On tap at the Broken Spoke, ATX.

From a choice of Shiner Light, bottled Stella, or this. Poured into a red Solo cup, so I never got a clear view of the color; in the dim light of the Spoke, it was a washed-out yellow. A fairly thick head of small bubbles that dissipated quickly. The aroma was simply stale beer. No true malt, no discernible hops. An inauspicious beginning.

The taste followed the aroma. Flat, watery and lukewarm, this cup was like one of Proust's madeleines, taking me back my first encounter with beer, a keg of this at a family reunion as a grade-schooler in the late 70's. Some things haven't changed.

On tap at Little Woodrows in Rice Village Houston, TX during happy hours

A - Poured a straw color with a white head that leaves lacing behind

S - Is of grainy malt and corn

T - Like it smells grainy malts and corn

M - This beer has a medium body with medium carbonation to it

O - Yeah its cheap macro beer but while in Texas on a hot day this beer hits the spot when its cold its refreshing and light enough to be pretty enjoyable a good everyday sort of beer that you don't have to think about just enjoy it

Pours a yellowish color with no head to speak of. Smells like rice and corn. Tastes clean at first, goes down fairly easy. It's very carbonated. The faint flavor of grains comes through as it warms. Its not offensive, but who cares. This is better in the bottle. Still, at 1.50 a pint I cant blame it for being what it is. Good enough value beer.

Ok.. so as a native San Antonian and Texan and I think people would be really interested in the history of LSB.

If you don't live in TX you are probably unaware of the 'National Beer of TX" advertising... but you should know this beer does kick ass.

It was formulated back in the blond "girly" beer days of the late 40s after WW2... but the history of brewing in San Antonio is a long proud tradition with the Lone Star Brewery and the Pearl Brewery. There is a large German population in San Antonio that wanted to brew beer on the scale of their homeland. Ed Friedrich in SA developed a method of air conditioning that enabled these breweries to brew beer year round.

The beer is a light lager with a decent amount of carbonation. The light sweet flavor is reminiscent of German brews and Pilzners. Very clear sparkly light yellow. Very rich head when poured vigorously. Taste is more malty and sweet then bitter and hoppy. Smells like beer.

Beer is better colder than warmer.

Very cheap beer. I buy 6pack of 24 oz cans for $3.88.

Slight metallic, bitter smell and similar taste, except watered down too. Maybe some corn too. A very generic beer, without anything special going for it. Medium to high Carbonation, and somewhat refreshing ice cold, but not a great beer taste-wise obviously, and most people over 21 won’t want this unless they’re on a budget. A very, very strict budget.

Had this on draft at the buckhorn saloon in San Antonio

Pours very light golden & effervescent. Zero head retention or lacing

S: Slight grainy & sweet amlt scents

T: Sweet malt & some grainyness. A little iron & honey follows. Finishes crisp & a little grainy

MF: Medium bodied & slightly over cabronated, go figure

Drinks pretty easy, I could 2-3 on a warm day, way better than BMC, a pleasant suprise; went well with my chopped beef bbq sandwich & jalapeno

I mean...it is what it is. Had this at Atlantic Beer Garden in Boston. It's got a sweet but musty smell to it. A little dull. This hails as the "National Beer of Texas". Come on Texas, you can do better than that! I'd probably rather go with a PBR if this is the genre of beer that is called for.

Poured almost a finger of head on a light straw colored body.
The aroma is an unattractive metallic and vomit smell.
The taste has a bitter and sweet note with a lot of metallic overtones.
The texture is crisp with a high carbonation.
Avoid this beer.

I had never had this one before and it is not available where I live, but on a trip through an adjacent state I stopped to pick up a few beers when I noticed this store had six packs of this stuff. I had listened to Texas musicians and others praise this stuff for so long I had made it a point to try at some time in my life, I did not realize it would be yesterday. Sometimes when you are not looking for something it just appears. Anyway, this beer was alright nothing to sing about, even though people have. This is more a novelty to me, but overall had it been the middle of summer and I was going to listen to some Texas troubadour sing about it it would fit the bill rather well. Anyway to the review, it smelled sweet and grainy and when I poured it in the glass it was a very pale yellow, almost colorless really. The taste did have a bite to it that I wasn't expecting but overall not bad, I could see myself drinking a few of these on a hot summer day while grilling out and listening to some good tunes. Like I said before it is what it is but Lone Star had a certain appeal which precipitated the purchase.

A Poured a clear light straw yellow color with low carbonation for the style, a small white head which fades fast leaving some minute white bubbles and almost no lacing

S: Grains, cooked coen and floral notes

T: Initial grain, corn like taste with some light sweetness, hint of sulfur peaks as does some some light floral notes and finishes rather dry, light, sordove sweet an lightly bitter

M: Light bodied, well carbonated, bitterness stays on the palate for a bit

O: Average. I have not had this in a looong time. Glad to see an old friend.

Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

Watching some live Spelunky action and downing some beers. Good times. This stuff pours a clear pale straw topped by a finger of relatively short-lived white foam. The nose comprises lightly-funky wheat, light hard water, and very light flowers. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some extra minerals in the water. The body is pretty light, with a light moderate carbonation and a watery feel. Overall, your basic, non-light adjunct lager. Not much to see (or taste) here, folks.

Clear and pale yellow, lots of fizz, not much head or lace.

Aroma is lightly sweet with notes of corn and not a lot else.

Taste is slightly sweet, with corn notes and just barely enough hops to detect. About what you'd expect from an adjunct lager.

Mouthfeel is fizzy and light bodied.

Overall it's not something I'd recommend unless maybe you're scrounging for quarters out of the back of your pickup truck.

Served in a bottle at Rudy's Country BBQ in Austin, TX

A: Pours a crystal clear pale to medium yellow in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall foamy bright white head that quickly fades to a small patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass.

S: The smell of this beer is almost non-existent... very light notes of corn adjunct malt sweetness.

T: Moderate to strong flavors of adjunct malts (corn and grain) but not unpleasant - there is a light amount of sweetness.

M: Just heavier than light bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin/watery but crisp.

O: Easy to drink and pairs relatively well with the smokey flavors and spices of BBQ. Could definitely be sessionable but would not be my first choice beer for it...

Thanks to xpimptastikx for sending me the "National Beer of Texas". Can with best before date of November 26th, 2012. Served in a pilsner glass.

A - A couple fingers of white foam with surprisingly decent retention. Head settles to a thick, creamy, cap, with splotchy lace. Transparent urine yellow body, with fast-moving bubbles visible.

S - Cereal grains, metal, rice, a mild vegetal note, and perhaps a hint of lemony hop.

T - The taste is mostly grain and bread, with perhaps a touch of corn sweetness late on the palate. Fairly inoffensive when cold, but unsurprisingly gets worse as it warms up with more creamed corn and cooked veggies.

M - Harsh carbonation, grainy texture, and a fairly dry, crisp finish. Somewhat watery, light body, with no obvious alcohol presence.

D - It's an adjunct lager, and it doesn't really do much to differentiate itself from its competitors. I was able to finish the 12oz can thanks to the relative dearth of flavor, light body, and minimal alcohol, but it's not an experience I'm dying to repeat.

Obtained as a leftover at the office. 12oz bottle with what I'm assuming is an expiration date of 4/10/11, based on Pabst bottle dating. So, on to the "National Beer of Texas". Poured into a pilsner glass.

A: Light yellow. As close to transparent without being water. White fluffy head that stays around for a few and leaves some sticky lacing down the glass.

S: Barely anything going on here. Touch of husky grain. A bit sweet.

T: Follows the nose exactly. Guess any hops have faded after one year of "aging".

O: Guess it's not totally fair since I tried an expired bottle. After trying 100+ Texas beers, I would say this beats Shiner's Ruby Redbird and that's about it. Well worth the money I spent.

Being a avid craft beer drinker, you need to have a beer that you just have everyday. This is my beer just for that purpose. I've probably had every top notch beer made in the world, but this always sits in my fridge. Its a good cheap beer that does its job well, quenching my thirst after a long day of work. Then I will dig deeper into the fridge and pull out something else to sip on. Its good for what its worth.

A somewhat tastier macro lager than the run of the mill, pale yellow with a fizzy white head that fizzles. Smell is beery for lack of a better descriptive and the flavor is grainy as can be. Ice cold it is quite refreshing, I wouldn't think about it much past that.

Aroma is - well, crisp and malty, but lacking complexity. At least it smells like a beer, albeit an industrial brew. It pours a typical clear straw yellow, not much head. Flavor is - meh, a little malty, that’s all. I’ve had "lite" beers with more flavor. Texture is fizzy but rather watery. I had to try it, and at least now I know.

The slogan reads The National Beer of Texas on the can. Poured into a pint glass. Pours the color of straw with an abundant, quickly dissipating white head. Plenty of bubbles can be seen streaming from the bottom of the glass. The smell is the typical adjunct lager smell. There is barley, corn, and faint grassy hops.
The taste follows the nose. The barley and corn are detectable and typical of the adjunct lager taste. The hop flavor is mild. The body is light with plentiful carbonation. The finish is crisp and dry. The drinkability is very good. Overall, this is a good beer. It's unoffensive and accomplishes what it sets out to do.

I'm writing this from Austin, Texas so you know I've had plenty of these over the years. It is what it is...a class of beer that doesn't merit long paragraphs to describe it.

The only thing I'm going to say about Lone Star beer is that you have to serve it cold and then it's actually quite satisfying.

A shot of whiskey with a 16oz ice cold Lone Star chaser works for me.

Clear with a golden to straw yellow colour and a creamy looking, part bubbly white head that has good retention.

Basic to say the least and almost water like in smell. There is some light corn, a touch of grassy hops and some other adjuncts but anything stronger would have been a positive.

Very light with some sweetness and grassy hops but both are faint and isolated. Some other non-de script adjuncts are present.

Smooth but very thin in body with a watery feel to it. There is some sweetness that lingers but not much else worth commenting on.

Very basic, not very adventurous pale lager that I could easily have done without. It was lacking in both smell and taste and did little to indicate it wasn’t just a bottle of water I was drinking.

Appearance: Pretty sudsy...almost soapy. Ok head and good carbonation. Straw yellow.

Smell: Roasted malt mixed with corn? Not terrible.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Not bad. Not good. More of the same typical American beer water. Mouthfeel is quite crisp though and very refreshing on a hot day in Santa Fe, NM.

Overall Drinkability: Goes perfectly well with BBQ on a hot day, which is how I had it in Santa Fe.

Pours clear yellow with a white foamy head with fair retention and spotty lacing. Smells somewhat sweet with grain, corn, and hops.

The taste is somewhat sweet, with corn, grain, and hops. The hops provide a little balance to the sweetness.

Light bodied, plenty of carbonation, not much aftertaste. Not the best or worst adjunct lager I have tried. Nothing to get to excited about either.

Had this while visiting San Antonio @ the old brewery location.

A: poured a nice rich golden color, no head at all,some bubbles floating to top.

S: Aroma is of corn adjunct and light malt no hops at all in smell.

T: Taste is of the same corn and light malt some light floral hop can be tasted.

M: Body is light and watery.

O: Overall glad to have another beer under my belt but would not seek this out again not the worst beer ever drank but slightly under the middle line.

Take any weak BMC and put a Texas-proud label on it and there you go - Lone Star Beer. Poured a 3" white soap suds head which faded fast. Standard clear pale straw yellow color. Almost no smell or taste but I suppose you could say it has a very weak grassiness to it. About as watery as they come. Everything is big in Texas, except this beer.
