Poured from 22 oz bomber into teku glass.

A: Poured very deep brown with a slight reddish tint. Nice 3 finger off white head with some slight lacing.

S: Sweet fruits, some spice mixed with roasted malts. Subtle earthiness to the nose.

T: Dark fruity flavors with some spiciness. Hints of citrus, and clove with the familiar Belgian yeasts. Alcohol is nicely hidden in the background. Nice sweetness without being to much.

M: Medium body with lots of carbonation. Second glass had nice head even after sitting out on the counter open for a while.

O: Really nice Belgian dark. Very enjoyable. It's easy to overlook the almost 10% ABV, and end up finishing the bomber with a nice buzz.

A: Dark red in color. Very large head that remained around for quite a while. Left decent lacing.

S: Smell of lemons, very citrus, crisp, smell of honey comes off rather strong.

T: Taste honey, some darker fruits, very citrus in flavor. Bitter too. Tad bit spicy, in a very good way though.

M: Rather dry, almost like a wine. Medium body but with high amounts of carbonation.

O: Somewhat unique, a rather nice beer, definitely will dry again if when i get the opportunity.

Popped the cork and poured the dark red/purple elixir into a dogfish signature glass. Foamy off white head w some lacing and retention. Smells of candy and fruit and a very dry wine like scent that's almost musty but in a good way. Initial taste is dark fruit sweetness and candy w some honey and a very refreshing dry finish. Carbonation is phenomenal. Each sip I get something a little different. Sometimes very sweet and sometimes a but sour but always interesting and I am really enjoying this beer. Bravo Brooklyn.

1 pt 9.4 Fl oz from FM.

A- dark brownish red, with a big fluffy two finger head.

S - lemon zest, cherry, malts

T- Faint chocolate, boozy, some citrus appears later. Seems muted. Some additional sweetness (perhaps the honey or the belgian sugar mentioned on the label) presents as it gets warm.

M - comes in smooth, gets real prickly, then finishes dry. Reminiscent of wine to a degree.

O - Working towards the 2nd glass, I am kind of torn on where this beer stands. It seems like a decent offering, but I'll be leaning toward Local 1 vs 2 in the future.

Poured into a tulip glass

Appearance- A very dark amber pour with a thick, bubbling cream coloured head that slowly dissipates with time and leaves nice lacing around the glass.

Smell- A very light and fruity smell with a strong citrus accent. Almost has a kind of grassy hop undertone as well.

Taste- I was expecting more. Light and fruity but nothing really stands out to me. It is refreshing with a very crisp and almost dry feeling but again, nothing really poked my taste buds. The ABV of 9% is masked very well but almost makes this have a wine taste - but that is probably just the fruit talking.

Mouthfeel- A good amount of carbonation. I'm not the biggest fan of carbonation but it made this very refreshing as it tingles throughout the mouth and tongue. Crisp and dry finish. Leaves your mouth wanting more.

Overall- I definitely enjoyed this beer. I will probably never buy it again for $10 per 750mL bottle though. This beer is more for a nice spring/summer day with a very refreshing tone and fruit undertones. I'm glad this is 9% ABV or else I would have been more disappointed. Brooklyn has made better brews than this.

Pours deep brown with an off-white foam head. Some spotty lace.

Nose of dark fruit, some burnt sugars, some dark malt.

Nice balanced brew with dark rich malt, some burnt sugars, some dark fruit, raisin-like. Bitterness comes up and is in good balance with the sweet. Beer dries out at the end, with some light bitter maltiness.

Fuller bodied with appropriate carbonation.

Nice drinkable beer. 9% is a surprise, as the alcohol does not assert itself. Sneaky beer, as you can get thru the bomber, but will have a hard time getting out of your chair.

A: Dark brownish black, with a generous tan head and just a touch of lacing left behind in its wake.

S: Sugar, fruits, raisins, sweet malts, crisp and clean and simple.

T/M: Very tasty with lots of sugary, fruity flavors up front, gradually overtaken by some burnt malts, the distinctive taste of Belgian yeasts, and a subtle touch of bitterness. Real smooth and creamy, and it goes down very easy.

O: A great Belgian-style ale, very sweet and delicious.

No bottle date that I can find, just an 0191 marked in an appropriate square on the back of the label. Bottle is probably about a year old.

A: Opens with a loud pop and immediately starts gushing all over my mousepad. *sigh* Pours a nice mahogany with a big fluffy, airy tan head. Fades very slowly. Excellent head retention but only a few tufts of fluffy lacing left behind.

S: Very sweet. Lots of caramel and brown sugar. Some raisin, fig and banana back it up. Just a touch earthy.

T: Toffee, caramel and brown sugar up front. Raisin and some other mild dark fruit mixed in. A little metallic twang in there. Turns a bit earthy and spicy in the middle and into the finish. Finish is quite dry with a bit of toffee, brown sugar and plums it seems. More spiciness lingers in the aftertaste, black pepper it seems.

M: Full medium body but higher carbonation cuts it down and makes it seem lighter and airier.

O: On the maltier, sweeter side of BSDAs. Not as much fruit as most. Surprisingly ends drying despite the initial sweetness. Pretty tasty and drinkable, though nothing stands out to give it amazing marks. A solid example of the style.

Light fizzy head fades fairly quickly, light lacing, dark murky fig molasses brown color.

Nose some darker malts, dark fruits, honey apple, light fig date like, touch of phenols, hint of booze, touch of citrus, fruity Belgian esters.

Taste light booze Belgian esters, hint of phenols, nice fruits light apple pear like, fig date as well, molasses and candy, bit of bitterness, hint of powdered cocoa, light grassy too. Finish is drier but sticky, molasses honey and fruity esters lingering, light booze as well.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, nice carb, some warming slight tingly booze.

Overall great beer. Well done Belgian additions, between the esters, fruit, booze, and even the light phenols bring a nice addition and go well. The fruits, honey, citrus, etc, all go really well. It's a nice winter style sipping Belgian beer.

25.4 bottle poured into my Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Ruddy, chocolate brown with a big billowy 3” tan head that slowly recedes to about a ½”. Very nice lacing.

Smell: Belgian yeast and spice mixed with dark fruit (predominantly raisin).

Taste: Dark fruit (again raisin) with hints of spice, some sweetness from the Belgian candy sugar. Very flavorful with some bready malts serving as a nice backbone. The alcohol is completely masked.

Mouthfeel: Clean and crisp and well carbonated.

Overall: Best example of Belgian style dark ale I have ever had from an American brewery, the only one I would buy again. Delicious, closer to a double in flavor than an SDA but at 9% ABV I understand the classification.

Pours a dark, ruddy brown with a reddish hue, two plus inch head is coarse and tan. Dissipates very slowly.

Smells of bretty yeast, figs, molasses and mild nuttiness.

Tastes of mild nutty bitterness, molasses, bretty yeast, and hints of red wine tartness.

Full body with fluffy carbonation that fills the mouth.

A pretty good Belgian style ale, but a little bland in the flavor department compared to many of the others I've had. A great option for those that otherwise might find beers in this style to be too rich for them, but I was expecting a little more. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying it and would have it again.

Served in a crytal snifter. Semi-opaque mahogany colored with an inch high thick head of foam that settles out to a finely bubbled cap. Very low, almost imperceptible aroma of toasty malt and pear. Flavors of toasted malt, hints of cocoa, ripe fruit and marshmallow. Slightly metallic in the finish, some clove and plum lingers, along with a subtle bitterness. Crisp and clean mouthfeel, but somewhat full. Decent beer overall, but I was expecting more depth.

A: Dark amber with a frothy tan one-finger head that lingers. Great lacing.

S: Belgian yeast, malts, dark fruits (cherries, dates, raisins).

T: Follows nose. Complex, sweet, tart, tangy. Cherries, chocolate, molassas. A banana finish.

M: Highly carbonated with a medium mouthfeel

O: Honestly, too many flavors attacking the palate. A bit too sweet for me. But an interesting after dinner drink.

750mL bottle, cellared for about a year, enjoyed at a recent beer tasting alongside the Local #1. Cheers for holding on to this Derrick!

Poured into a wine glass. Dark, hazy milk chocolate in colour, with a creamy head that survives as a thick ring, and produces some islands of foam and good lacing. Not sure if the aging contributed to the thickness of this brew, as it is quite murky.

Nose is a mix of fruit (banana peel), chocolate, caramel, yeast, mild funkiness.

Similar tasting notes as in the nose, which makes for an enjoyable dark. After warming for a few minutes, the chocolate and caramel rises above the fruity yeast notes, and is coupled with a warming sugary base. Smooth, mild carbonation, medium bodied.

Nice dark ale. I certainly think aging had to have some effect on the brew's complexion, as it feels and tastes mellowed out. I haven't tried a fresh bottle of this before, which I now hope to do in the near future!

A-a dark mahogany with some ruby highlights with two fingers worth of creamy head

S-dark bread like malts, dark fruit, light molasses, and Belgian yeast. Not getting much citrus smell.

T-taste matches the smell, bread malt, light chocolate, sweet honey, slight nutty taste, and maybe just a light hint of citrus. Alcohol is well hidden.

M-very prickly carbonation, light to medium body

Overall I think I like this better than other reviewers. I am actually glad I didn't get much of a citrus peel smell or taste. Not the best BSDA I have had but its not bad either.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful brown head and leaves quite a bit of lacing. The beer itself is a nice and delicious black.

Smell: The honey really comes out very well in a chalice and combining with the chocolate and roasted malts makes for a very good treat.

Taste: Roasted malts and chocolate. The honey and citrus do not come in unless it is a little warm and makes it taste very good. The honey complements the chocolate very well.

Mouthfeel: Carbonated and a little thick.

Overall: A wonderful brew and worth having more than once and a while.

picked it up from a new liquor store that had it for an unbelievable price. the 1st time i had it was in my very early beer drinking days, and so i didn't have the palate to appreciate it much. so here we go.

a - poured slowly into a brooklyn brewery snifter i picked up on my visit. poured a black cherry brown with a 1.5 inch off white head. quite the looker. retention is just okay, and there's minimal lacing down the glass

s - bright, fruity, and pleasntly burnt. caramel, raspberry, black cherry, dark chocolate. my goodness this thing smells good.

t - tastes like the smell. lots of raspberry and chocolate with a toasted caramel malt background. some nice sour notes highlight the flavors alongside sugary, molassy esters. and like the local 1, the belgian yeast is present but not dominant, which i can really appreciate.

m - light with a healthy dose of carbonation. this thing goes down easy and would serve as a great dessert beverage.

a beautiful version of the belgian strong dark ale. this has instantaneously become one of my favorite dark ales. thanks BK brewery!

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: deep, rich amber-brown hue which lets ruby highlights through when held up to the light. Head is three fingers of frothy light-tan foam. Quite nice.

Smell: rich, malty aroma with a lot of chocolate character. There's a little bit of earthy hoppiness as well, but this is pretty mild. Overall not bad; enticing, even.

Taste: rich flavor with chocolate right on top, followed by some light bready character and a hint of fruitiness (raisins, mostly). There's a hint of vegetal hops at the end, and bitterness is quite low compared to sweetness. Not bad, and stylistically accurate.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a great big carbonation yielding a pretty massive creaminess. Ba dow!

Overall: a tasty enough beer, although it lacks complexity. I would probably have this again.

Served in a snifter glass.

Appearance: Dark almost opaque brown, with a thick tan-white head on a gentle pour rising to about 3/4".

Smell: Yeasty scent, pretty7 strong if you ask me, after laying the glass down you still feel it in your nose.

Taste: Holy yeast, little sweet light light bitterness and packing a punch with flavor.

Mouth: Medium to heavy carbonation, sharp texture which would quench any thirst. Best of all how sticky!

Overall: A real gem, It's easy to find and won't hit you in the pockets if you're already a fan of premium beers. Drink up fellas (and Ladies), Salud!

Looking good, I really like local 1. Let's see here, nice tan head, color is brownish black and no light penetrates. Some lacing on my schooner. The taste is of strong alcohol when consumed with my pizza. Finishing the bottle the flavors are more complex, low hops profile, some burnt coffee, spice, sugar. The body is full, it's sticky and pleasant with good carbonation. Overall, the spice of this offering is where I was lost. I guess an imperial stout is what I was looking for.

Quite the looker. Pours a dark burnt brown. Very rich looking, actually looks thickish. The head is also quite thick, slightly offwhite, and fluffy up top. Good retention, though lacing is lacking.

The Belgian yeast and sugars are fairly obvious to detect. Slight spiciness in the nose. Malty.

It's really good. Spice and malt up front. Belgian sugar in the middle. Alcohol and honey in the swallow.

Complex...sweet and spicy early on. More sweetness as it works its way back. The sweetness stays into the finish as a slightl tartness makes an appearance. The finish is crisp with good carbonation and heat from the alcohol.

This is a world class beer. Everything about it is top notch and it gets better as it warms.

pours a dark brown shade with a healthy finger-plus beige head; decent retention and lacing.

nose offers roasted malt, a touch of chocolate, dark fruits, spices, and yeast. maybe a hint of hoppiness in the background. flavor mostly follows the nose. you have your traditional elements of a BSDA along with some more subdued stout characteristics. complex, balanced, and enjoyable, though doesn't move the earth.

medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation. whereas they nailed it with local 1 in my opinion, here BB pulls off a "mere" solid brew. that said, it's definitely worth a try.

750 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with a long lasting off-white head and a lot of lacing. Yeasty aroma follows by chocolate, dark fruit and hints of hops. Body is full and smooth. Chocolate, dark fruit spices, Belgium yeast, brown sugar, earthy hops fill the mouth. Finish is long and very spicy. Complex, delicious brew.

Appearance: Dark red/plum color with a gorgeous foamy tan head that persisted throughout.

Smell: Honey, kiwi, melons, figs, Belgian candi sugar, yeast.

Taste: Fruitiness takes on a more mature character - prunes and tart apples. Bready malts complement the dark fruit/molasses combination and give it some nice depth. Noticeable alcohol warmth combined with a surprising carbonic bite on the tongue make this one a sipper, but a pleasant one.

I haven't had this one in a while. Don't mind if I do!

Served in an Olde Hickory shaped glass.

A: Poured a dark brown, red, rose color, that was definitely more on the darker end of the spectrum than anything. The head was a frothy, mildy off-white one that stayed as such (like most Brooklyn beers).

S: Smelled like a honeysuckle with Belgian sugar.... straight up. Also, I got Brooklyn's signature fresh-filtered water hop profile.

T: I got some honey and Pixie Stick dust on the finish. The Belgian side of the house wasn't too "Belgian-y" at all and the floral component was quite fresh.

M: No one does the who spritzy, well-carbonated, refreshingly great high octane brews like Brooklyn. The sweetness was of the organic variety and the lacing was moderate.

O: I'll still give my love to Local 1 first, but these are TOTALLY different beers, and both very good!
