Crunchy's had this on nitro-tap for a good deal. Went for it. Served in a mug.

A: It looked awesome, a murky, opaque muddy black color with a half inch off white head with reasonable amounts of lacing. Head retained itself the whole time.

S: Coffee, milk chocolate, oatmeal, barley, malts

T: sort of goes down hill here, has a strange taste to it, conflicting with the chocolate, coffee, barley, and malty flavors that are expected. I can't really describe it, it was just weird.

M: Full bodied, fairly carbonated, off balanced by strange after taste

O: overall it was alright, I thought it looked amazing but it didn't taste amazing, won't seek this out again but maybe it was just me.

guest nitro tap at rochester mills brewpub. notes from last new year's.

a - black in color with the typical finger of dense creamy head. foam completely coats the inside of the glass.

s - faint roast, faint cola. not much going on here.

t - roasted malt with dark chocolate notes. has a lingering, espresso like bitterness. finishes dry.

m - medium in body with lighter carbonation. very smooth as expected.

o - pretty good but nothing memorable. would oder it again it i saw it on tap.

Beer poured from Nitro-tap into Pint Glass @ Map Room

A - Body of the beer was solid black and poured with a one finger cream/coffee colored head; held very well; no visible carbonation was present in the body of the beer; sticky lacing formed in the glass

S - Scented notes of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, and oatmeal

T - Sweet vanilla and lingering oatmeal taste; sip follows up with a nice caramel vanilla wash; slightly bitter aftertaste, not so much hoppy but the bitterness seems to come from bitter chocolate and roasted malt notes

M - Smooth, rich and creamy, finishes with an airy and nitro packed feathery light texture

D - A little light on flavor and aroma; great drink with the right amount of alcohol

Smell is slightly sour but more from roast aroma and not fermentation. A little bit of chocolate malt.

Looks deep black with a THICK tan head. You can put a nipple on it and it sticks for a few minutes. Held up to the light, it has a big red hue and lets light through.

Nice roasty and base malt flavor. Hop bitterness is high but the dark malt is the dominant flavor. Some ale yeast fruit but mostly clean.

Thick and creamy with a pretty big body.

Nice dry oatmeal stout. A good thick brew that would make a great local alternative to Guinness and is a good example of the style.

Tried it on-tap at the brewery, poured near black with some nutty brown highlights. Tall thick, creamy tan head that shows that familiar downward carbonation. The head refuses to recede. Not much lace left behind however.

Hard to detect a lot through the dense creamy head. Some roasted malt and a slight metallic character. Not much to be impressed with.

Extra creamy and thick. Milky light cocoa and a hint of coffee. Mostly malt and not extremely flavorful. Judging from the reviews from the bottle, I'm curious about some of the differences on-tap. It seems to be a well received brew overall, but I was unimpressed with the flavor.

The mouthfeel was a saving grace however. Creamy and milky with some light carbonation. In my opinion many of this beer’s characteristics are similar to those of a dry Irish stout instead of an oatmeal. Solid, but not at all what I expected.

Quite close to black with a fine textured tan head. Sheets of foam layer the sides. I love the way the beer horizon (the separation between the beer and the head) looks. It stayed that way throughout the beer.

This smells like carmel with a hint of flowery hops.

The taste is like sweet chocalate. The finish is still sweet plus flowery.

Very smooth and creamy. The persistant head creates a "milk" mustache feel. Maybe a little thin.

Very enjoyable. I always enjoy Arcadia beers, especially at the brewpub.

@ Arcadia's Brewery/Brewpub

This beer was a very dark brown color and formed a perfect off white head that retained it's head and left some nice lace. The aroma was of malt and butterscotch. The flavor was of malt and a touch of butterscotch. The body was lighter than most for this style and had a lighter finish.

A: A pitch black in color with hints of brown, a nice finger of tan head at the top, and lacing was only present in the beginning.

S: Strong coffee notes with roasted malts, a slight hint of brown sugar or caramel, couldnt really put my finger on it.

T: Very roasty flavor to this one, the coffee is present as you drink it with slight hints of berries.

M: Was expecting a more creamy mouthfeel, but it was more on the medium body side of things, not to much carbonation.

O: Overall a good brew, nothing crazy but a nice stout.

Been cellared a while.

Pours an opaque black with garnet highlights and a foamy inch and a half tan head that dissipates slowly.

Sweet roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, licorice, and a hint of soy form the aroma.

Flavor is more subtle, with roasted malt emerging late in the sip. Underpinnings of dark cherries, sherry, and chocolate add complexity early, eventually succumbing to toasted nuts at the finish, which is just a touch dry and oatmeal-like.

Body is a little light, possibly exacerbated by slightly high carbonation.

Seems to have held up well. Slight oxidation, but it's easily overlooked for this review. The underlying fruitiness becomes metallic, and is a bit overwhelming.

A: pours a opaque black in an american shaker with a finger of khaki head that hangs around for the experience and leaves some lacing. What you would come to expect from a stout.

S: chocolate and dark malts dominate but there is a hint of oats and (not to sure how to identify this) grits or grist.

T: milk chocolate and more oats, no big surprise and nothing too amazing here. Some pine hops balance out what could potentially be a breakfast cereal.

MF: heavy body and a bit chewy, smooth and creamy.

O: nothing overly special with this oatmeal stout. There are better offers and I would probably consider those first but not a bad beer.

An oat malt stout, as opposed to the more common non-malted oatmeal variety. This was a silver medal winner in the 2003 World Beer Championship.

Very dark in color, it opens up very nicely as it warms. The nose is the standard coffee aroma, from the chocolate barley, with a cocoa head that dissipates a little too quickly. The flavors are complex, however, as you roll it around the tongue. It almost has a lactic feel to it, with a little silkiness from the oats, but I also detected hints of grape and plum, in addition to the expected coffee and chocolate notes. There is a definite hop presence, but it's not too firm. The lingering after-taste is mainly malt and sweetness.

It's a very nice stout and pretty standard for its style.

A - Supremely black, with a beautiful tan-caramel head. Looks like an alluring stout, that like a beautiful woman at at pub, begs attention.

S - Not much here. The appearance is sort of a tease here. Very subtle malt and a hint of dark chocolate are all that I could ascertain.

T - Definitely some bitter, dark chocolate, nice malty mid-palate, and a creamy sweet and subtle hoppy and dry finish. Not much complexity. Seems a bit lacking for an Oatmeal Stout. It does bear some of the charter of a good oatmeal, but they almost seem muted here.

M - Very light bodied for a stout. Almost seems watery, with a bit of carbonation. Drinks much like a Guiness, but with less body.

D - I would say this is a very drinkable stout, especially for novices.

Overall, this Oatmeal Stout is very restrained, which may cater to the masses. A stout that would please people who don't care for very bold flavors.

Poured at the brewery....

A- Pours a deep black color. One finger tan head that shows medium retention. Some sticky lacing left on the glass as I drank it down.

S- Kind of faint in the smell. Roasted malts in the front with some light anise. Nothing though that really sticks out. To get even this I had to stick my nose pretty much in my beer.

T- The flavor came through a little more than in the aroma. Roasted malts in the front with a little coffee flavor. This gets shut down quickly by a bitter hop bite. The hops seem to dominate everything from this point on.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation was a little lacking for the beer personally. Roasted malts left on the palate but a huge hop bitterness lingered in the aftertaste. Flavor seemed to be a little one sided from either malty to hoppy.

D- This beer was a interesting one to say the least. I don't know if I like it or not. I had a glass and a sampler of it and couldn't tell still. Maybe just maybe I'll try this one again.

I had this on tap at Ashleys, a bartender recommendation...It pours nice and black with a full creamy head that has really nice lacing, my hopes are high...The aroma is really dead, hard to pull anything out but a little roast coffee, my hopes start to fade...The taste is better than the aroma, it has a light flavor but not much here and its super thin to drink.

This is nothing more than an average oatmeal stout.

Sampled on 2-14-10

Pours completely black and opaque, with filmy tan that spicks in chunks to the sides of the glass.

Smell is all very bready malt, light notes of anise and molasses.

Taste is sweet malt at the beginning, followed by a surprising hop bitterness. A bit out-of-place, the bitterness becomes the most dominant character.

Mouthfeel is good, slick but still creamy, it fits the style.

Drinkability is decent, but the bitter kick becomes tiring.

Overall, average, and nothing better.

12 oz. Dark brown pour, dark white head. Extreamly carbonated, so much so I had to pour twice, extreamly slowly and still eventually just carved off the excessive head. Thought it was potentially infected, but the smell did not lead that way. Mild roast malt, chocolate, some oat, peat, pretty inoffensive. Dry taste of the same roast malt and light chocolates. Like a weak Guiness, made me think this was a dry Irish stout. Finish very clean, but also quite non-descript watery. Drinkability was very good after the mamoth foam was removed. This is the first from Arcadia I've had that seems a bit questionable. I definetely wonder about the age of this one....Worth another try maybe.

A Jet black, creamy, long lasting head that leaves great lacing. 4.0

S Not much smell. Deep, dark roast malt is all that I could smell. 3.0

T Kind of a weak, rather thin stout. Dark roast malt, only trace hops. I am not inspired by this stout. 3.0

M This is thin for a stout. 2.0

D Fair due to its uninspiring taste. 3.0

Moderate beige head, but it leaves thin ring lace. Near black color where no light shines through

The smell is far more mild than a typical stout. There are faint coffee grounds and dark, dark chocolate aromas

Strong espresso flavor. No creaminess at all. The aftertaste features unsweetened chocolate flavor. The body is neutral with a lower level of carbonation, giving it a fuller mouthfeel than the liquor suggests.

This is a black beer, but with a surprising clarity to the depth of the blackness. It had a tan creamy head. The aroma was very roasty. The taste was very roasty and malty. The mouthfeel was appropriately creamy. Definitely to style but perhaps more roasty than some. An enjoyable beer and quite drinkable.

From my tasting notes on my blog Pilgrims Pub. This beer pours a dark brown almost black with a two finger tan head that disappears quickly. Spotty lacing left on glass. Enormous roasted malt smell. The taste is of dark roasted coffee, with bitter sweet chocolate overtones. Creamy full bodied beer with a dry finish. Exceptional drinkability, one of my favorite stouts.

Hmmm In usually like some of the Arcadia brews.

Pours a dark brown/black..with decent dirty colored head

Smells somewhat sour with no real distinct goodness at all.maybe a little smokey

Taste is a a sort of burnt goodyear tire crossed with a hershey chocolate bar and no marshmellow..

A: poured from a bottle into a stemless wine glass. Dark liquid quickly subsumed by a huge head. Unexpected for a stout that had been sitting out for some time -- caught me off guard, had to pour off some foam to avoid carnage!

S: toasty oats. nice & all, but not very strong, and not much else going on.

T: caramel malt, sweet chocolate, toasty oats. very pleasant.

M: smooth creamy oaty goodness coats everything, with a carbonated kick to boot

D: nice beer that hits all the right notes for an oatmeal stout while going down easily. It's very cheap for a craft beer and readily available, so I'll certainly be revisiting it even though it's not a world-beater.

A: deep rich coffee color with bubbly head that dissipates very quickly.

S: I sensed that this coffee/toasted oat smell was somehow artificial. I don't know how true that is, but it tasted better than it smelled, which was thin or fake somehow.

T: Nice combination of oat and coffee flavors. It's really reminiscent of my coffee pot when I leave just a bit in the bottom and it burns--not unpleasant, really. I get the sense from many of Arcadia's brews that the flavors should be richer somehow.

M: Really pleasant in the mouth despite some bitterness to the taste: good carbonation, smooth drinking.

D: It's bitter but not too heavy, and has a nice taste, so I can see having a few of these, maybe buying it again (or not).

poured a jet black with a small tight bubbled head that faded to a thick film around thew edges that left some nice sticky lacing
smell is sweet coffee, hinting towards dark fruits also for some reason picking up a bit of a spiced rum thing too no hop presence noticed
taste is big astringent coffee can some what pick up some oatmeal like notes too again no hops picked up
mouthfeel is slightly short of thick but holds itself well carbonation is perfect
drinkability, I like this one very much goes down nice and won't knock you down after more than one so highly recommend this one

Pours black with a creamy, slightly rocky, melted ice cream colored head. Dies down quickly but the lacing is extrordinarily sticky.

Aroma is strong of sweet coffee. A little vanilla, metal, and sweet malt. Actually a very complex aroma.

Taste is a little bit of a let down.. but I'm finding that's sort of the case with dedicated craft beer drinkers. It's sort of a blunt beer.. but anyways. A bit soda-like in water quality. A little more lingering chocolate/roasted flavor than some other dry stouts. Peppery carbonation, dry but tart mouthfeel that lingers. Not bad, the tartness and chocolate flavor stand out. Would probably be really nice on cask.
