Notes:
Brooklyn version. This brew is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett's concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other's brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor.
Dry-hopped w/ American Amarillo and Palisade.

Shared from a growler by mac300 - Poured into a tulip - Had the German versiob abd was anxious to try this one.
Appearance: Pours a hazy, and incredibly lit golden color with a small white head and minimal lacing. I think it's a growler thing.
Smell: Hops, bubblegum, banana and some clove which resides in the background. Bubblegum stands out the most to me with this beer. I was told this occurs when yeast is forced to attenuate at certain temps.
Taste: Strong flavor of bubble gum initially, followed by sugar, apple, honey and some clove. I really like the flavor of this beer, and both versions. I think their intentions are spot on and the power that comes across in the flavor is quite satisfying.
Mouthfeel: Small touch of carbonation with a medium alcohol burn. Remember, this beer is almost 8% alcohol. Slippery and easy to go down.
Drinkability: This is one of my favorite beers this year. It is smoothe, sweet and refreshing. A great summer beer. Seek it out.

Fresh Growler purchased at Shoreline Beverage in Huntington, NY
A - clouded, straw yellow color with a fluffy white head that settled to a layer, leaving spots of lacing.
S - sweet, banana, clove, and yeast/wheat aromas.
T - fine tasting brew, sweet start with a banana bubble gum flavor, some yeasty taste midway with a bitter hop bite on the finish.
M - light bodied, crisp carbonation.
D - very drinkable brew.
Final Note: I'm glad that these two brewmasters are friends and that they made this beer.

Growler filled at Capone's and graciously shared by mac300.
Appearance: Pours a golden color with a partly transparent body and a huge white head and nice lacing.
Smell: Banana clove and citrus rind. This version has more Orange Zest in the nose, bold American hop attribute, than the German Counter part.
Taste: I think the dry grassy hop of the German version was more bitterness but the hops stand out more in this the American version. Nonetheless there is a fruit attribute, comprised of peaches banana apple and splash of orange with honey drizzle and sprinkle of clove. Very nice.
Mouthfeel: medium body with low carbonation.
Drinkability: This is certainly an easy drinking beer. Refreshing and surprisingly quaffable. Be careful that 8% will sneak up on you in this one.
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

I've read up on this to be a sort of hybrid between the Schneider Hefeweisse and the Brooklyn East India Pale. Two beers that individually do not thrill me whatsoever. Together, a different story. This beer is rich, as evidenced through the appearance of a dense white head and a body of translucent cloudiness. The flavor is what struck me, perfectly balanced hoppiness (West Coast?) against the hefeweisse malt sweetness (yes banana and clove, but just the essence not overpowering). I could drink this beer all niht long. Excellent! A must for hop heads and weisse beer fans alike. Get it fresh on tap if you can.

Pours a cloudy orange with a white bubbly head -- good retention.
Smells of freshly mowed grass with orange and spice backed by a floral bouquet.
Grassy with a bitter herb punch, followed by sweet citrus that flows into the slick malt backbone and is lost in deliciousness. This a big beer with lots of flavor and subtle complexity.

Looks like a Belgian Pale Ale, cloudy orange in color with a bright white head. The head has good retention and a slightly sticky lace.
Very fruity nose, smells like banana bread with lots of spices. Ever so faint scent of bubble gum.
Taste is a little bit fruity banana and biscuity. Pineapple in background. Straw with some alcohol esters in the swallow.
A bit spicy, ever so sweet, mostly cleansing bitter finish, along with some heat from the alcohol.
I'd heard good things about this collaboration, and while the beer is good, it's not world class. The smell is sharp, but the taste is slightly duller. Still a good beer.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy dirty beige color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry hoppy notes with some citrus notes with a heavy side of wheat malt with light residual sugar notes. Taste is a good mix between a solid wheat malt backbone with light residual sugar which are balanced by some pretty dry hoppy notes with light citrus undertones. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Very solid and unique offering. I would definitely like to try again.

A - Pours a clear orange brown with three fingers of craggy white head. Nice retention, but not much lacing.
S - Nice citrus aroma, with a big orange presence. Also quite floral.
T - Nice floral hops, though the hops have likely faded a bit. Held on to this bottle a bit too long. Good wheat malt presence. A bit of spice. Some hop bitterness on the finish. Pretty refreshing tasting beer.
M - Medium mouthfeel that is petty smooth, with a semi-dry bitter finish.
O - Would love to try a fresh bottle to get a bit more hop bitterness, but this is still a very nice brew.

A-Cloudy yellow orange, carbonated, some sediment, two finger head.
S-Bananas, clove, yeast, wheat, orange
T-Clove, orange, bananas, some yeast, wheat and spice notes.
M-Medium bodied, well carbonated.
O-Weizenbock is an under utilized style, one I enjoy from the few I've had.

Appearance: It poured very cloudy yellow when it settled it was still somewhat hazy in the carbonation. The head was creamy white domed in the middle. The lace was thick and the residue was sticky.
Smell: It was like a citrus fruit bouquet, orange, grapefruit and lemon with floral accents.
Taste: I knew the hops were coming and they still caught me off guard. Great floral hops taste with some bitter grapefruit. Then came weizen traits banana and clove with allot of malt.
Mouthfeel: Some bite with a chewy dry finish.
Overall: Overall complex, but great. It was like an IPA Wiezen Bock. Three styles that are great by themselves or combined

This poured out as a hazy golden yellow color with a fluffy white head on top. The head leaves a nice spotted amount of lacing on the glass with a decent retention. The smell of the beer gives off a soft wheat aroma along with plenty of hops too. The taste of the beer started with the wheat upfront that fades into a pretty strong bitterness that the hops bring to the beer. The mouthfeel is light bodied and smooth. Overall this beer was pretty nice.

A. Pours a hazy yellow/orange with a one and a half finger creamy white head that slowly recedes.
S. Nice orange/ lemon citrus aroma, some nice floral hop notes, and some nice spice.
T. Nice yeasty spiciness, clove, sweet malt, a touch of banana, and nice floral citrus hops - orange and lemon.
M. Medium body with fairly high carbonation.
D. A nice collaboration beer with interesting contributions from both parties. Also my first of the style (style #99).

Poured from a corked-and-caged bottle. The cork shot out of the bottle on its own after loosening the cage - a first for me.
Dark golden/copper in color with a rocky head. Very hazy.
Aroma is hop-forward, but well-balanced with toasty malt and yeast. Generally floral and honey-sweet in the nose. Alcohol scent is faint.
Hop flavors are prominent but not overwhelming; notes of orange peel, grapefruit, honey and peach dominate. Faint bitterness in the finish - much less than expected.
Almost medium-bodied with tingling carbonation.
I'm extremely impressed with this collaboration, and I'll be on the lookout for the Schneider version.

Had the pleasure to taste the Brooklyner - Schneider Hopfen Weisse at Munich - Bavaria.
Great Weizenbier - with an outstanding hop aroma. Opaque amber, medium white head, orange, fruity, banana aromas, some grapefruit . Nicely balanced, with bitter finish...
Worth checking it out, any time,

Bottle to Weizen
750ml c/c
Big thanks to my wife for finding this in upstate NY for me on a business trip.
App- A darker yellow with orange radiants and a big puffy head. Great three fingers of head and a decent amount of cling and lace.
Smell- A yeasty balanced hop aroma. A little bit of sour on the nose but I did walk throug a casino before opening. My nose could be off.
Taste- A lot behind this one. Very hoppy, yeasty, a little bitter with a nice wheat backbone. This was very tasty, crisp and refreshing. Hit the spot at midnight in LV when it was still 85 out.
Mouth- Medium bodied and medium/ high carbed. Not much remains but the bitter hops.
Drink- This was a big want of mine for a while. Very glad the wife was nice enough to bring one home. I would love to have another bottle. Also want to find the other version.

This is my second time with this brew, first of this bottling. My sister-in-law shared this 750ml with my wife and I.
Bottle -> Weyerbacher tulip
A - Hazy straw gold, tall big bubble white head, light lacing, 1/4" head retained through the tasting
S - Light creamy lemon citrus, fieldy spices, sharp hop notes
T - Huge sharp hops up front, very light watery citrus in the middle, long bitter finish
M - Thin to medium
O - This is a good beer. However, I prefer the other bottling to this one. I'm fairly certain that one was done in Germany and this here. The German one had a much creamier, almost lemon meringue flavor to it that was much more dessert like. This very is much thinner and hop forward.

From a 750 mL custom amber champagne bottle with no freshness date. This is a pale weizenbock, brewed with German pilsner malt and wheat, Willamette and Cascade, dry-hopped with Amarillo and Palisades, and fermented and bottle-conditioned with Schneider yeast. Pours a chill-hazed gold, with medium carbonation and two fingers of frothy head that retains well and leaves decent lacing. Very cloudy on the second pour. Pretty much all hops in the nose, with notes of stewed pineapple, citrus, mango, orange, pine resin, green tea and peaches and apricots later. Pretty similar on the palate, with the addition of floral alcohol, moderate bitterness and a dash of spicy/clovey yeast. The wheat and yeast really take a long time to come out, and the lees are very bitter, so be careful there. The body is dry, well-carbonated and warming, with chalky dry yeast in the second pour. This is an interesting brew, and one that is hard to judge as any established style - an American weizenbock perhaps? It is not very German, nor is there that much yeast or wheat, but it is tasty and much better than Schneider's version.

Bottle into Chimay goblet. Poured in low altitude Galway, Ireland.
A: Pours a two finger head, disappointingly thin, of poor retention, and very little cream. Semi transparent yellow colour. More haziness was expected.
Sm: Very floral and estery. Delightful. A medium strength scent. I'm excited to try it.
T: Very floral, but the esters are more limited. Alcohol does punch through, unfortunately. Body is very hoppy. There isn't a clear three act division, though the finish is comprised on lingering body flavour and alcohol. Not a great finish to an otherwise well done beer, throwing off the balance. Built well for the style, although admittedly atypically - nothing wrong with effective innovation. The first two thirds is much more flavourful than the last third. I like it.
Mf: Moderate thickness to support the flavour, but to the detriment of suitability to the style. Delightfully coarse, bringing out the notes of the body. Certainly not light. Wet until towards the finish, where some slight dryness enters in.
Dr: The off-balance and the alcohol are severe limitations for this beer. Clean up the finish and focus the flavour, and it'd be an A.

Tap at Macs Steel Creek.
Lightly cloudy gold pour. Just a ring of white bubbles.
Aroma, caramel, malt some spicey grain.
Taste starts with some malty caramel. Light apple, caramel covered apple and a grassiness. Clove, allspice, banana some nice herbal hops.
Less overbearing banana and clove, which is what usually turns me off to wheats and wheat bocks. This was really enjoyable.
Lighter side of medium. Lively carbonation keeps this from being sticky. Goes down like a regular wheat even though it is 8.5%.

Picked up from Julio's on a whim, pretty darn glad I did.
A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a crystal clear golden hue with a big, rocky over two finger white head that slumped down to become a creamy white blanket atop the gold with heavy side lacing. Really nice looking.
S - Very light aromas here. Getting some of the light spice notes, but not any of the banana that others have stated. I do get plenty of alcohol though.
T - Much like the nose its kinda like a hoppy weize. You've got the nice yeast/spice notes and just the faintest of banana. Some light almost grassy hop notes but again, very light.
M - Really nice carbonation here. Medium carb keeps things very light and crisp, which is shocking considering the ABV. That 8.5% is incredibly well hidden.
O - Pretty good brew here. Really interesting callaboration here. Some super impressive head here kinda wish I had tried this fresh though, think it lost alot of its hop characteristics.

Shared with gwuilliums. Poured from 750ml bottle into tulips.
A: Dark yellow/brass color. Slightly hazy. Excellent head formation and retention. Good carbonation. Some lacing.
S: Wow!! Spicy and woody and hoppy. Has some banana and citrus, maybe. What a complex nose.
T: Even better than the nose. Spicy and fruity and just ever-so-slightly funky. Really complex. There is more bitterness than the nose hints at, so this ends up being a very balanced beer.
M: Medium body, slightly dry finish. Excellent carbonation persists. Very nice.
O: I bought it because it was on sale. I went back and bought two more because it is a fabulous beer!

07 Hopfen-Weisse on tap at the Gate for the Brooklyn evening. Had remembered hearing good things about this beer, so I made it my first stop. An almost clear dark yellow pour with a little bit of haze. Very sexy looking. Smells of sweet wheat, clove, and a bit of background citrus. Really nice. I suppose the banana had faded all out of it, which meant my lady actually got to enjoy it.
Flavor started out with a little bitterness and a burst of bright sweet wheat with a bit of lemon, followed by a wave of clove and a little pine and orange hop flavor. It was really well-integrated, smooth, very easy drinking and enjoyable. Excellent work all around.

I was very excited to try out this collaboration and boy I was pleasantly surprised by my friend who ended up giving me this bottle for my birthday.
I really enjoy Aventinus, which is currently my favorite sipping beer so having enjoyed Brooklyn's various offerings I was excited to try this one out.
The color is a nice semi-solid gold with a nice color to it. The taste was on point and very easy and enjoyable to savor. I have been fortunate to find about five more bottles at all places a local downtown liquor store...who knew? I usually don't see liquor stores carry a wide variety and decent selection of beers in my area but this one definitely did and I pretty much wiped them out of this beer.
Not to be missed!

A: Pours a slightly hazy gold with loads of visible carbonation. The head is white, airy- almost pillow like- that last till the final drop leaving behind great lacing.
S: A nice strong nose of yeast, wheat, hops, spices, tropical fruits, and a hint of booze. There's a bit of hops as well and perhaps slight hint of honey sweetness.
T: The nose is a bit larger then the taste, but still very good. A soft palate of banana, lemon zest, spices (pepper & clove), grains, tropical fruits, & citrus. There is also a mild malt background that hold it all together.
M: Light body with high carbonation.
D: Great beer that easy to drink. Light enough mouthfeel and nice enough flavor makes me wish I bought more then 1 bottle.

I was very excited when I saw this beer. I saw that it was a new Brooklyn, a special one, and when I gave it a closer inspection, my taste buds trembled, my mouth watered, and my stomach growled. Why? Because I've had "hybrid" beers before, beers that mix two distinct styles. The first hybrid I had was from Midnight Sun Brewing Company up in Anchorage, AK, an amazing, outstanding, extraordinary, etc. brewery. Their hybrid was their Obliterator IV, an IPA-Hefeweizen. It was one of the best beers I've ever had. And when I picked up this Hopfen-Weisse, a hoppy-white/wheat beer, I knew it would at least be similar to the Obliterator IV. This was enough of a reason to get it! Anyway, let's get to the review.
I loved pouring this out of the bottle. Since it is partly a weiss beer, I put the bottle up to the light, and sure enough, I saw sediment. YES! I poured out about a 3/4 glass and then twirled the bottle a bit to stir up some of that non-filtered goodness to then fill up the rest of the beer glass. The head bloomed very large and looks very appetizing, being very bubbly yet clings to the glass. Indeed, the head is like a hefeweizen but an IPA too. Very bubbly but frothy enough to retain its form, at least for a bit until the bubbles pop. When you first take in the aroma of the Hopfen-Weisse, it smells like a pale ale. It's hoppy and smells faintly of flowers. On the other hand, the citrus and yeasty/wheaty smells lie tucked underneath the hops. As far as aesthetics, this beer is a clear golden, unless you swirl the sediment like I did that adds particulates.
Now to taste. This is why I like the hybrids (I own a hybrid car :P)! Unlike the smell, where the pale ale came before the hefeweizen, with taste the latter came before the former. It starts out with a strong wheat taste but with subtle underlying bitterness of hops. Lemony-orange citrus tang floats around in there as well. Talk about having complexity in a beer's taste. Wheat, hops, and citrus. One thing I really like about this beer is how the hefeweizen flavor stays throughout while the hop spice-zest stays right along with it. This is a full-flavored beer but isn't heavy. I love the spiciness at the end.
If you're a fan of hybrid beers, complex-tasting beers, hefeweizens and/or pale ales, this is definitely a beer to try. I don't think it's a great beer, but it's certainly extraordinary and something you should certainly pick up if you see it. Good stuff!
