1 Pint bottle from a 4pk for $4.99. Even though it was the featured sale beer at the local international supermarket, I had a feeling it wasnt going to be a home run.
Pours copper with a weak white head that dissipates quickly. Nice lacing on the side of the glass though.
Sweet floral notes and a hint of lemongrass in the nose but very malty as well. More malt heavy than hoppy. Slightly dank and musty.
Candied citrus hops, caramel maltiness across the middle with a piney bitter finish.
Medium to full bodied, viscous with great mouth coating.
Average to slightly above average. A fair drinker and especially for $4.99 a 4pk. I wanted more hops in the nose and taste but this has a good malty backbone that makes it very drinkable.

Hinterland Brewery/ India Pale Ale
POURED an amazingly super clean amber initially. The 22oz bottle serving into my 12oz beer glass had to wait for me to knock of the first 12oz. The second, remaining pour was a thick haze of visible yeastie beasties. I had to grade for the thick haze.
The MOUTHFEEL of the second pour was predictably heavier than the first - not an IPA style - but my fault in not turning the bottle slowly end-over-end and side to side before the first pour - but I was NOT expecting sediment in an IPA style.
AROMA: Expected herbal hit of an IPA.
FLAVOR: The first clear glassful was sharply herbal IPA; the second, yeastier glassful was a sour maltier flavor that I expect from Belgian Ale styles.
IF I have it again, I would make certain to have a fresh bottling + bottle turn.

This IPA has a very heavy malt presence that the hops accent, at best. It's thick and heavy, but not really in the manner that I can appreciate. Which turns this into more of a beer to just drink as opposed to being one to experience. Unfortunately, this is my 3rd beer from this brewery and I have to say I am less than thrilled. Would suggest passing on this one.

Appearance: Super hazy golden orange color with visible sediment suspended in the beer. Very thin frothy off-white head.
Aroma: A healthy mix of hops and malts. Sugar crusted orange and caramel.
Taste: A very well balanced IPA. The chosen malts give a rounding feel to the flavor with notes of caramel and toffee with a gentle sweetness. Perhaps an English barley blend. The hops are a little more subdued than in the average American IPA with medium bitterness. There is an orange zest and sugary flavor to the hops. The chosen hop strains work very well with the malt bill. 6.85% ABV seems about right and none of it is evident in the flavor. Finish is a tad dry and there is a bit of lingering bitterness as well as a watered down black coffee flavor.
Mouthfeel: Medium in body and very soft on the palate. Very smooth carbonation and an ease of drinkability.
Final Thoughts: Based on appearance and aroma I wasn't expecting to much out of the IPA. Much to my surprise the flavor is thoroughly enjoyable. Brewer's don't usually strive for balance in an IPA (indeed some of the best are hop dominated) but this is one case where balance pays off dividends. Would I drink it again? Yes, but I want a fresh bottle (not sure how old this one was).

Of course I love AIPA's, so this was unlikely to get a bad review. The appearance is not too cloudy with not a good head but a little lace. The aroma is weak for the style but the taste is pretty much all there and a bit darker tasting that many AIPA's. It is missing the hoppy piney taste and any yeastieness, but it has a good, unique taste.
Were it not for the uniqueness, this would not be worthwhile due to weakness in several categories, but it is truly unique tasting. I would only seek it out if I wanted a slightly milder IPA (more IPA than AIPA).
