12oz bottle from Camperdown Cellars into a Lost Abbey Teku.
Hazelnut amber with a touch of orange about it. Beige foam on top that laces well.
One of the strongest smelling Marzen's i've come across. Really defined toasted malt as well as toffee and bread.
Tastes of toffee and toasted malt with a light bready influence. Does get a touch watery at the back end which is surprising given how big everything else is.
Mouthfeel is rich to start for the style. Medium body to start with but it drops off at the back as it gets a little watery. Still quite drinkable, almost as a result of that.
A well done Marzen. Shame about the watery parts to it. Otherwise this would be superb.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a 14 oz "pint" glass. Pours a nice copper red with a small white head that doesn't leave any lacing. Smells of dark grain, but very very weak. Tastes of dark malt and slight coffee, very surprising and nice. Beer is light bodied and goes down real smooth, it is a nice refreshing sessionable beer. Overall, a slightly above average beer.

Beer poured out from the bottle and into a pint glass. It appeared reddish amber in colour and had a malty nose to it that was typical of a 'fest' beer smell. Tasted malt, hops, and seemed mellow and balanced, with only a slight bitter after taste.
Would I buy this bee again? Maybe.

Poured this Oktoberfest from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Poured a golden orangish color, produced an average white head, nice retention, and it left an average amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma of the ale consisted of toasted malt and a slight grassy hop note. Medium in body, the brew was not very complex, had some malted grain base, caramel and some grassy hops. Overall, nicely balanced- not what I would consider an authentic Oktoberfest but it is a nice example, decent session beer.

The Oktoberfest/Marzen is my favorite beer type and out of all the Oktoberfests I've tried (damn near all of them) this is my favorite. It just puts Paulaner, Sam Adams, Spaten, Bitburger, Erdinger, Warsteiner, Franziskaner, Magic Hat, Leinenhugels and Becks to shame. Shiner, Harpoon, and Weihenstephaner are good alternatives when Brooklyn can't be found.
A- Deep golden amber, almost reddish/orange. The foam is off-white creamy like gruyere or real butter.
S- Toasted oats, light caramel, soft candied fruit
T- It just tastes like the beer I've been searching for. It is not too dark in flavor like more toasted octoberfests, and it is not wimpy-weak straw tasting like a pale ale or lager.
M- There is no overwhelming bitterness, not too sweet or yeasty
O- Very drinkable, luckily the gas station near my house seems to stock up on them and I can still find them in the spring or summer!

A – It actually has a wholly nice appearance to it, if somewhat tame. The body is totally transparent, chestnut brown, finger of head with good retention. Not bad at all.
S – Very nutty right of the bat, and it’s totally pleasant, albeit mild, but very nice, roasted barley bringing forth a light caramel aroma and a slight breadiness. Nice.
T – Comes together really rather nicely on the palate. I’m not a man who really enjoys too many Oktoberfests but this one just stays within my range of enjoyability. Not too mild, obviously not overwhelming, more caramel and nut and some more bread too, slightly dry—a tea aspect here too—and just an intimation of bitterness. Well crafted. And here I was about to write off Brooklyn, this is the first thing I’ve had by them that I’ve really enjoyed.
M – The Mouthfeel is good, it is medium for sure and it holds up very solidly throughout. Here we go Brooklyn.
O – I would definitely buy this again, my favorite Brooklyn beer so far. Not outstanding but just totally good, refreshing, and dare I even say somewhat delightful.

Brooklyn Oktoberfest pours out an orange-red color with a small head. The aroma is full of roasted and nutty malts, with some earthy hops in the back. The taste is very good, the malt flavors here are very well-developed, with just a touch of nuttiness rounding out the excellent roasted and caramel malt flavors. A solid dose of herbal and earthy hops make the finish nicely bitter. The mouthfeel is on the heavier side of light bodied, and decently carbonated. Overall, this is an extremely well composed Oktoberfest. Highly recommended.

Red copper colored. Clear, with a quickly diminishing white head.
Sweet caramelly aroma. Roasted malt and slight hops.
Sweet, grainy, caramelly, toasty flavor. Slight hop bitterness to balance.
Crisp mouthfeel with a prickly carbonation. Light-medium bodied, with a long, dry finish.
A good, solid Oktoberfest. Along the same lines as a Samuel Adams Oktoberfest.

smell is toasty, sweet malt and grain. Taste is much like the smell, pumpkin spice and caramel teaming up with a big grain and malt background. feel is like buttery silk, only problem is it's lack of a nice frothy head.
this is a great beer for the season; toasty, buttery, sweet, without being cloying. not stellar, but extremely solid. I could drink 1000 of these.

I'm generally a fan of this brewery and this bottle is well within the best by date so I am optimistic.
Rich malt aroma with a solid toastiness up front and a full on kick of melanoidans for the rest. Very faint hopping in the background (grassy noble type).
Orange/brown/amber. Very clear and looking like an American oktoberfest. Big and full biege head.
Flavor is not as robust as the aroma, which ultimately makes it more drinkable. Smooth feel and almost creamy feel. Less rich in the flavor. Still a malt forward beer with more toastiness in the balance.
Filling with ample carbonation. Long finish with a chewy lingering from the malt and just enough hops in the bittering and hop flavor hanging around for an enjoyable experience.
I won't expect less from this brewery. Always with the classic character to their beers and this one is no different. Don't think I found a Brooklyn beer I didn't appreciate.

A - clear deep amber, short head dissipated to a thin cover
S - nutty and sweetness followed by the classic blood-like rich mineral aroma, mildly fruity
T - syrupy sweet and even a little artificial, quickly followed by nutty and rich mineral flavours, touch of metallic and leafs
M - sticky sweet, rich, lightly dry with a full finish
O - it tends a little heavy on the sweet side but is still a worthy offering

appearance: dark amber, some reddish hues in light, inch of head on a rough pour, stays for a few minutes, nice lacing which fades over time
smell: bready, malty, slightly metallic clean, fresh sweetness
taste: crisp, smooth for the color, very biscuity, bready, slight roast notes, little achohol taste, little bitterness
mouthfeel: slight bite at the beginning, moderately filling, finishes with a nutty, alcoholic linger
overall: nice octoberfest style, hop character is almost non-existant, could make it a bit more complex, very basic malty octoberfest

Bottle from Good Beer Co., Glasgow (355ml, £2.40):
A light and clear looking, caramel brown to amber colour with a foamy, fingers width tall head that stays very well and looks quite still.
A nutty aroma with some good, earthy malts and a little bit of spice. There is some sweetness and a little bit of fruit in there too but the malts certainly dominate.
Malts dominating again along with a little bit of fruity sweetness, a good amount of caramel and some brown sugar. It was rounded off with some raisin and a little bitterness.
Mainly smooth with only a slight amount of grain and spice. The body is medium and the flavours are well balanced with a nice, bitter end to round things off with.
Probably the best Märzen I have tried, although it isn't my most frequently visited style. There was a great malt and caramel base with just the right amount of sweetness and bitterness at the end. A well balanced and very enjoyable beer.

12oz bottle, a single, and just under the wire for the eponymous month to expire, as the snow flies outside, sigh.
This beer pours a clear, medium brassy amber colour, with one finger of finely foamy pale beige head, which leaves a few ocean swells of lace around the glass as it duly seeps away.
It smells of nutty caramel malt, soft toffee sweetness, a flinty metallic note, and dusty, leafy, earthy hops. The taste is bready caramel malt, a nice, subtle toastiness, some tame generic orchard fruitiness, more stoney, flinty notes, and understated noble earthy, leafy hops.
The carbonation is present, but doing its thing well under the radar, the body medium-light in weight, and generally smooth, a hard water character the only fly in the ointment, and a non-consequential one at that. It finishes off-dry, the malt trailing off, and the fruit and hops kicking it up a notch.
While this is nothing that is going to knock your socks (or lederhosen) off, I submit that that isn't the point here. I can totally envision just putting these back, in frothy mug form, all night, with little further beer consideration required. Bread, caramel, soft biscuit, balanced-enough hops, and a slight uptick in alcohol. There - all thinking done - now just drink 'em. Next year, at any rate.

Appearance: Very thick amber lager. I definitely didn't expect that. It is definitely the darkest Märzen I've seen. Good lacing. Looks like an excellent session.
Smell: Faint caramel and mineral water. This needs more hops to be a good Oktoberfest for me.
Taste/Mouthfeel: There's really no distinct flavor here. Not much more than caramel and a slight hint of ambiguous fruit. It's also average in the mouthfeel department. Ok carbonation and ok smoothness.
Overall Drinkability: Looks nice, but misses the mark everywhere else.

Poured medium amber with a 1/2 finger head that stuck around somewhat to the end. Smell surprised me a bit with some sweet malty chocolate. Taste pleasantly bordering on a bock, and leaning toward an English Brown. Not sure if that's what its supposed to do, but I sure like it. Very malty mild chocolate starting semi-sweet ending semi-dry. Mouthfeel was on the thinner side of medium. Not watery, but rather very drinkable. My first couple experiences with Marzens were... meh. Despite that, I have revisited the style this year with some great finds. This one was a gift and definitely the best find. Thanks Jay. Without hesitation I would say Brooklyn Oktoberfest is my favorite Marzen to date, and I would recommend this to anybody in the mood for something malty to put them in the spirit of Autumn.

Brooklyn Oktoberfest is Brooklyn Brewery's homage to the traditional German style of brewing. Although this beer is brewed as Marzen/Oktoberfest, the look and scent are almost indicitve of a porter or moderate stout. This beer pours with an amber-brown body and a light tan head that rises and falls quickly. There is a mild carbonation that carries the roasted, almost cocoa like scent emanating from the glass. Fruit and spice accents can be detected in this brew as well. The taste is what you would expect after smelling Brooklyn Oktoberfest, as it starts with a malty, sweet flavor. Spiced notes are present throughout and the sip finishes with a slightly dry, bitter taste. Overall the beer has a roasted feel to it; a perfect compliment to fall weather.

BB: JAN 2013 is printed on the neck of the bottle.
Dark auburn color in the glass, delicate collar of lace and a thin skim settles across the surface. Clarity is good with only the slightest of haze. The smell is bready and nutty, malt forward and pleasant.
Flavor is similarly malt forward, multigrain bread and a touch of grape fruitiness also. An odd tanginess mars the otherwise straightforward flavors, body is light in feel. Something seems a bit off here, would advise skipping this beer in favor of other Oktoberfests, the tangy quality is a dealbreaker for me.

12oz bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a clear dark copper with a one finger white head. Not too good head retention but ok lacing.
Aroma is lots of caramel and toffee along with a slight metallic note. Some spice German hops as well.
The flavor is a mix of metal and caramel although thankfully the metallic taste subsides as the beer warms. Some burnt sugar and a little toast but the malt gets to be a little astringent at times. Some hay is buried underneath along wit spicy hops. Sweetness is moderate but does leave a lot of stickyness on the finish.
Overall, a very average Oktoberfest. A little too sticky and too much astringency. Not really one to seek out as there are many better examples of the style out there.

A 355ml bottle with a BB of Feb 2013. Picked up recently from Trembling Madness in York. I'm interested to see how this stacks up against true German fest biers.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear coppery-brown colour with good carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a while before settling as a surface layer. Aroma of sweet, nutty caramel malt with hints of grain and earthiness. All malt, no hops.
Tastes of caramel malt with a mild, dry finish. Slightly nutty, with hints of grain, caramel, faint brown sugar and subtle stewed hops. A touch of sweetness. Dry, with a mild bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, light and tingly - perhaps a tad overcarbonated. Body OK but on the thin side. Slightly astringent, with an aftertaste of caramel malt.
A rather average märzen - it doesn't stand up to German examples of the style. A bit too sweet and under-attenuated, along with a lack of noble hop character (both aroma and bitterness). I guess I'd like it to be crisper and slightly hoppier. It's a decent beer if taken on its own terms, though nothing special. Worth trying but no need to seek it out.

I had this poured from a tap into a large mug at a local Oktoberfest and then tried it again a few days later from a 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
Appearance: Pours a clear copper with a small to medium head
Smell: Sweet and malty
Taste: Malty, nutty, caramel, hop bitterness
Mouthfeel: Medium body, smooth, crisp with nice carbonation
Overall: Balanced, fruity and bready with a slight hop finish (on the bitter end). Fits the typical taste for a Märzen style beer. I personally think that the poured-from-the-tap version was better than out of a bottle (it’s possible the bottle just wasn’t quite as good).

Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance – Pours an amber brown color with a one finger off white head. The head fades relatively fast to leave only a very light level of lacing.
Smell- The aroma is a combination of sweet and roasted malt. The sweetness is of a caramel nature with the malt being of a roasted brown bread smell. Mixed with these aromas are some lighter notes of an earthy hop with hints of spice.
Taste – The taste begins with a nice dose of caramel and roasted malt. As the flavor advances further some earthy hop flavors come to the tongue along with a nutty and spicy flavor. As the flavor advances to the end, the sweet dries out slightly and with a bit more earthy hop coming to the tongue, it creates a drier flavor on the tongue; in the end the beer leaves a nice crisp, yet satisfyingly sweet roasted flavor on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the thicker than average side with a decent creamy feel and a carbonation level that was rather average The creamy body was very nice for the roasted malt, nutty, and spice flavors of the brew while the carbonation level made for a good and easy drinking beer
Overall – A very nice refreshing and tasty Oktoberfest. Its blend of sweet, roasty, and drinkability make it one very nice session for the season.

A: Clear amber to red with a white, dish soapy head leaving minimal lacing
S: Bready malts up front, kind of the soft/moist cinnamon bread you get from a king cake. Some fruity notes, namely strawberry, but in cake form. A very bread-forward aroma on this one.
T: Taste follows through with the bread. Big malt character on this one. Caramel sweetness with some tree fruit through the middle. Dough on the finish.

12 oz bottle into pint glass. best before MAR 2013.
A: crystal clear copper color.
S: sweet caramel on a pretty smooth nose. nothing over the top either from the malt side or the hops side.
T: starts tingly. crystal malts dominate the body. the finish is pretty chewy but with enough bitter, roasted flavor that really dries things out.
M: a little bit more on the fine side of bubbles. medium body.
D: not too shabby. worth giving a shot if in the mood for a marzen, but dont think you are gonna be blown away.
