribly outstanding about the aroma I'm getting here. It's all a bit flat, but does not smell bad, it's just that there is nothing exceptional about the smell. I get light hints of pine, citrus, and malt.

Taste is similar, but with a nice bitterness to it, and a piney/earthy aftertaste. Very muted, mostly just the hoppiness is noticeable.

Feel is decently smooth, with a bitter finish. But there is also a syrupy character to it, a thickness that is both sweet and bitter.

Overall, it's just a few levels below what I would call a really good DIPA. I don't hate it, and I'm sure I'd try it again. It's very average in the end.

Appearance: Copper ruby IPA. Excellent layer of white lacing. Very thick as well.

Smell: Sweet honey and caramel with a hint of maple syrup. Easily the sweetest DIPA I've ever smelled. Definitely malty for the style, but the maple creates a pine-line resin smell that is perfect for this.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Sweet pine, almost tastes like agave. A bit of a bubblegum twang as well. Alcohol hits you pretty quickly with this. Some orange rind in the finish. Very pleasant mouthfeel. Nice crispness and a very smooth finish. Not too heavy.

Overall: Very underrated.
