24 oz can was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that has reduced to a thin layer. It is a deep copper color with some clarity and bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: caramel and bready malts. Not much else going on except for the maltiness.

Taste: Same as above with mild hop bitterness. Very malty too.

Mouthfeel: Creamy smooth, chewy, medium bodied, and medium carbonation.

Overall: A nice brown ale. 24 oz can is funny stuff too. It was a nice Easter present after snowboarding at Wildcat. It seems their canned beers are better than their bottled ones.

Deep golden brown like brand spankin' new motor oil. Thick, fluffy head simmers to a pleasing skim and tosses up a few waves of lace. As always bonus points for cans, extra super bonus points for a tall boy.

Doesn't smell like much. Toast and light caramel with a swampy theme.

Despite a timid aroma BB is a very bold brown ale. Toasty, nutty, leafy tobacco and a bitter tree bark tea-like finish that lingers on and on. A little watery but pretty good for a watery style.

One of the better browns I've had recently.

Appearance: Nice opaque brown body with one-finger head even after 15 minutes, Solid lacing that washes off quickly but seems consistent

Scent: Burnt sugar, toasted bread, molasses, floral and pine-y/spicy hop notes, cookies and light cream are all apparent. Better/more complex as it warms

Taste: Toasted malts and deep caramel melded with some hops that balance out a fairly sweet-leaning palate

Mouthfeel: Smooth with on-style carbonation leaning towards a heavy body. The spicy, pine-y hops even this out, however

Drinkability: This would be a great brown ale to share with someone who is into the style but hasn’t had this particular one yet. Pretty great!

Overall: Though the huge can is definitely silly, this is a very solid, drinkable and enjoyable brown ale from New England that has definite Old World English brown characteristics and is very even in temperament. Need to get more brews by Moat!

This brew pours a clear brown with bold amber highlights and a thin white head. The aroma is of roasted malt, coffee, and mild brown sugar. The flavor is a bit hoppy for an English brown ale but is followed by a molasses and sweet male finish. The mouthfeel is medium. Moat Mountain Bone Shaker Brown is a decent brew, recommended.

Poured into an imperial pint glass. Color was a nice dark brown with a 1 finger creamy white head. Fair amount of carbonation rose from the bottom. Head only lasted a few minutes. Aroma was a roasted grain, similar to a brown bread, with a reasonable fit of sweetness to it. Taste was a bit spicy up front, hints of pepper. Mellowed out to a roast malt/oat flavor. Not bad in the mouth. The tongue was a little on the excessively tingly side, but coated fairly well. Overall a solid brown. Takes a ding on the cost, seemed a bit high for a brown.

Into a nonic:

A: cloudy dark brown body with a good one finger foamy lumpy tan head. Foamy lacing is left, too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising.

S: toasted oats and walnut up front with an ever so faint sense of hops in the background.

T: sweet through the previously stated flavors and combines with some nice caramel tones.

M: medium, slightly dry and a bit watery, sessionable

O: I was a bit skeptical in the beginning when I saw the price, but am glad I bought it to try a style I'm used to and like from a company I've never had any of their stuff. I'd probably have this again, but definitely as a novelty because of the price.

Picked up one of Moat Mountain's awesome 24oz tallboys at the corner store and was very very pleasantly surprised.

A - Fairly opaque, cloudy darker shade of brown with a half finger of cream-colored head.

S - Lightly toasted oats and barley, walnut, caramel, hazelnut.

T - Follows the nose, with toasted grains, nuts, and caramel sweetness. Very pleasant and easy to drink.

M - Slightly dry. Medium body. Good.

O - Overall this is my new gold standard for brown ales. This beer is so easy to drink, fairly simple and unassuming. Very accessible and exciting at the same time. What a great surprise.

Pours a clear red orange brown color with a decent sized bubbly tan head that slowly dissipates to a ring on top. Smells like a brown ale. Lots of caramel and toffee with hints of butterscotch, chocolate, and earth. The flavor is sweet with malts, lots of brown sugar and caramel with a slight bit of spice and earth. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation ans a sweet lightly syrupy mouthfeel. This is a nice brown ale. Solid tasty simple brew.

Pours dark chestnut with a white head, no retention or lace.

Nice toasted caramel and nutty burnt sugar aromas.

Nice balance of sweet and bitter. Caramel, some nice tasty malt, toffee, and an herbal bitterness with some nuts and husk to round it out.

Nice carbonation to keep the sweet from being cloying.

Nice brew. A great version of the style.

Sampled on May 25, 2012. It pours brown with ruby red highlights from the can with a smallish, short-lasting head. This aroma is something else with rich malts, nuttiness, yeast, and maybe even a little bit of hazelnut or cinnamon. The body falls into the medium range, which seems to be the weakest part of the beer. The taste is fabulous with extraordinary malts, yeast, and a much more laid back hop character. Overall it is well balanced with a mild bitterness. As far as Brown Ales go this is actually one of the better ones.

Found this at Walters Restaurant in Portland, Maine, this is a dark root beer brown with a decent off-white head and similar lacing. The aroma suggests an earthy malt and swampy caramel nuttiness. Very nice as brown ales go. The first mouthful introduces a medium-light bodied brew with flavors of charcoal malt and some evergreen hop that provides a little bit of a dry feel through the tingly carbonation. Some creamy milk chocolate comes out nicely. Served cold this is super refreshing and tasty. What a great surprise!

Twenty four ounce can poured into a pint glass. This one pours a dark chestnut color with two fingers of creamy khaki head.

Hints of caramel and hazelnuts in the aroma with a nice bready malt backbone. Seems to have a little bit of a floral hop presence that lingers in the background. The pallet has a nice hazelnut flavor with some hints of cocoa powder and caramel. Dark German bread with a little bit of a bitter hop kick at the finish.

The body is full and slightly sticky with soft carbonation. Overall I'm real impressed with this one. I had low expectations (for an unknown reason, I've liked all of the Moat beers so far.) but this one is a real solid offering at a good price. I'll be happy to grab this one again.

Poured from a tallboy into a tumbler pint, the beer is a clear, vibrant, chestnut coloring with a tall, frothy, dense, off-white head of about a half an inch. Aromas of chocolate, butterscotch, and maple blend together for a very sweet, inviting nose. Flavors are rich, but remain light, with a roasted hazelnut and chocolate blending that is pleasantly sweet but not overpowering. The chocolate gives a slight bitterness to keep all the sweet characteristics in check. Very decent on the palate. The aftertaste is a roasted coffee and caramel blending, almost like after drinking a caramel machiato (sp?). Smooth, clean finish with only a hint of the roasted qualities left behind. Tasty, and easy to drink.

Had on-tap at Street in Portsmouth. I've had this beer on-tap at the brewery several times before, and it's a stand-out in a style that is too populated by mediocre beers.

A: Arrives, beheaded, in a tumbler glass; brown as all get-up and probably right-on for the style, but doing little to attract attention, aside from the pleasant lacing that will linger throughout the glass, and with the clarity common to Moat beers.

S: Roasty, toasty, nutty and bready--the nose is all malt, but very clean, with caramel dominating and just the slightest hint of hops.

T: Crisp and clean, as all Moat beers seem to be, this is fairly hoppy for the style, but still a malt-focused beer. The malts are bready, semi-sweet, but largely dry and perfectly balanced by the earthy hop bitterness. This exhibits none of the cloying, sticky sweetness that seem to predominate so many browns.

M: Mouthfeel is good--fairly full and smooth, but just slightly on the light side perhaps. Still, very clean.

O: Easily the best brown ale I can think of. While I enjoy many of the other browns from this neck of the woods--Smuttynose OBD, Throwback Dippity Do and Woodstock Pigs Ear--the Moat brown leads the pack. This is a style I rarely go for, but there's no hesitation when I see this on-tap. Word was they were planning to put this in 24 oz. cans along with the pale ale a few years back. I hope those plans come to fruition.

A lightly reddish tinted brown color with nice cap of light khaki colored head, good retention. Scent is of roasted and toasted nuts, crusty dark bread, powered cocoa and decent earthy hop notes. Taste surprises with strong nutty notes mixed with powdered cocoa, dark grainy and crusty bread and earthy hop notes. Medium bodied, nice and hefty on palate for the style with some earthiness to it. A fantastic brown ale that does it all right.

Enjoyed a pint earlier today at the Brewpub for $4.00.

Beer was served brown with a solid tan head that was long lasting.

Nose had hints of malt and cocoa.

Taste was somewhat nutty with a hint of cocoa. Decent hopping balanced the malt sweetness quite well.

Mouthfeel was perfect. I cannot say i have ever had a brown with this full of mouthfeel and smoothness.

Overall a solid beer, glad i picked this one to try!

Toasted pie-crust brown color with a crystal-clear clarity, the lacing shows great retention. Nutty aroma with a hint of sweet caramel, toasted bread and a faint raisin fruitiness. Very smooth with more than enough crispness to keep things lively within the medium body. Pleasantly heavy on the toasted side, as it comes across with a very tasty, nutty character. Mild caramel and bready sweetness in the middle. Hops are modest and let the malt pull this beer along, though the bitterness is firm enough to keep things balanced. The toasted and nutty flavors don't leave quickly, and they linger very far into the semidry aftertaste.

This is one of those epic Brown Ales that we could see drinking all night long without hesitation. A growler to go will suffice for now--staying over in their inn sounds like a good idea.

Yummy! Had on tap at the Blue Mermaid in Portsmouth NH. Nice darkish red brown, with a nice white head. Aroma of sweet malts, nuts and caramel. Taste is super! Sweet nutty malt flavors,are followed by just a hint of hops. Malts really come thru with brown sugar/nutty blend. This is a great beer!

This was a very nice beer. On tap, served in a mug, the beer was a reddish/brown color with a thick off-white head. A little bit of lacing. A caramel aroma primarily, also a little nut aroma. Taste followed aroma, caramel and nuts. Nice hops kick at the end. It felt good and tasted good.

my favorite brew pub on the planet--moat mountain in north conway, nh on the east side of the white mountains. far and away my favorite place.

anyway, brown ale isn't my beer of choice but i make an exception for moats.

far and away the best example of the style i've ever had. big 22 oz glasses!

Poured a hazy ruby and brown hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing

The smell featured solid coffee and toasted malt aroma.

The taste was a clean and dry coffee and cocoa flavor. Good bitterness. Pumpernickle bread sort of doughiness.

The mouthfeel was clean with good carbonation.

Overall a very drinkable ale. Nice and dry. ABV - 5.5%.

Pours a coppery brown, topped with a one finger off-white head. Only leaves sparse bits of lacing on the glass.
Caramel, nutty and earthy aroma, nice amount of hops for a brown ale.
Pretty consistent from aroma to taste, caramel, nuts, earthy. After the malty flavors some floral hops come out.
Medium bodied, to the lighter side, a pretty basic brown at first I only had a sampler, but the hop note convinced me to order a full pint on our second visit.

This bier has a deep copper color, perhaps more closely approximating mahogany. Head was thin and a touch off-white. A bit of lacing, but not much. Nose had a nutty, semi-sweet malt aspect, with a hint of hops as well....though it was mild, in general. Body could have had a bit more to it....lies better than thin yet not quite medium. Still, it felt fairly smooth on the tongue. Nutty notes show in the flavor as well, along with some toffee characteristics. Balance is nice, with hops making a good statement at the end, with a pleasing, floral finish with out being bitter. Prosit!!

I saw the tap handle and thought, "not another brown ale." It came down in front of me, brown with a decent head. I took a sip, "wham". Hey, who put the hops in here? Initial shock turned to fascination. This was a crossbred beer, a yankee innovation. It had the sweet maltiness as it entered your gullet, then "wham", hops. A must try. A brown ale for hop heads? What next, stouts? Hmmmmmmmmmm....

Nice American brown. Auburn-brown colour with sticky, tight head with lace and cap that are long lasting. Sweet maltiness and very slight hop flower. Solid, thick malt with some sweetness and hop bite. Very smooth, thick medium body.

A nice hoppy brown with a very smooth body and a nice look. Cheers!
