Pours a black with deep ruby tones when held to the light. Thin tan had with very little retention in the glass. Fairly strong bourbon, oaky aromas. Very earthy in nature, peat and dirt undertones to the wood character. Coffee grinds come through as well. Fairly big bourbon flavor on the mouth, again very earthy in character, dirt, peat, coffee grounds, and a hint of vanilla to the toasted malts that make up the backbone. Flavors a bit out of balance, especially the coffee. Fairly smooth, body was a bit thin and watery for a barrel aged beer in my opinion. A good beer, highly drinkable, just not the best example out there.

I enjoyed this beer on tap at the Milwaukee location. Served in a tall narrow glass.
Appearance: Pours a dark brown color with a billowy tan head that stuck around for a while. Unfortunately, this was the best part of this beer.
Smell: Coffee and bourbon whiskey but fairly faint.
Taste: The main thing that came through was the coffee. The smell suggested the whiskey would be there, but I could barely detect it. The bar tender said this was aged for 6 months, but it doesn't seem as if it was aged even that long.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and fairly smooth for what I am used to in barrel-aged beers.
Drinkability: Overall, not a bad beer, just not was I was looking for in a barrel-aged beer. The bartender was nice enough to let me have an ounce or so of the regular Luna and there was not that much of a difference. Perhaps I should have started with the regular Luna and then moved to this beer. I would try again but would not seek out.

on tap at the satellite pub in Milwaukee. pours a clear black with a single finger of tan, dense head that retains well and has light lacings. looks great in the glass, but unfortunately that is where the positive notes end.
aroma is heavy on the bourbon, with a deep roasted character mixed in with the warming character of the barrels. not much else, except for a faint medicinal character (some would call it 'Band-Aids') in the background that does quite well to kill most of the good things about the aroma.
taste is...well...wow. what a let down on the palate. light, flabby, and much less flavorful than the aroma would suggest. the same warming bourbon is present, but without the body to back it up, it falls right on its face, a face that happens to be a hollow note of roasted malt that does little to add bitterness or body to the overall brew. this may be the first barrel-aged stout for this BA that could be considered a failure.
mouthfeel is medium bodied and thin (compared to the flavors present), with a finish that only sees a note of bourbon linger.
drinkability is good, but it is so thin on the palate without much character to back it up. this is a curious brew, because Hinterland usually does a decent job with their beers. it almost suggests that the brewers were so exited to get bourbon notes out of the barrel that they went all out on the bourbon and discounted the actual beer itself. not recommended.

Poured from a small hand filled swing top growler to a pint glass. The Liquid is a reddish black, the carbonation has faded.due to the exchange. The Head is a small dark tan pad almost lifeless.
The smell is nice very nice, woodsy bourbon and coffee with bourbon and vanilla notes.
The taste is very good this is an outstanding brew despite the almost spent carbonation. The brew is mildly complex, some chocolate and more coffee flavor all washed in a mild bourbon and oaky mix.
The mouthfeel is compromised by the lack of good carbonation, however some does exist. The body is close to full.
The Drinkability is quite good I would love to have some more of this. I hope they deside to bottle it.
This fine brew was brought to be my a great trader and good friend NFLMVP, Prosit und Zum Wohl. MK

Description from the Brewery:
Hinterlands highly acclaimed Luna Coffee Stout lends itself perfectly to barrel aging. We cellar this rich stout for two months in bourbon barrels provided by the Heaven Hill Distillery. The result is a complex beer with a nice background of bourbon and oak. We recommend enjoying this brew slightly chilled. Pour this beer and let it rest while you enjoy another of our award winning selections. It will be worth the wait! Opaque, black and rich.
Wow, get this while it's around! When I first heard about it, I couldn't control the drooling. The Luna Stout was great as it was, but Bourbon Barrel Aged!?!? Pours black with a thin, dense brown head. Black body. Aromas of coffee and chocolate with a backbone of bourbon. Somewhat sweeter than I expected. Tastes a hell of a lot stronger than the percentage leads to believe. Compared to the regular, it's missing somthing withouht the nitro, but is still a fine stout. Probably one of the best session stouts you'll find. I could drink only this for the rest of my life and die a happy man!
