Pours a cloudy brownish orange with a small khaki head on top. Quite dark appearance. Big hop nose upfront..orange and grapefruit with a slight hint of caramel sweetness and some pine. Nice!

Alright you sons-of-bitches...which one of you took my hops!!! Subtle citrusy hops flow over my tongue along with weak caramel, slightly bready malt background. The flavor does not hold up to what I expected from the nose on this one. This beer is a cock tease....the nose draws you in and gets you excited...but once you take a sip you're suddenly left with blue balls.

Mouthfeel has some creaminess to it, but it's too thin for me. This is more akin to a regular IPA. As for drinkability...I enjoyed trying this brew, but I'm not really excited for another. Thanks to kmpitz2 for the chance to try this one.

Bottle acquired is trade with BBB63 (thanks!).

Poured a dark and hazy amber color with a huge (5 finger) tan head. Aromas of juicy oranges, pine, pineapple and light pepper. Tastes of oranges, pine, caramel and pineapple. Medium bitter with a sweet balance to it. Enjoyable.

A- had huge head on top, almost overflowing my duvel snifter. actually when i tried to pour the last ounce in after the rest of the head settled, the whole thing took off again this time overflowing, really damn annoying.

S- smells pretty hoppy still after all this time. strong maltiness as well.

T- very malty, the hops still exist in the nose, but only balance out the malt in the mouth. still a tasty malt though, interesting flavors i havent found in other beers, theres slightly sweet fruit notes that have come in and give it a light sherry characteristic that tasts pretty good.

M- thick body, had a high carbonation i guess from the annoying head, but it was low by the time it hit my mouth

D- not bad, decent beer, glad to have gotten it, def better fresh. its almost a barleywine, but not enough complexity.

Acquired via trade from tangfoot, so a big Thank You goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a hazy light brown color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of floral hops, caramel, brown sugar and alcohol.

T: The taste has a strong sweetness up front with flavors of caramel, brown sugar and citrus. Then a pretty heavy hops bitterness comes in. I found it surprising that the hops held up so well, given the age of the beer, but it seems to have become nicely balanced. The malt character is very hearty and there's a little bit of an alcohol sting. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and very crisp, medium body, high carbonation, slightly sticky finish.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this might not be the type of beer to pound down several of but I found it to be a decent beer to relax with and enjoy. I also thought the age has done it some good.

This beer is uselessly overcarbonated, I am barely able to get one inch of beer into a full British pint glass, the rest of course is foam. To say that the head is voluminous is a vast understatement, but it is. It is also pillowy and a full tan color. The beer itself is a hazy orangish copper color. The aroma is quite hoppy, which is nice and has notes of pine and something that seems a bit sweet and a bit spicy as well.

The taste is quite sweet with a soft, fruity note that is reminiscent of raisins and plums. The finish has a bit of alcohol to it, actually it is even a bit hot. The beer is of course hoppy, I get notes of sweetened lemon citrus type notes, some notes of tangerine, and some typical grapefruity. The hop bitterness is apparent in the finish and there is a bit of tannic astringency here as well. Interestingly enough, there is almost a note of something that reminds me of cinnamon. It is definitely from the hops and I have also found similar notes in Yulesmith that only show up with a few months of age, but then quickly disappears. Despite the sweetness of this beer it is fairly light and drinkable.

Now Quaffing: Arcadia Batch #999 "Hop Fueled"

My first offering from Arcadia. Pours a hazed sepia with a good amount of yeast sediment peppered throughout. Carbonation is mild and the doesn't stick around long. Lacing is sticky and has no problems remaining after each sip. Aromas are an oily pine with a slight sweet floral character. The taste brings forth a nice dose of the resiny pine hops and sweet grapefruit. Mouthfeel is fairly full and very slick with each sip--nice and smooth. Each sip finishes somewhat sweet and slightly dry with just a touch of bitterness lingering. I would believe you if you told me this was a hybrid of English and American IPA styles, as the hop profile seems to suggest influences from both. I wish I could get more of this one, because its a nice change over some of the sharper domestic IPAs and DIPAs.

Appearance: The abyssmal crimson of a toasty double IPA. Sticky beige head that leaves plenty of lacey luster. Cloudy with a resinous viscosity that displays particles suspended within. A few select plump bubbles bobble their way through what does not appear to be a homogeneous body of ale. This beer seems to be layered.

Smell: Heaps of citric grapefruit pings come gusting out of the glass at first nosing. Burnt pine and caramel constituents congregate with the immense citrus in an alcoholic vapor swirl that has me ready to shrink down and dive into the glass.

Taste: Wonderfully vibrant with grapefruit and the embittering properties that hops bestow when strewn about so generously. Utterly absorbing and flavourful. Tons of acidic activity. Through it all, a discreet yet seemingly appropriate malt presence is revealed. The cumulative effect of the combined entities is superb.

Mouthfeel: Worthy of the term "chewy" that is loosely tossed around in space. Coating of the oropharynx in a sheath of lasting character throughout the drinking. Teeth enveloped in residue.

Drinkability: I am filled with great sorrow that I am nearing the end of my odyssey with this glass. This brew was a delight to drink. I am left to ponder what it was like as a younger beer. I am further regretful of the fact that I will not know what it would have been like at a greater degree of age. A pleasure was had by myself.

My second review of this beer. This first review was conducted on a store-aged bottle, this one is on a bottle provided by Eyedrinkale, as part of BIF20. Thanks for the second opprotunity!

Pours a half finger light tan head over a miserably cloudy reddish rust liquid. Smells pine-sol citrus hoppy with some grapefruit pith and a faint caramel underneath. Tastes Better than I recall. Starts piney hop before malt sweet jumps in. Caramel and biscuit. This fades as hops re-establish themselves. At late stages this beer is bitter and citrus hoppy, but I also get a faint tinge of munich malt and yeast. The aftertaste has a bit of carbonation acrid and sour malty hoppy pine-sol. Bitterness is in line with the flavors, although I find the flavors unpleasant. Md-thick body and mild, but sharp, carbonation.

Overall, pine-sol medicinal. Not a great offering. Better than I remember, and a challenging mix of flavors, but not something I found enjoyable.

Edit: I just compare my reviews. Funny how I see this beer better now than what I remember, but I scored it higher last time. Goes to show what and expanded palette and changing preferences can do.

I was expecting a real hop bomb here, but it was much more subdued than anticipated. Shockingly well balanced, it struck me as a Doubled English style IPA than the over the top American style. The malt in this beer actually stands up to the hops toe to toe. Piney hops lead before a solid malty middle fades to a moderately clean finish. The mouthfeel really surprised me too, it was solid, but without any of the syrupy sensation in the finish it made me expect.

12oz bottle obtained via trade with CRJMellor. Thanks for the opportunity...

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 3/4" beige head over the murky dark amber brew. Head pretty nicely, and lacing is excellent. Aroma is sweet, citrus, and pine. They don't seem to all go together, but that's what I'm finding. Taste seems to have any sweetness I thought I smelled, and we've more or less got a lemon-fresh pine thing going here. Aftertaste is just not good. Mouthfeel is somewhat thin, and drinkability is not so great due to the many above concerns. Had high hopes, but this one has let me down...

12oz. bottle poured into a tulip-style glass. It pours a hazy brownish orange color with four huge fingers of head. There's lots of yeast chunks in it, and lots of lacing left on the glass. The smell is fairly light, not much going on. There is some citrusy hop aromas in there though. The taste is very bitter in hop flavor. Even though I love me some hops, the hops here almost overpower everything else. It's kind of one dimensional. A hint of alcohol on the finish. The mouthfeel is decently thick and strong. The drinkability is fairly good. It's an average double IPA.

Murky looking crimson tone. Thin white head. Not much light penetrates. Aroma's just there. Average. If anything, I get some rust tones. (Oxidation maybe?) Onto the tasting... There might be a bit of oxidation, but not much. This is moreso just an unappealing DIPA to me. It's like PineSol mixed with adhesive resin. The more I taste, the more I think this really sucks. This has chemical tastes written all over it. This is the first one in a while that I'm actually contemplating on whether to dump it or not. They quote on the bottle, "Hop Fueled." It's fueled alright, but not with hops. More like Gasoline, Jet Fuel, Outboard Motor Fuel, Funny Car Fuel...Fuck, John Force could turn over 350+ mph using this shit in his tank.

Gotta thank cokes anyway. At the time he gave me one, he had not tried it yet and didn't know the horror...

The color was fresh polished copper, with a light head. the aroma pulls you in with its citrus and grapefruit. the flavor is malt, hops/citrus/grapefruit, minerally, spicy, carmel.

goes down smooth, good blend of hop bitterness and aroma. i would not call it a double ipa. michigan is a green state (hop head party) and this would be fine as a american ipa. but not a double in my book. body not rich enough, and would need more aroma, maybe more carmel flavor.

Muddied burnt sienna with a sticky puff of bleached tan.
Big hop-aided nose of pine resin, tin, and burnt watermelon and nothing else.
Enters with a feeble malt that yields brown sugar, peach, and water(logged)melon. Toastier in the middles with the requisite Arcadia butter diacetyl. Hops from here on out. Bitter herbs, and concerntrated pine juice. Hops, strangely, are mostly cut short on the finish, with just some lingering quinine bitterness and a sense of scalded butter.
A medium bodied brew that, due to a general lack of carbonation and a greater lack of finesse, drinks like melted hop gin jello shots.
This is too out of sorts, presenting not so much as overhopped (although it certainly is) as lacking any attention at all to the malt end. Or any attention whatsoever.
Here's to a better #1000.

Pours a hazy orange-tinted amber with a sizeable foamy beige head. Aroma is very citrusy, lots of juicy orange but with a certain malty sweetness to it. Thin head lasts to the bottom of the glass, moderate lacing.

Taste is very bitter and hoppy, lots of citrus up front. Some very small caramelized malt flavor comes through behind the hop presence, but not much. Nice, rich pine elements, less sweetness in the taste than the smell but it's still there.

Mouthfeel is velvety and more than slightly astringent, almost fully medicinal. Could use a touch more malt to smooth out the rough edges. I was surprised to see it listed as a DIPA, it seems to fall just short of that style. Thanks to trbeer for this sample.

My first Arcadia pours a hazy, burnished orange body with a small beige head that appears to have some orange streaking. Active carbonation apparent with a multitude of tiny bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. Quite a bit of patchy lace is left on the glass.
Aroma is dominated by all kinds of citrusy hops. Orange zest and grapefruit are prominent, with a note of pine in the background.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a powerful hops presence that is resinous and biting.
The taste follows the nose, with lots of citrusy hop goodness. Orange, grapefruit, and a hint of lemon and pine comprise most of the flavors here. Very little malt character here, just a note of caramel that really isn't sufficient to tame the hops domination.
Alcohol is well hidden, and this seems more of a single IPA than a Double. Not much balance for the hoppiness, but nicely drinkable.

This one really disappointed. I'm a big beer lover and I've been all about DIPA's recently but I guess this proves that not all DIPA's are great. In fact, it kind of sucked and was hard to finish. Really syruppy malts carried the liquid with lots of bitter resiny hops that didn't have much flavor besides bitterness. Maybe some citric qualities and there seemed to be a little diacetyl here as well. It was like citric maple syrup, yuck. Finish is bitter and had a metallic quality to it. This is like a dollar more for a single than any of there other beers and its probably their worst beer yet. Stay away.

This beer is a dark copper color with a medium beige head that disappeared rapidly. Thin and sticky lacing. The aroma is fruity, with some citrus hops and spice. Medium-bodied with a somewhat off-balance flavor profile. Piney hops, sour fruit and malt don’t seem to gel much. The finish is pine and grapefruit, with a sourness that is difficult to characterize. Not a bad beer by any means, and maybe I missed something but this beer just didn’t click for me on some levels.

One of these days, I'm going to stop buying these damn double IPAs altogether. Hops can be a great thing, but double IPAs are something of a fad -- and this one fits the bill perfectly. It's a limited batch, and that's a big plus. There are some who do it well, but they tend to experiment a bit, which is kind of what big beers are supposed to be about. When everyone follows the all-pine-tree-all-the-damn-time formula, people are bound to lose interest.

Consider my interest wandering around the fields of Kansas without a compass.

There's a little bit of fruit in the aroma, but this is really dominated by a pine tree forest and paint thinner sort of intensity. There are hops in this. I get it. Really.

The bottle says "hop fueled." It should say "hop fucked," because that's what this is. There are some mild fruit and lemon flavors here -- some grapefruit creeps in at mid-to-finish. But ultimately, you can't taste a lot in this other than the hops. It's hoppy malt water...minus the malt.
