Bought locally (Grapevine refrigerated shelves), a few days in my fridge, reviewed 45F-55F.

I poured a big, cream-colored head that left some good solid lacing. The beer is a clear, amber color. Nice.

The smell is lagery, caramel malty. The front is sweet and malty with a light caramel middle. The finish is lightly hoppy dry, with some grains, turning nutty in the aftertaste. Some metal in the aftertaste too. This is a good, simple, darkish lager.

Picked this up a month or so ago at the Fairway on 6 Ave in New York City, having never had a beer from New Amsterdam before. The label looked different than the one shown here and the bottles were quite dusty as well, making me wonder exactly how long this had been retired for. Thankfully, this did not taste old or skunked and it went down relatively easy even if it wasn't quite like other examples of this style that I've had before!

Good pour to this as the beer had a nice nutty hue, thick tan head, and moderate carbonation to it. The lacing that was left behind was nice and solid as some of the head stuck around until the way end. Not a strong aroma to it but there was plenty of caramel and Golding hops in the nose with even more of those in the taste. Sticky and somewhat reminiscent of an ESB, this wasn't as red or as hoppy as I was expecting it to be and it seemed to lean towards being a Brown Ale when it came to taste and mouthfeel. Sweet and herbal, this was a bit too dry for me and a bit floral in the aftertaste. Not a strong hop "burn" here as this had quite a British feel to it from start to finish.

No alcohol was listed on here or on the bottle but it wasn't something that I could easily notice as I worked my way through this. While not a bad beer, there wasn't anything outstanding about this and it was a bit of an aberration stylistically. For a go-to beer after a long day, this would be fine but there are so many better examples of this style available that this wouldn't be my first choice. Just a bit too mellow for me!

Poured from 12oz brown bottle into a clear pint glass. No freshness date. Single purchased at Ancona's (Ridgefield, CT) for $1.85.

A: Clear red-amber with 2-finger off-white head with good retention and decent lacing.

S: Tons of toffee and caramel malty aromas blend with herbal, earthy hops that aren't too leafy

T: The flavor is all toffee malt flavor with only a bit of earthy hops as a balancing ploy. The sweetness is big but not over the top. This is a very good amber lager that approaches Maibock maltiness -- complex sweetness, little to no butteriness, and perceptible but back-row hops.

M: Feel is firmly medium-bodied with active, even carbonation. Aftertaste is malty caramel.

D: A very good amber lager that is malty and carefully crafted with tons of malting and just enough hops to keep the cavities away. Great brew.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle marked no. 4123114080148. Sampled on April 27, 2009.

A - Amber-copper with good clarity. No head or lacing really.

S - The aroma is a pretty good mix of malts and hops but nothing extraordinary.

T/M - The flavor is also a pretty even mix of malts and hops with a slightly dry finish.

I drank this a few times in the late 1980's and I seem to remember it tasting better then. It was a shame really.

Found this as part of a mix-a-six at Mo's of Fairfield - had never heard of the brewery before. Poured from a bottle, a nice reddish amber color with very little foam and limited lacing.

The caramel malt was apparent from the smell. Slightly floral/fruity as well.

Taste was a blend of the caramel malt, slightly sweet, balanced quite nicely with a hop backdrop. Progressed into a clean finish. Smooth and tasty in the mouthfeel, with moderate carbonation.

Very drinkable.

Pours a two finger cream head that fades quickly to a ring leaving no lace. Clear amber color. Hoppy nose. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Flavor has some caramel which is quickly overwhelmed by the hops, finish is typical amber - hoppy and bitter. Bottle is labeled Amber Beer Single Batch but recipe is same as New York Amber from July 2002 - two row toasted malt with cascade and Hallertauer hops. $2.00 for a 12oz bottle from Tully's Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

No date, but lists 2-row roasted barley malt, cascade and hallertauer hops. I’m a bit surprised to find this in Texas! New York City! Get a rope!
Aroma: Caramel malt base with a good spike of hops. It smells a touch too sweet.
Appearance: Nice clear copper-amber body showing strong carbonation but a short lived head, no real lace.
Flavor: Caramel taste comes in as well. The aroma is a true announcement of the taste, and again, a bit too sweet for my tastes. I’m also getting a hint of a grassy/straw/hay like flavor. Not unpleasant, just unusual with some rich tea-like tastes as well (sweetened with lemon).
Mouthfeel: Carbonation is a bit too heavy, felt fizzy and triggered an automatic burp. I’m not anti-burp, just this was a bit too much.
Overall Impression: Not a bad beer. I enjoyed it a bit more after in had sat and some of the carbonation died out. Has some classic amber flavors, but seems to fit an amber ale more than an amber lager taste (style schmyle). The heavy carbonation takes some away from the drinkability for me, but the taste is mild enough to make a session out of on a hot day.

The New Amsterdam Amber is thinner, crisper, and far less caramelish than their New York Ale, yet the beers remain very much the same. Its clear, copper body is topped by a creamy head of ivory foam that holds quite well and leaves thin splashes of lace about the glass. The nose is welcoming and offers a delicately toasted malt that's accented by some very nice, but delicate, floral and slightly perfumey hops. The body is medium-light and it's crisp on the palate with a fine, median carbonation. The flavor mirrors the aroma with a bit more emphasis on the floral hops and a firm, balancing bitterness. It finishes dry with a lingering note of toasty malt and some background floral hops.

Pours a slightly reddish amber color with a creamy white head that quickly fades into a thin lace. Nose is lightly toasted malts with a touch of floral hops. Light to moderate in body and quite smooth. Taste is sweet toasted malts and grains with some notes of caramel followed by some papery hops and a bit of citrus. A decent representation of the style and worth a try, but there’s nothing special about this brew.

Appearance: Crystal-clear reddish golden color with a half-inch off-white head, which retains fairly well. Moderate streams of carbonation and good lacing, overall, a quite pleasing appearance.

Aroma: Notes of fresh bread and caramel dominate the aroma with light hops.

Taste: Begins with smooth carbonation and toasted malts, sweet caramel flavors assert themselves in the mid-taste, a lingering metallic bitterness appears near the finish.

Mouth feel: Smooth, has a slightly slick characteristic.

Drinkability/notes: A decent example of this style, worth a try.

Nice and refreshing amber style beer. The only problem is that I can only find it in Manhatten
