This is a dark brown cloudy beer with a two finger thick tan head which quickly goes away to a thin layer, light lacing. Nice smell, does have that Belgium musty (yeast?) smell. Medium thickness and lots of bubbly carbonation. The taste is good, Belgium sugars and yeast, with a sweet malt type flavor with a dry aftertaste, the malts overtake any type of bitterness. Overall a decent BSDA.

750ml bottle from July 2012.

Pours quite dark, a hazy deep brown. Two and a half finger head has good retention, but leaves only splotchy lacing. Aroma of both light and dark fruit: white grapes, raisins, pear. Some sugary sweetness too.

Flavor is drier than the nose would suggest. Lots of ripe fruit character, some pear and caramel apple most notably. Candi sugar and maybe a touch of honey are apparent, too, but a light tartness keeps them subdued. The finish is clean and dry. The vigorous carbonation settles down not long after the pour to a refined smoothness, decidedly so for a bottle refermented beer.

Local 2 nicely complements its fraternal twin in Brooklyn's big bottle lineup -- richer, more malt-forward, but maintaining an excellent texture. A great dark Belgian ale.

Poured from a 750 ml corked bottle into a Duvel tulip glass. Bottle date code of 0751.

Appearance: Pours a dark and hazy brownish amber with some hints of ruby and orange. Huge four finger light tan/beige head which slowly fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: Big aroma of spicy and funky Belgian yeast with lots of malt and dark fruit hints. Belgian yeast upfront with hints of funk and clove, pepper, and some cinnamon spicing. Some of the champagne yeast is detected as well. Big deep malt presence with hints of caramel, toast, biscuit, and some roasty chocolate hints. Big dark fruit scents with hints of dark grapes, cherry, raisin, plums, prune, fig, and dates. Also some fruit hints of banana, apple, and pear along with some citrus orange peel. Belgian candied sugar and some honey hints add to the sweetness. Hints of grassy hops in the background. A very good and complex aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a yeasty Belgian taste with dark malt and lots of fruit esters. Spicy Belgian yeast with notes of funk, cloves, cinnamon, and pepper. Sweet Belgian candied sugar with some notes of sweet honey. Big bready malt presence with a taste of biscuit, caramel, grains, toast, and some chocolate roast. Dried fruit notes of banana, pear, and apple. A little citrus orange peel and some lemon. Big taste of dark fruit with notes of dark cherry, grapes, plum, prune, raisin, dates, and fig. Some earthy grassy hop bitterness comes in towards the finish. A very nice and tasty combination of spices, sugar and fruit sweetness, and bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Very spicy, juicy, and somewhat prickly. Starts rather sweet and finishes very dry. Alcohol heat is tame.

Overall: A really good dark Belgian ale. Good spices and fruit esters with a solid dark roasty malt presence.

been dying to try this one for a long time, ever since I fell in love with the local 1. thanks to a wonderful trade with thebrewo, I finally got to try this. it pours a light brown dried date sort of color, allowing plenty of light to pass through, but still holding on to all the richness of a darker malt body. a huge frothy head rises up, tan and permanent, beautiful. the nose is sweet like brown sugar, malt driven, with Belgian candy sugar, a robust and intriguing yeast train, dark chocolate, and molasses. very complex but calculated, theres a lot going on, but its more than just a mishmash of different parts, its comes together amazingly well. the flavor reminds me a lot of dogfish heads raison d'etre, with that familiar raison like dried fruit character and the Belgian abbey style sweetness. there might be oats in this too, its got that similar flavor and feel. the spicy sweet finish is just right, long and lingering, and the alcohol is only there once it warms up. it reminds me of fresh baked spice bread in a lot of ways, thanksgivingish. great feel with a fuller body and quite a bit of carbonation. it coats the palate with its warming flavors, and leaves a very satisfying feeling behind. I was fortunate enough to share this bottle with some good friends, but would have had no problem consuming the entire thing by myself. this is really outstanding, every bit as entertaining as the local 1.
