Notes:
Early American colonialists, seeking natural ingredients for brewing ales, turned to pumpkins, which were plentiful, flavorful and nutritious. Blended with barley malt, pumpkins became a commonly used beer ingredient. Post Road Pumpkin Ale brings back this tasty tradition. Hundreds of pounds of pumpkins are blended into the mash of each batch, creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, biscuity malt center, and crisp finish.

Brooklyn Post Road Pumpkin Ale has a thick, creamy, cream-colored head and an opaque golden-orange appearance, with some lacing rings left behind. The aroma is of nutmeg, ale, and green beans, and the taste is of blonde ale, with underlying hop bitterness. There are subtle nutmeg and pumpkin notes in this. Mouthfeel is medium, and Brooklyn Post Road Pumpkin Ale finishes refreshing, easy going, and drinkable. It’s very good.

Pumpkin Ale, got to have some with the season

Appearance - Looks like your standard light beer to me, light yellow with a basic white head

Smell - Cloves, Allspice, Nutmeg pick up light scents. Along with some hops it make a pretty unique smell but it seemed just a bit weak than I would like

Taste - Nice! Pumpkin with nutmeg and a good medium bitter with hints of sweet pumpkin pie at the end. This is what I would expect and I like how the sweetness is tame

Mouthfeel - Great carbonation that keeps the flavor around weell

Overall - This pumpkin ale could be a very good daily drinker. Only I could see getting tired of the Nutmeg after awhile

Oorange to amber in colour with a bubbly white head that is about two centimetres tall and settles to a thin lacing after a few moments.

Medium sweetness and lots of spice to begin along with some caramel and biscuit aromas and a slightly bitter, ginger infused smell following on from this. There is some light cinnamon and a touch of pumpkin too.

Spicy with a mix of equal parts ginger and cinnamon along with various other spices and maybe a little pepper. There is some pumpkin, caramel malts and a biscuit like taste to round things off with.

Medium in body and with a medium carbonation. There is a spicy tang and a slightly grainy feel, although the finish is quite crisp.

A good mix of ginger and spice as well as good balance overall, making a solid beer that was something different from what I would usually buy. I'm not sure I would have this one again but it is certainly a style of beer I hope to try again.

Not sure what the freshness dating is.

A= Pours a light amber color with a half finger of average looking head that holds great retention and lacing on the side of the glass.

S= Smells mostly like a typical malty amber ale. There is a very slight amount of spice and pumpkin in the aroma but you have to search.

T= The taste is again sort of an average pale ale/amber ale sort of taste with just a few whisps of pumpkin and the occasional nutmeg cinnamon spice. The finish is where most of the pumpkin comes in with a little spice breezing across the tongue.

M= The carbonation is a little high.

O= This is somewhat underwhelming. An easy drinker with low alcohol but I wish there was a little more flavor.

don't see the appeal in this one. i really enjoy certain pumpkin beers, but i wouldnt have even known this was a pumpkin beer if it was on the label. i think part of the appeal of the pumpkin beer idea is that pumpkin pie taste with the spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. i didnt taste any of that in this one and found it to be rather bland and boring. it didn't have much of a taste and i really wonder why people like it so much. not for me.

Appearance: effervescent on the pour, but head is gone in a flourish; deep copper colour, clear

Aroma: mild aroma; some caramel sweetness, a bit of spice

Taste & Mouthfeel: very flat, with no impact, thin and watery; do get hints of pumpkin spice, but mostly just bland bready flavour

Overall: not even worth going past a few sips, very disappointing from a good brewery

Appearance: Amber hue with good clarity and visible carbonation. Thin white head.

Aroma: Biscuit and caramel malt with some spice in there. Clove, ginger, cinnamon.

Taste: Nice subtle spice profile with the malts mentioned above. The actual pumpkin flavor is in there but hides behind the malt a bit. Pretty good spice to malt ratio, definitely far from overbearing.

Mouthfeel: Just under medium bodied. The clove gets a tad cloying after a while but it's still pretty drinkable.

Final Thoughts: A pretty average pumpkin beer. Nice and light at 5.0% ABV. Would I drink it again? Probably not until next October.

This Pumpkin Ale is very satisfying, and definitely has the taste of pumpkin and spices others lack. A must-try! It tastes more on the sweet side more than anything else, the color was nice but not as amber-orange as I would hope for. I would recommend this with maple pork chops.

For a bottled ale, this had taste, and I am more of a draft beer drinker but the taste was unique and there. I couldn't pick up on the spices the label mentions, but it tasted appropriate for the type of ail.

12oz. bottle poured into a tumbler glass.

A- a straightforward translucent amber brew with an eggshell white head that sticks around pretty well and leaves a little lacing.

S- some light malt, pumpkin, nutmeg and cinnamon.

T- Wow, tastes like a straightforward ale at first with a pleasant grainy note, but the pumpkin, nutmeg and cinnamon come in on the backend, and while subdued, provide a very nice addition to the brew. Nothing is over the top, or in your face as some pumpkin ales can be.

M- medium to heavy carbonation, and almost a bit too dry on the backend.

O- Didn't have high hopes for this one, but was nicely surprised. Not the best by any mean, but a very drikable/enjoyable pumpkin ale.

Serving : bottle.

A: A nice amber color with a large foamy head.

S: Nice smell, was expecting more pumpkin/spice in the aroma, though.

T: Taste is nice and pretty well balanced. Not overpowering, but I'd prefer a little more pumpking/spice in the taste.

M: I think it was a bit to light, watery maybe even. Could use more body.

O: All in all this is a pretty good pumpkin beer. I like the slight hop/bitter play in the taste however think it leaves a little to be desired. I do think theres a bunch of better pumpkin seasonal's out there, though.

This beer pours a bright orange color with a nice amount of off-white head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass.

Aroma wise theres a nice pumpkin smell that pulls through the rest of the medium bodied ale, nothing special here.

Flavor wise I pick out what reminds me of roasted pumpkin seeds, not a sweet pumpkin pie or anything like that, more of a grainy flavor. Finishes on the dry side, Overall nice pumpkin brew.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours orange with a thick eggshell colored head. There are some visible tiny bubbles rising in the beer. The head retreats slowly, leaving some sticky lacing on the side of the glass. I detect some bready malt aromas in the nose with some pumpkin. I also pick up some of those pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and clove). The taste revealed something missing in the aroma: hops. Those citrusy and herbal hop notes hit the mouth on the first sip to lead the palate into this pumpkin ale. I got those bready malts with those pumpkin pie spices. I get some of the pumpkin too. There's some mild sweetness in the flavor that is balanced well by the spices and some of the hop bitterness. The body is light to medium with moderate carbonation. The finish is somewhat clean with a slightly dry finish. The drinkability is high. This is a very good beer and a bit different from your typical pumpkin ale.

I didn’t notice this was from Brooklyn when I bought it; score for me, I love this brewery. Cheers!

A: Big, foamy head; three fingers of light tan foam in full Brooklyn style. Lies down in a few moments, encasing the inside of the glass in lacing. Smooth, creamy retention that lets some of the pale amber body shine through out of the top of the glass.

S: Very mild nose: grass, vegetable-pumpkin, spiced grains, and bready malt. It’s an earthy foundation of husky grains, quite average in character, really – I wouldn’t be able to pick it out from a typical, grainy amber. But the spice is evident, well balanced within the grains: nutmeg mostly, powering over cinnamon and brown sugar. Almost pumpkin pie-like, but mostly a darkly-spiced, grain-forward nose.

T: Now that’s the Brooklyn I was looking for – are those hops in my pumpkin ale? Yep, a lemony, herbal brightness gives this a kick at the front, sending the palate down a path of bitter spiciness; it’s quickly followed by pine, cinnamon, hickory, and nutmeg, but still mixed in with a rindy, lemon-lime hop taste. Balanced, sweet barley, biscuity malt, and pumpkin pie filling at medium intensity mixed in, too. Finishes with that bitter, lemongrass taste from the hops and a touch of pumpkin.

M: Overall, it’s light enough to make you think pilsner or pale ale by feel alone, so it’s drinkable – but more in a refreshing, pale manner (as per the palate). It’s thick enough to keep it better than the low-alcohol beer, though.

O: Beer that wets the palate in a way not normal for this style, and I like it. One of the only pumpkin beers I’ve tried this year that I’d buy in a six-pack. Not a lot of pumpkin, but tons of Brooklyn – that’s probably what I like about it.

I had this beer poured on tap at Mamossers in Hamburg NY, poured into a pint glass.

A: Golden Straw/Amber Hue, Passes Some Light, White Head, Decent Lacing

S: Pumpkin, Mild Cinnamon, Mild Grainy Malts

T: Grainy Bitter Malts, Mild Pumpkin

M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Semi Bitter

Overall, the nose was nice but the taste was way too bitter, not even a good hoppy bitterness, just a grainy bitter without much pumpkin flavor. Not the worst pumpkin beer I have ever had but definitely up there.

Big fan of pumpkin beers so I look forward to trying something new.

It looks delicious. Orange-amber bubbly with a half finger of khaki head and a bit of lacing.

Smells soapy, floral, lemony, squash. Faint underlying allspice, and yes..pumpkin meat.. becomes more prominent when the blast of florals fade, and there is caramel malt.

Taste..crackers, bread with a soapy/floral pumpkin element which I believe may be the particular flavor of squash or pumpkin flesh used in the mash. Lemons. There is detectable pumpkin, but I'm not digging how its presented. There isn't enough supporting spice, and quite cleary not enough sweetness..but maybe this is purely fermented pumpkin?

Mouthfeel is way too light and watery. It's akin to fermented pumpkin water. It doesn't hold together at all.

Overall. Not too good. There are far better pumpkin ales. Add in a bit of sweetness?

12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint.
5% ABV, no date.

A - Tons of tiny carbonation bubbles rush from the etched hop in the glass' base, easily visible through the crystal clear darkened orange beer. A rocky off-white head rests on top seemingly never to lower. Thick lace eventually coats the glass in chunky rings.

S - A fantastic blend of spices releases into the air with a strong aromatic presence! The classics are all present; nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice rise out with a well-balanced level that's strong but not too overpowering allowing roasted pumpkin to pull through more. But pumpkin ale is still a beer, not just a pie, so it's backed by a smooth and appetizing pie-crust-like caramel bready malt nose but a grounding grainy pale malt scent that gives it a hint of cheap lager. One of the best pumpkin aromas the season!

T - Spice hits up front but it's much more mellow than the open, inviting aroma suggests. Harsh, grainy malt and bland mashed pumpkin follow through but the finish cleans the pumpkin ale flavor out with floral and bitter hops. For as complex and inviting as the aroma is, I find Post Road's taste to be almost unattractive and a large let-down as it's much more of a mildly spiced bland lager (despite the ale designation).

M - Post Road's high carbonation also seems to scrub the nice pumpkin flavor from the tongue, ushering in sharp dryness, a hard water feel, and hoppy bitterness finishes the beer out. Spice is felt through the lingering qualities later on post-swallow of this light-bodied ale.

O - Brooklyn Brewery's Post Road Pumpkin Ale seems aimed at being a rendition of the colonial American pumpkin ales and succeeds in bringing the beer flavor through the pumpkin and spice ingredients, but perhaps a little too much. This beer tastes and feels much more like a lager than an ale and while it offers a big nose, the flavor seems lacking even if it is off the pumpkin ale beaten path. It's modest pumpkin and spice taste make it a good candidate for food pairing though, especially around the holidays, as well as being a good introductory pumpkin beer for the novice.

Had on tap on Wild Monk. Served in a pint glass.

A: Pours a nice amber color with a solid white head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin cap that leaves nice sticky lace down the glass.

S: Nice combinations of nutmeg and all spice with some background cinnamon. Warm biscuit and some fleshy pumpkin. Great nose.

T: Sadly the taste is disappointing compared to the nose. Definitely lager yeast flavors and much bigger biscuit malt flavors. The pumpkin takes a back seat and the spices aren't too pronounced.

M: Medium to light bodied with a nice medium carbonation and creamy mouthfeel.

O: The nose was great, but I felt like the taste was venturing into Marzen territory. Easily drinkable, but definitely lacking the definitive pumpkin pie flavors in the taste. I had a Schlafly pumpkin ale after this and it just confirmed my experiences.

12 oz. bottle. Best by Jan 2013.

Warm golden orange body. Clear. Small, gauzy, light beige-white head. Some lacing. Super pumpkin pie aroma! Big notes of gourdy pie filling, sugary crust, molasses, and spices (clove, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon).

Taste is a bit of a letdown after the wonderful nose. Almost a stretch to say that it is reminiscent of the aroma. Toasted grains and vegetal, woody bitterness up front. Vaguely sweet pie filling maltiness fills in, before faint coffee bitterness and the assemblage of pumpkin pie spices take us into the finish. Moderate body with a slightly thin feel. Overall, a decent pumpkin ale, but a little disappointing on the taste.

12 oz bottle poured into a beer mug.

A: Pours a clear tawny copper color that's pretty filtered-looking for the style. I really enjoy the clarity of this one over others in the style. The head is a three finger light cream color with a frothy texture and decent - if unspectacular - retention.

S: Not the most interesting smelling beer. Hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin over an underlying caramel malt base. More marzen-y than pumpkin-y in general.

T: This isn't particularly pumpkin forward, but it does offer a semblance of balance (read: it's not overly sweet) other pumpkin ales don't. Very light spicing near the midtaste help to round out the flavors, but the finish could use a touch cleaning up. Dare I say it needs more sweetness in general?

M: The finish is a bit too astringent in general - more smoothness would be highly welcome here. I also think it could benefit from not finishing so cleanly, so as to leave behind more of a sweeter pumpkin aftertaste. On the plus side, this is very easy to drink, even without the presence of strong carbonation.

O: Falls a bit short as a pumpkin ale, but does quite well as a marzen substitute. Not an interesting beer, but one that can be drunk by the pitcher with food if so inclined.

Served on tap in a pint glass

This beer is clear orange red with a slight off white head. The beer is pumpkin flavor forward more then most pumpkin beers where the pumpkin only adds feel. It is smooth and creamy but isn't heavy at all. The beer's pumpkin flavor is lightly complimented by cinnamon, ginger and brown sugar. It's liquid pumpkin pie. The beer has a good feel and is quite session-able.
Overall, this isnt a stand out pumpkin beer but its a solid offering that does well on all categories.

two inch white foamy head rich copper color

taste I think its quite nice. Tastes like a Lager and not overly assertive squash flavor. The flavor is clearly there, but not overpowering. The spice notes are of a little clove and nutmeg
mouthfeel is a little slimey but the carbonation is nice and its quite refreshing

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Dogfish Head Snifter.

A: Clear golden orange color. Aggressive pour leads to a foamy 1.5 finger head that slowly dissipates. Lacing is pretty thick and is around most of the glass.

S: Pumpkin spices are up front with the sweetness of the malts shining through as well.

T: Pumpkin is the foremost flavor but the rest of the flavors seem to be lacking or a bit weak. It has an aftertaste that's not all that pleasant.

M: Plenty of carbonation but the feel is pretty watery. This is what most pumpkin beers feel like - I prefer mine much creamier.

O: Pretty average to slightly above average pumpkin beer. Doesn't amaze but it's a pretty easy drinker.

A: Copper-orange. Clear. White head with hints of beige. Medium to poor head retention.

S: Squash, clove, and cinnamon up front. No hop profile. A little bit of malt peeking through at the end.

T: Pumkin pie right off the bat, but it's subtle and fades quickly. Left with a disappointing malt profile. Some more toasted malts might help give it some nuttiness. Some bittering hops present, but very subtle. Can't detect any aroma hops. Overall a little bland - would like a richer, heavier punkin flavor that lingers on the palate longer with a big malt profile to balance it out. Hops are about right for this style.

Slightly unpleasent twang left on the palate.

M: A little light for such a distinctly autumn beer. Some dextrine malts might help with head retention and give this a little more body.

Was hoping this would be a little more bold but was a bit disappointed. It's not for me, but if you prefer a more subtle pumkin flavour you might really enjoy this.
