To brew Piñata we used four different tropical fruits to pair with plenty of new world hops. Mandarin and grapefruit peel were used in the kettle and Guava and Mango added after fermentation. The beer is dry and easy drinking with a soft tropical aromas.

On tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. Hazy yellow colour, large to moderate white head. Aroma of butterscotch, over-ripe pineapple and yellow plums. Flavour of citrus, pineapple and butterscotch (diacetyl), moderate bitterness.

Pint in North Bar, Leeds. (£5.40):
Hazy golden with a half cm, foamy white head & some lacing on the sides. Mango, citrus & lighter tropical fruits make up most of the nose, some faint floral touches & the odd pale malt too. The taste is similar, slightly more bitter & hoppy though with a lot of citrus & pine, more of the mango towards the middle with pineapple & a floral finish - more flavour than expected given the low abv. The body is medium & well carbonated, quite sharp & tangy towards the end but fairly well balanced & sessionable; surprisingly strong for a session beer too.

330ml can.
L: Opaque, dark yellow colour with a one finger head that reduces to a cap with arcs of lacing.
S: Tropical fruit emerges as the beer warms.
T: Tastes like the mango & guava pale ale stated on the can. Aftertaste is bitter & pithy.
F: Medium/light body with a mouthfeel that starts smooth but quickly turns to chalk dust.
O: Easy-drinking but ever so dry. A not very subtle tropical pale ale.

33cl can, already 18m old. Surprisingly long bb, still 4m to go.

Murky dark yellow, weak head fades rapidly.

Very intense aroma of tropical fruit, but curiously dry and thin at the same time. My nose reacts to the strength of the smell, but I do not feel like I had bitten to a juicy bit of fruit. Rather it is the afterburn of stone fruits.

Taste is similarly parchy, and the body is water-thin, leaving space for a moderate bitterness to coat the tongue, hitting above its weight in a more normal environment. Fruit burn is how this feels. Dry as a meeting memo.

Either you feel this is quenchingly drinkable, or you feel like a ghost of a fruit symphony passed by. I select the latter. What was the point...

Tasty beer. Plenty of stone fruit action and chugability, minimal bitterness and slight sweetness to the fruit. Could easily have a few of these with a bbq, very light and refreshing

CAN
Cloudy blonde with sticky white crust. 4
Light, tart mashed fruit. 3.75
Crackery malts, squeeze of grapefruit, slight resin + tropical smoothie. 3.75
Long chalky linger.
Light, oily, crisp, minerally. 4

“Mandarin and grapefruit peel were used in the kettle and Guava and Mango added after fermentation.”

Fruit IPAs are tricky, it seems, because I’ve had more bad than good. This gets less fruit than if they’d just loaded up on hops, is lean despite the oats + wheat, and inexplicably bitter for something you’d expect to be juicy. No candy inside this pinata. 3.75
