Pours a copper color with very active carbonation and a resilient head. Smells malty/grainy with a subdued Belgian yeast character. Tastes very malty: bread and honey. Mild noble hop finish. Yeast character is pretty restrained. A bit sweet but dries up in the finish. Kind of reminds me of a blonde biere de garde. Alcohol strength is well-hidden. Mouthfeel is very fluffy and frothy. Prickly carbonation goes well to keep this refreshing in spite of the high alcohol. I found this at half-price as my grocery store was trying to get rid of them. Good buy for the money, but I don't know if I'd pay $10 for this at regular price.

Date code of 3551, so bottled late December 2011. Sampled 5/8/13

A: Pours a straw yellow color with a massive head that lasts for a while. Eventually settles down to a decently thick collar of foam

S: Lightly fruity and spicy Belgian yeast along with a hint of barnyard and alcohol

T: Starts off quite fruity with a hint of spiciness. Goes into some barnyard, estery alcohol, and earthy hops. Finishes lightly bitter and phenolic

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Lightly dry

O: A very nice BSPA with quite the kick. Very complex, with many layers. A great bottle to split at dinner in lieu of wine, and probably one that suits most people including wine fanatics. Definitely recommended

750ml, bottled in January 2012.

Slightly hazy golden color, two finger head after a careful pour. The creamy foam shows good persistence and leaves sheets of lacing behind. Not very effusive on the nose, but there are aromas of yeast, champagne, pear. These are all well-integrated into a lightly yeasty, fruity character.

Somewhat dry with a champagne-like taste overall, some character from the yeast as well. Finishes dry as well, but I pick up maybe a little bit of sweetness from that Mauritius sugar midpalate. Alcohol character is well restrained, showing up only right before the finish. Fruity esters impart notes of white grape and pear. Carbonation is very fine and contributes to a slick, almost silky mouthfeel. Impressive for a highly carbonated, bottle-refermented beer.

Overall, I think this is right up there with the top strong Belgian pales. At under $10 a bottle, it's a good buy, too. Highly recommended.

Poured into a goblet out of a 750ml bottle.

Pours a moderately hazy dark yellow with a very frothy two finger head. The bottle conditioning produces tons of carbonation that keeps that head intact most of the way through the glass. Quite impressive.

The aroma is a wonderful bouquet of citrus and Belgian yeast. A very musty smell with grapes and peaches along with some subtle hints of clove and allspice. There are some floral notes as well and it is all very nice.

The flavor is even nicer than the aroma. Lots of grape and more mustiness along with the same pear that was present in the aroma. A little bit of metal although it really doesn't detract from the overall experience. Some spice reminiscent of cinnamon combined with clove and even a quick shot of chocolate. Mouthfeel is silky smooth thanks to the carbonation with an extremely dry finish. Alcohol is completely hidden providing just a subtle warming in the chest.

Overall, a fine example of a Belgian Strong Pale Ale and one of the best American ones out there. This, IMO, could stand toe to toe with anything coming out of Belgium and is quite a bit better than many that do. A great beer at a really good price.

Poured from a 750 ml corked bottle into a Duvel tulip glass. Bottle date code of 1782b.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Huge five finger white head that settles into a creamy patchy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing clinging around the glass.

Smell: A spicy, yeasty driven Belgian aroma with lots of citrus fruit esters. Belgian yeast upfront with big hints of barnyard funk, clove, and white pepper spicing. Hints of banana, pear, and green apples. Big hints of citrus orange, lemon zest, tangerine, apricot, and mango. Also some wine like hints of white grape. Sweet Belgian candied sugars. Soft bready malts with hints of wheat grains, biscuit, and cracker. Also some herbal and floral hop hints in the mix as well. A nicely complex and zesty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, yeasty and spicy with lots of zesty fruit esters. Big profile of Belgian yeast with notes of barnyard funk, cloves, and white peppers. Sweet candied Belgian sugar. Fruit notes of banana, green apples, and pear along with some white grapes. Big citrus fruit taste with notes of oranges, lemon zest, apricot, tangerine, and mango. Bready malt backing with notes of biscuit, wheat grains, hay, and cracker. Earthy hops with floral and herbal notes towards the finish. A very good Belgian style taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with a medium to high level of carbonation. Crisp, spicy, juicy, and somewhat prickly. Very drying finish. Alcohol heat is masked well.

Overall: A very good Belgian style ale. Good zesty fruit flavors with a good amount of funk and grainy malt.

One of two souvenirs brought back from a recent trip to New York. I bought it from Good Beer NYC.

Pours bright gold with thick, foamy white head three fingers thick that lasted quite a while. The aroma consists of the familiar Belgian yeastiness, along with fruit and a hint of sweetness. Upon tasting I was surprised to find it light and crisp - more so than most Belgians I'm used to, but fitting the appearance and aroma. I found it to also have a lightly sweet character with no real hop character. The beer had a light body matching the aroma and taste. Finishes dry but not too dry with noticeable alcohol.

Overall this is a very refreshing Belgian that is surprisingly strong. Not overly complex, but very solid.

This year's Easter day beer...

A - A mammoth four plus fingers worth of air fluffy crisp off white head with a slight lemony colored tinge and comprised of oodles of big chunky bubbles... Excellent retention ultimately gives way to full veil of mostly thick lacing... Stellar carbonation... Loaded with micro-bubbled moderated paced carbonation rising throughout... The color is a lively golden amber... Really a beautiful beer...

S - Bright citrus notes in the form of lemon zest and sweet oranges... Belgian yeast... Sweet golden raisins... A very light spiciness... Wonderful balance and complexity... Each whiff reveals a new and enticing dimension...

T - Lots of grassy notes to start... Lemon zest... Belgian yeast... Sweet golden raisins and white grapes... A light kiss of sweet citrus... A bright mix of lemon zest and Belgian yeast dominate the finish and linger for quite a while in a very appealing manner...

M - On the lighter side of medium bodied... Limited prickly carbonation... Mostly dry throughout... Perhaps even a bit thin... Not bad by any means, but a bit of a let down when compared to the other facets of this fine brew...

D - An exceptional Belgian Strong Pale Ale... Other then a mouthfeel that only rises to the level of very good, everything else about this brew is excellent... One of the best American Interruptions of the style I've encountered... I can highly recommend and attest that I'll be indulging in this fine Brooklyn offering in the future...

One of the "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" -- #19 of the ones I've reviewed here.

A remarkable beer, one of the better American attempts at doing a Belgian strong golden ale. Pour looks just about right to me, golden with a fluffy head that puts up the good fight before it finally succumbs. I can never describe the nose of a Belgian strong ale just right, they always smell to me more or less like "themselves", but maybe you might call it a combination of hops, a certain kind of fruity yeast, and a mild "winey" scent -- supercharge and enrich the nose of Pabst Blue Ribbon and you're starting to get there. Mouthfeel is light, like I think this style should be, and effervescent. Flavors of a musty kind of hops which slowly finishes to a longer, more intense version of the same thing.

I really liked this. I think this is the kind of style that's hard to do well, and even when it's done well is only ever going to hit a certain level (I described above the basics of every Belgian Strong Ale I've ever tried, some of them do the job better, of course, but it never really departs too much from that blueprint). That said, this is a very persuasive attempt.

It's gold, it carries a solid finger of whites and a brilliant clarity. Smells of carbonation, belgian yeast, some sweet grain, some earthy hops, and a touch of household dust. Flavor is grain, sweetness, some hints of flowers and a bit of corn alongside a dose of belgian pale yeast. Body is thin on medium with hi carb and a bone dry finish. I have to drink water every time I taste the beer - that's just too much. Another beer from Brooklyn, another strikeout - particulary because the mouthfeel is just soo much to overcome.

For a high ABV this beer has great taste and finish. I had it at Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza in Miami with my salad and pizza pie. It was a great compliment to a good meal. Also, the price was excellent. Figure you get 3 glasses of beer versus ordering 3 beers. It is a great value.

A high, fluffy head floats atop a pale, yellow-amber, clear elixir. The nose is more floral than fruity. The beer's physical character is an accomplished balance of thirst-quenching prickliness and foamy smoothness. Taste? Apricots. It has to be classed as sweet, but completely free of cloyingness. The beer is refreshing but substantial. It's lighter, I suppose, than the estimable Maredsous Tripel, with which it shares stature, but in a good way. Put me down as a fan. Quite good.

Appearance (3.75)- Pours a slightly hazy pale golden color. Nice sized fizzy white head that dissipates quite quickly while leaving some spotty lacing behind.

Smell (3.75)- Very yeasty. Sweet. Slight alcohol presence... almost smells like some sort of an adult apple juice.

Taste (4)- Again, belgian yeast is prominent. Sweet with a fairly strong tart finish. "Classified as a strong Saison by Garrett Oliver" but I think it tastes more along the lines of a Tripel. Abv is more noticeable in the taste than in the nose too.

Mouthfeel (3.5)- High level of carbonation. Slightly dry finish. Slight alcohol sting.

Overall (3.5)- Not a bad beer but not one of my favorite interpretations of the style. I cant say I didnt enjoy it but if Im gonna be spending that kind of money on a beer I probably won't be revisiting this one.

750ml bottle served in a St. Bernardus snifter.
Plenty of pressure is apparent when removing the cork, but the bottle was well behaved (no faoming), as was the clearly effervescent pour which raised a well proportioned head. The head had good retention and left excellent lacing. The beer is a hazy, light honey hue. An exceptionally appealing looking brew.

Aroma: fine fruity and floral layers with spicy yeast notes in the background. Nicely complex smell that has less banana and clove than the stereotypical Belgian pale ale. Hints of pear and other fruits mix with bready notes from the malts.

Flavor: Excellent sweet/bitter balance with a light tartness in the finish. Some yeast spiciness and herbal hops in the background. Hints of citrus peels, tropical fruits, banana, white pepper and biscuits in an exceptionally well-crafted mix.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied with ample soft effervescent carbonation. ABV partly hidden, although there is a very light burn on my sensitive tongue, and some warming after swallowing. Perfect dryness in the finish.

O: All aspectws of this beer come together to create a really superb ale. Drinkability is exceptional, and I was happy to have this 750ml bottle to myself. ... and happy to have bought a few more at the same time to share with others at a later date.

Poured from bottle into snifter glass

Appearance- The beer pours a lightly hazed orange golden color with a one finger just off white head. The head fades slowly leaving a nice level of lacing

Smell-The aroma is heaviest of some citrus smells of lemon and orange mixed with clove and a light banana smell. With these aromas are also some moderate lighter fruit smells of pear and apple as well as some hints of a yeasty aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with a bready and citrus flavor. The citrus is mainly orange in taste but there are hints of lemon mixed with it. Other fruit flavors of a more tropical nature (banana, mango, papaya) are upfront as well. The yeast and spice flavors come more toward the middle of the taste. The sweet dwindles a bit as this occurs with the some light, more funk like flavors coming to the tongue. These tastes take the taste to its end where they mix with an increase in the clove and more breadiness to leave a decently fruity and spiced flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel-The body of the beer was rather average to above average in its creaminess and thickness with the carbonation level being a little on the higher side. The thickness was rather nice for the more bready nature of the brew, while the higher carbonation suited the fruit and spice nicely. A good blend for the flavors.

Overall- A rather nice drinking Belgian style strong ale. It had a good flavor profile and transitions with it even at 9% abv being very easy to drink. A quite nice beer to sit back and enjoy.

I opened this bottle and poured it into a tulip style glass. There was plentiful foam from the initial pour. Unfortunately, the foam was not sticky enough to leave any lacing on the glass. I gave extra credit for the pretty, golden coloring of this beer.

Off the top this smells like a very good belgian. You get the bubblegum and a little bit of sour smell. I also like the grainy presence.

The flavor clicks very well. I like the way it resides in the mouth. You can definitely get very enjoyable, clean flavor.

I recommend this belgian for a warm summer evening. Props go out to Brooklyn Brewery on this one.

A-Pours a hazy dark yellow with a very thick white head that could last for days.

S-Spicy, slightly herbal, with some Belgian yeast

T-Belgian yeast and sugar, slight hint of spice and a hint of hops. Very delicious and lots of flavor for the style.

M-Thick and crisp with a nice amount of carbonation.

D-Very drinkable even though its got a high abv.

Overall, this is a very good beer, but what else would you expect from Brooklyn. A great version of the style and I hope to drink it again.

Bottled March 20, 2011. cellared as appropriate.

appearance: Deep gold color. Big billowy white head that lasts and laces very nicely. Bit of chill haze that fades quickly.

smell: Lemony floral aromatics, and bright alluvial and slightly peppery hop characters. Clean malty sweetness.

taste: Everything the aroma promises. Horsey peppery funk (late Brett B?). Well balanced clean malt backbone.

mouthfeel: Medium or just under medium. Full carbonation supports a nice fluffy feel. Slightly astringent in the finish. Long an pleasant finish with all the characters of the taste and aroma represented.

overall: Very well done Belgian Golden Strong (or Strong Pale as BA classes it). Straddles the old world characters of a Golden Strong, Tripel, with the bit of Brett funk. 18 months put som dryness and funk into it that I really like, and can imagine a couple more years would just bring out more complexity.

Damn fine!

this beer is unreal, and a steal for under 9 bucks. the pour is a little hazy, sunny yellow, with over an inch of thick white head that lasts the whole glass and leaves a fine lacing. the nose is a little saisony, lots of belgian yeast, and not as sweet as i would have thought with the sugar listed. theres something grassy and outdoorsy about this, lovely. the flavor reminds me a lot of the sorachi ace, but with some different hops. its got the same champaigney yeast vibe and belgian essence. balanced as anything, not too sugary, not too hoppy, just a near perfect golden ale with a little summer thrown in. this brings me somewhere far away from my upstate new york kitchen in december. effervescent carbonation and a light but not watery body. creamy feel in the mouth, invisible alcohol. this blew my mind, and is up there with sorachi ace as some of brooklyns best work. i cant wait to get this again, the culinary matchings are endless as well. what a quality brew!

A: Pours a faintly hazy orange-yellow color with some big bubbles of carbonation initially visible. The head is very tall, foamy, and white. Retention is solid, leaving a rocky cap on the beer after a few minutes and some irregular patches of lacing on the glass.

S: Fragrant yeast character. Fruity notes of orchard and more exotic varieties, including some mild banana and lemony citrus. Some spiciness of clove. A bit of grainy maltiness and lurking alcohol is present as well.

T: Thoroughly yeasty. Some mild grainy and doughy sweetness up front is quickly swallowed by yeasty funk and tartness. Fruit flavors are prominent, with golden apple, pear, banana, lemon, and some faint candied pineapple available. Yeasty spice adds a nice background of cloves and phenols without becoming a focal point. Hop bitterness is low but does pop up a little in the finish, along with a mostly hidden alcoholic bite.

M: Moderate body for the style. Carbonation is lively and assertive. Finishing mouthfeel is dry, which isn't unexpected. Alcohol is concealed well but at 9% still mildly noticeable.

O: This is a nice take on a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. It has a very complex, vaguely German yeast character - almost like a weizenbock in many respects - coupled with a big, dry, fruity Belgian backbone. Drinkable and enjoyable.

M: medium with nothing harsh on the tongue. It leaves a dry finish and a crisp sweet aftertaste. Though the ABV is fairly high, the drinkability is pretty good. I have no problem being able to finish off the rest of this bomber within a session.

Clove, banana, lemony citrus in nose, distinct spice notes, chalky, estery ripe fruit, mildly sweet grains

Bottle date code 1951 on back of 750ml bottle. Bottle poured into a tulip.

A- Pours a hazy muted dark golden straw color with 3 fingers of thick bubbly bright white head that hangs around quite a while and leaves some nice lacing on the glass.

S- Fruity, getting a faint banana / clove aroma. A little bit of funk, mixed with some strong, spicy Belgian yeast. The fruits seem to turn tropical as it warms in the glass.

T- Starts off huge and malty. Lots of sweetened, sugary, malt. Almost bready, biscuity, or doughy flavors follow. Theres that banana / clove flavor thats in the aroma. Hmmm, Interesting. Theres plenty of spicy Belgian yeast to go around here. A tasty treat.

M- A very creamy mouthfeel on the high side of medium body. This one has a lively amount of carbonation that prickles the tongue a little bit. The 9% ABV is EXTREMELY well hidden, I do not even begin to smell / taste any trace of it.

O- This one is tasty. It's a nice different take on a Belgian Pale Ale, or Strong Belgian Pale Ale which ever you want to call it. It really is hard to call this a strong one considering the way the 9% ABV is hidden. I like the sweetness mixed with the mild funk, and the added bonus of the wheat banana aroma / flavor. Hats off to Brooklyn.

750mL bottle poured into a Duvel tulip glass. Batch stamp on bottle was 3141. No other date.

Appearance: Translucent/cloudy orange-copper color. Thick and persistent 1/8" thick dense off-white foam. Plenty of strands of lacing in strands noted. Good looking beer.

Smell: Fruity - with some definite tropical fruit smells in here (I noted papaya). Demerara sugar noted as well, along with a hint of orange citrus.

Taste: Wonderful blend of fruit and malt up front, some citrus in the middle, and some hop bitterness mixed in with a demerara sugar flavor at the end. Very tasty

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, spicy on the tongue, nice thickness underneath the carbonation. Just the barest hint of stickiness on the teeth.

Overall / Drinkability: A very rich, tasty, and well balanced beer here, full of Belgian goodness and many nice flavors. The alcohol is not notable at first, but it shows up in force later. While you should sip and savor it has that great pull of flavor that can lead one to drink it faster than you should. So while I know for me it should be one is enough....I am quite glad I had a big Duvel-sized glass of this when I split the bottle with the Mrs. A dangerously drinkable beer, but a very good one overall.

Poured from a corked and caged bottle into a Duvel tulip

A- pours a cloudy yellow with a three finger white head that fades moderately quick, with tons of lacing up the glass. A little cloudy for a saison IMO

S- the aroma comes off as a little stale to me actually....light bit of funk, with a lot of some weak banana type scents as well

T- lots of Belgian yeast coming through, very fruity and flowery and choking the hell out of me. That's all I can really taste, and it's not a very pleasant experience.
