Here in Brooklyn we’ve combined European malt and hops, Belgian dark sugar, and raw wildflower honey from a New York family farm to create Brooklyn Local 2. Our special Belgian yeast adds hints of spice to the dark fruit, caramel, and chocolate flavors. After 100% bottle re-fermentation, the beer reveals a marvelous dry complexity, enjoyable by itself or at the dinner table.

Live review. Poured from the 1 pint 9.4 fl. oz. bottle that I purchased at Heinen's in Mayfield Village a few weeks ago into my Cooperstown Beverage Trail clean clear pint glass. Batch 3518 printed on back label.
A Pours a pleasing dark brown body with a light brown head lasting a good three minutes and then some. Close inspection of the head revealed a very cool effect: hundreds of bubbles stack on top of each other like so many ball bearings.
S Sweet malt and Belgian yeasts with some honey and maybe some light raisin smell. Yum.
T Thin sweet malt taste with the bite of some yeast and perhaps some hops as well. There is a dark caramel, almost chocolate taste as well. Fairly true to the style, the yeast driving home the Belgian heritage of the style. Edit: There is a very distant (I mean like 20 minutes after last sip) taste of honey that I appreciate. I increased my taste rating from 3.0 to 3.5 for this alone.
M Full with moderately high ABV and dark sweet malt tastes. That being said it is a bit thinner and more watery than other great Belgian Strong Dark Ales. It lacks the pleasing syrupy sweet malt taste (and feel I suppose) of the best of the Belgian Strong Dark Ales. It is also not as strong as better Belgian Strong Dark Ales.
D Good but not compared to others in this style. Gulden Draak is an example of a BSDA with more "umphh" behind it.
Notes: A nice addition to the Brooklyn lineup but the thin malt and yeasty aftertaste makes it more like a Pale Ale that happens to be dark in appearance. I have to say that I am dissapointed in this beer because I was so looking forward to it. I remember enjoying Local 1 and then I heard that this was coming out..and BSDA is one of my favorite styles...perhaps I built it up too much in my mind but count me dissapointed.

750 ml "champagne"-corked bottle, shared at local tasting, thanks to Sigrid S. ABV is 9%. Brown colour, large off-white head. Sweetish aroma, some stale notes, not impressive. Medium sweet flavour, fruity, some stale notes again, a bit disappointing.

I am moving this weekend and have been working down my cellar a bit to expedite the move. I have been hanging on to this one for about a year or so I think. Nose is plums and figs and dark chocolate with a yeasty overlay.
The flavor is understated and tasty, with an earthy, bready, woody note that also features grapeskin, chocolate, dried fruit and fine cordials. The texture starts with light caronation but finishes with a velvety, rich coating that letsyou realy enjoy the complexity. I don't know if the year of aging heped but this is very easy to drink, has a low alcohol profile for the abv, and presents as a nice alternative to some of the more overbearing Belgian style bombers you see often from big American brewers.
