On cask at Bull and Bear as part of Syracuse Beer Week. Pale golden color with small carbonation bubbles forming a frothy cap. Moderate lacing. Refreshingly hoppy aroma though not over the top, maybe dry hopped. Taste is very smooth with a nice balance between hop bitterness and malt backbone. Proper amount of cask carbonation as this was freshly tapped and still at a decently cold cellar temperature. Highly drinkable, recommend seeking this one out on cask.

On cask at Mahars.

A: A touch darker than the normal version. A medium copper color with those nice cask bubbles. A touch of lacing.

S: Much hoppier than the bottled or draft version. While I was drinking it I thought that it was dry hopped.

T: Much better than any other version of this beer I have had. It was really bitter. Tons of other flavors though. Nice malt backbone.

M: Very delicate cask carbonation.

D: By far the best version of this beer I have ever had. If they did something different to the cask version they should do it all the time.

Had on cask at Bukowski's in Boston.

Pours a light golden color with slight amber hues. A nice white fluffy head appears and nicely laces the glass for what seemed like forever. Aromas are of citrus and floral hops, with a nice malt background. Initially this beer hits quite sweet with citrusy hops leading the way, but they definetly are not as pronounced as the bottle version of this beer. All sorts of malts show up after the initial hop burst, showing off some nice biscuity, dough, and bread like flavors. There's also a slight sweet caramel that fits in nicely to the picture. This beer finishes with a zinging hop bitterness and an oily almost juicy aftertaste that just sticks on the tongue. This beer is light bodied but super creamy and super smooth from the conditioning of the cask. Overall I like this beer way way better on cask than in the bottle, maybe this is the proper way that this beer should be served..

Had this off the hand pump and wow what a different beer. Pours a nice golden colour with a small creamy head that fades into what looks to be a science experiment on top of the beer. Smell is a bit buttery with just a slight wiff of floral hops. Taste is a bit of butterschotch. I dont know if the cask was a bit past its prime, but there were no real hops to talk about. Well, there were enough to dry out the finish, but not enough to pucker your mouth. The mouthfeel is nice and creamy smooth. Drinkability was very high. I could have sucked these back all night. If not for the hop fade this would have gotten higher marks.

Served from the cask at d.b.a.'s in NYC. Cask was tapped the day before. Standard pint glass.

Appearance: A clear honey colored topped off with a decent 1/2" of nice frothy bubbles.

Smell: Nice floral and piney aromatic hops that were detectable from about 2 feet away. Slight malt presence on the nose.

Taste: Sweet malt flavor at the onset followed by a modestly powerful hoppiness. Not overwhelming to the point of making a hophead jump for joy, but still pretty strong for the style. Slightly bitter and salty on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Slight puckering and drying sensation. Light to medium bodied.

Drinkability: Quite drinkable for the style. A very good example of an IPA. I'll be looking for the non-cask conditioned version around my area.

Pours a clear more orange than amber color with a one finger off white head. Once the head dissipates it really doesn't look as special.

Smells of brown bread with a touch of honey and some herbal hop notes.

Taste is of a spicy nutty malt note with that earthy peppery herbal dry hop bitterness leading the charge. There's a malt sweetness in there that helps out the herbal slightly piney hop notes.

Mouthfeel is fairly sharp yet dry. It definitely makes me want to take another sip immediately.

Overall, this does remind me of some english ipa's as far as the malts notes go. There's a little bit of fighting for taste between the hop and malts. But a nice and distinct ipa that I would try again for sure.

A: Almost clear dark copper/orange color. Small white head.
S: Sweet malts (caramel and some spiciness) mixed with some piney/floral hops. A bit of citrus.
T: Sweet honey flavor at first. Some spiciness comes into play as you drink more, followed by caramel and biscuit. This spiciness is strange, I can't say I love it. Orange and pine bitterness to finish it off nicely though.
M: Medium bodied with low carbonation. Moderate, but pleasant bitterness.
O: This is a solid English IPA. Generally not my favorites but this one has a nice touch.

A: Pours a amber honey color a little cloudy with a white head that dissipates in a couple seconds leaving a lace on the glass.

S: A sweet floral with hop aroma spread in the air when the bottle is opened, delightful.

T: A floral refreshing flavour that become bitter in the end. Despite its bitterness Brooklyn East IPA cannot be compared with other IPAS, especially another US IPA, because its hops aren't so extremes as expected of american IPAS, that said, this beer have a very good flavor in my opinion.

M: While not so strong in bitterness as other IPAS, this beer still leaves a bitter feel on the mouth, with some freshness of its malts and carbonation.

O: A great beer, but not so extreme as some would expecting, still a great experience that deserve one shot!

A: light copper, thin off white head. Moderate retention. Moderate lacing.
S: light hop aroma. Floral, grassy. Malt aroma. Lots of Bready malts.
T: balanced bitterness, balanced hop flavors of grass, a little herbal, a little spice. Great malt backbone here. Bready, malt deliciousness. But really well balanced.
M: crisp, dry, it's a deceiving medium body. Light to moderate carbonation (not a bitter level carbonation, but not too heavy either).

Ive had this beer possibly hundreds of times In the last 15 years and never thought mich of it. I'm brewing an English ipa this week and have been "researching". I had Low expectations based on other reviews and my own history, but I think this has changed my mind. It's a great English ipa, not west coast and if that is what you look for you will be disappointed.

Clear light amber in the Duvel tulip. An average head but very spritzy on the tongue. Light bodied. Not much fragrance, and an earthy nose.

Warm and hoppy at the same time. Some of the fruity English style of hopping, but more bitter than you'd expect. A hint of orange flavor with some woodiness, maybe a touch of dried apricot, and a quinine bitterness. Drinkable enough if you like the English Bitter style, though not as aromatic as I would hope for. The bitter aftertaste becomes more pronounced after some sipping. From the 12 oz bottle in a seasonal 12 pack from the supermarket.

Poured from a can dated September 2012 into a pilsener glass

Appearance - hazy tangerine color with white head and particulates floating in the liquid

Smell - Pineapple, mango, orange, lemon

Taste - citrus and pine upfront, caramel, orange rind

mouthfeel - medium bodied, low carbonation, bitterness is moderate upfront and on the finish

Overall - this can was a bit beyond its prime, but based on what I drank, this was a refreshing, easy drinking beer. I'd like to revisit a fresh can/bottle of this.

Recently, there has been a large influx of Brooklyn Beers to France and so far, it's been very well received and quite frankly is rad for me as an expat.

While living in the US, I never gave this beer much thought/credit, I always went for Brooklyn Lager given the choice; now, I'm gonna have to go with the Ipa.

It's much more aromatic and hoppy than I remember, with the bitterness as well as alcohol being very subdued for it's strength. It could be that I am just on a bit of an English ale kick right now, not really sure.

While I do consider it somewhere between the two (British side being the malts and majority of hops) and the (American Side being the Centennial dry-hopping and higher abv) I hope everyone is judging this beer more on the side of British IPA than American IPA.

Pours slightly cloudy, with a color like orange pekoe tea. Average head retention and lacing. It's identifiable as an English style IPA immediately upon first smell, malty with perhaps with a little bit more hops than normal. The first taste is hoppy as is expected, with notes of licorice. Nice bitter hops aftertaste. Below average carbonation, which I find to be pleasant.

Overall a very nice representative of the style!

Pours a nice golden honey color with a lingering fluffy white head. Nice lacing on the glass as you drink.

The smell hits you right away. What is that? I'm saying it's pear. Nice, anyway, and unexpected for an American IPA. Oh, no wonder. It's categorized as an English IPA.

More of that pear flavor on the tongue, but not quite as tasty as the aroma. Still, this is a very nice beer.

Mouthfeel is average. Aftertaste is average.

I'll choose this over many others if its available.

Brooklyn Brewery - Brooklyn East India Pale Ale - 12fl oz bottle

Look - Pours copper with an amber hue. Small bubbly head that fades fast. Good lacing. Minimal carbonation.

Smell - Sweet malt and hops, honey overtones or something sweet about the malts that resembles honey.

Taste - Snappy bitter malt and hops, almost like honey.

Mouthfeel - Hops rest gently on the sides. Light but bitter, decent drinkability.

Overall - Decent but not amazing. Somewhat one-dimensional (sorry for cliche but it's true). This brew was on my bucket list so I gave it a shot, would recommend but not rave about.

a: A nice pour with a nice light head that lasted roughly 2 minutes before dissipating. Color is a copper amber color that is clear however not transparent. All of the features that I would expect out of an India Pale Ale.

s: Smell is a nice hoppy peach. Great scent that is powerful enough to engulf the nostrils while drinking.

t: Taste was less impressive than the features thus far. A nice hop flavor enters the mouth however little of the Citrix notes come through. My personal opinion is those notes really allow me to take in the bitterness however I did not get those flavors as much as I would have liked too. Please note that it was not 'bad' but rather not where my palate wanted it to be based on the smell that was paired with it.

m: Light, not as heavy as I was expecting. Bitterness lasts through each sip however I seek out "the tingles" when I drink an IPA. "The Tingles" is the feeling your mouth experiences when a solid, heavy, full flavor IPA rushes your mouth and the flavor makes your mouth almost feel like it's tingling.

o: Overall this East IPA gets a lower mark than what it stated with. Taste and mouthfeel are most important to me and those two traits were lacking against my palate. For someone that enjoys hoppines without the interference of additional flavors would enjoy this IPA

It comes in a cloudy amber color. Great nose for IPA with pine and fruity hops.

There's a bit of a citrus and hop in the front and then it comes with a bit of pin. It's extremely drinkable and reminded a bit of an American IPA, but still with the huge maltiness of English styles. The balance of this beer is what stands out with its maltiness.

Overall, I'm extremely surprised. I generally don't like Brooklyn Brewery's beers, but this one stands out for me along with the Double Chocolate stout. I would recommend getting it fresh because the hops disappear super fast. This is a wholly different beer when fresh and not. When it isn't, it gets mild and boring with flat malt flavors.

Brooklyn East India Pale Ale - has an interesting name as it implies both: a) there is such thing as "West India Pale Ale", and b) that a brew made in Brooklyn USA is made to be shipped to Kolkata India. What's in a name? That which we call a beer, By any other name would taste as sweet. Let's see how this one tastes then.

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: A slightly foggy amber body with a cappuccino foam white head on top.

S: Fresh pine and citrus hops led the nose on a journey to the Brooklyn brewery, this is followed on by hints of toasted malt, stone-fruit and spring water. The aroma is quite fresh with a sharp acidic note, very inviting.

T: That sharp citric bitterness is upfront, it doesn't overpower the beer but it makes a definite first impression. After which we have a solid toasted grain base, pine hops, bitter lemon, buttery diacetyl, pepper and a dash of cardamom. Then it finishes with that same bitter note from the beginning, less prominent though. All in all a decent IPA, though for American tastes it wont be hoppy enough, I like it - sharp, fresh and bitter flavours combine well together and this brew proves it.

M: Hop oil adds slickness to a mid to light bodied and light carbonated brew.

D: Pretty decent IPA in my opinion. Price-wise I know we are getting ripped off here in Australia and I damn the import tax for this, but otherwise I like and would drink a decent quantity of this beer if it was cheaper, money is the only thing that holds this back from my fridge.

Food match: For a brew as fresh and bitter as this a salad would go great, perhaps Greek salad, or a grilled chicken and rocket salad would work best. It is a fairly balanced beer so quite a lot of cuisines would work - actually a Pad Thai would kill it with this brew.

Pours a burnished amber colour, nice red tinge to it. Head is off-white, lovely, tight and clingy. Great retention. Looks great, like an IPA should.

Smells a little caramelly with hoppy overtones giving tangy lemon, grapefruit, lychee and some white pepper. Pleasant; not overly bitter.

Taste has significantly more malt. Caramel and toffee from the get-go starts to taste a little roasty towards the back, blending with bitter hop oils. Bit biscuity later, with spicy notes as well - pepper, cardamom and a touch of juniper. Slight Burtonised character, but nicely mellow with a very decent malt backing. This is just how I want an English IPA to be, and so few of them actually are.

Fluid mouthfeel ; a little bit drying from the hop oils. Not much carbonation; not bad.

Nice IPA, with good balance and pleasant flavours.

An orange can! for a golden orange English IPA. Poured into a .5 L cylinder.

Brooklyn Brewery logo (but truth is it's made upstate in Utica... bet Brooklyn actually has better Adironack water and less fracking).
Just a reminder - Cans:
1) Better for the earth are infinitely recyclable.
2) Store & transport smaller!
3) Less energy and greener.
4) Less light degradation and I cannot tell the diff and I bet you cant either!

Appearance: More golden-amber, than orange. Pours a big head but settles to a thin white head. Cloudy not clear. Low carbonation.

Smell: Best part. Great with spicy food. Loads of spice, mint, hop aromas, with a sweetness and complimentary to spicy food. Lasting and evolving aroma.

Taste: very original hop flavor. Great with food, less good stand alone.

Feel: Low cards, medium body, lots of tongue tingle (almost too much without food to counter).

Trying for the replication of true ENGLISH long-haul IPA style. Not an American style. Since it's called East India, apt for Indian, Asian, African, Caribbean, and south hemisphere food.

I really go back and forth with this one. Scratch my head when without food, totally enjoy with spicy food. so there you have it.

IN a variety pack that I bought at Wegmans in King of Prussia (variety 6 pack)
I had very high expectations for this IPA based on word-of-mouth.

Golden appearance with some haziness.
Scent is sweeter than I expected, more citrus and fruitiness than I thought would be present.
This translated directly to the flavor.
It's almost as if the caramel/floral malts superseded the hoppiness that you expect in an IPA.
Almost minimal dryness.
No bite whatsoever.

If I was just looking for a basic American Pale ale or even borderline pilsner this wouldn't be a bad effort, but it's not where it needs to be as an IPA.

Not awful, just needs some improvement in the dry hopping procedures.

Appearance: Orange-gold appearance with very little head.

Aroma: Honey and caramel aromas with a fruity, peachy nose.

Flavor: A sweet, honey, molasses flavor is well balanced by citrus and faint pine hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with initial sweet cloying that is swept away by the hop slightly bitter finish with a good linger

Overall, this beer is refreshing, but it's sweetness might be disturbing to some drinkers. However, I find it a great change of pace and a very enjoyable beer that I would like to try again and again.
