as a preface to this review, this beer is a Rauchbier, NOT a Scottish Ale.
on tap at the satellite pub in Milwaukee. pours a fiery amber color with brown mixed in, and a half finger of light tan head. decent retention and mild lacings.
aroma is of distinct campfire smoke and rich caramelized malts that are mildly sweet. a distant bbq flavor hangs in the background, and gets absorbed by the smoke. solid in the nose.
taste is more of the same with a solid smoked character that resembles smoke extract, and NOT authentic smoked wood of some kind. the same caramelized malt character hangs in the background, and provides a nice base for the smoke. pleasant overall (for a rauchbier) with a campfire, ash-like smoked character.
mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth with a burnt character that lingers after the fact.
drinkability is good. this is a solid rauchbier with a drinkable quality and just enough smoke to keep it burnt in the end. fans of smoke will find solace here. easy drinking, but when all is said and done, this brew needs a much more authentic smoked character, not one that reeks of extract.

Served cold on draft at the Brewery's Bar
A) Reddish - copper - brown, caramel with tall tan head. Slight haze but light passes through. Likely a 'heavy' style Scottish Ale
S) Sweet malty wart, peat, burnt fruit, floral spice
T) Caramel & Toffee, rich with bitter hops and smooth finish.
M) Ample carbonation, very balanced, creamy
D) Genuine sample of the style.

I enjoyed this beer as part of the 3 - 6oz tasting flite at the brewery's new Milwuakee location.
Appearance: Deep amber color with a decent off-white head.
Smell: Sweet and malty.
Taste: Can now taste the maltiness and had a nice finish.
Mouthfeel: A little bit light.
Drinkability: Not my favorite of the bunch, and unfortunately I don't have enough background with other Scottish Ales to make a good comparison.
