Though the recipe changes year to year, this West-Coast style double IPA always embodies the adventurous spirit of the original India Pale Ales – and each year’s release promises to take you on an epic journey. This year's batch bursts with notes of citrus, melon and pine from Chinook, El Dorado, Citra, Azacca, Simcoe, Cascade and whole flower Columbus hops. Cape of Good Hope is a limited-release beer, available for one month only in 12-oz bottles and draught. the current year the description continues

Even if you want to like this, it makes it difficult at the start. The pour of a pint can into a clear glass liter mug results in another puffy stark white head that oversteps its function. So much so that this has to have significant wheat inclusion. The mildly hoppy aroma is basically one dimensional and its color is a bright and nearly translucent solid amber. The hopping is good and the body is thin when consumed. There are those that prefer this to the true barely malted IPAs and they should love this. The hop profile is incredibly bold, yet far from being bitter. Despite having only a slight maltiness, this drinks so nicely that its less than supple body isn't missed. That could be problematic as this 9.1% ABV taste treat goes down so easily. Like most wheat or wheatlike brews, there's very little glass lacing. Even a traditional purist that wants barley malt in their IPA will have to accept that this is praiseworthy. People looking to down a pint for a quick buzz can't do it more tastefuly than this.

A: Pours a cloudy copper with amber highlights. Yields an explosive fluffy, white head that dissipates slowly. Good frothy, webbed lacing and moderate carbonation.
N: Orange citrus, lemon, caramel and hints of pine.
T: Orange juice, lemon zest and candied caramel upfront. Caramel notes flow through while picking up hints of papaya and coconut. Finishes with lingering pine, citrus and caramel.
M: Medium bodied, smooth, tingly with carbonation and dry.
O: Nicely balanced between the caramel malts and American hops. Good citrus and pine notes with hints of tropical fruit. Alcohol is well hidden. Not as complex as I was hoping but surprisingly smooth and easy drinking.
