Maple Bock pours a black color with a small white creamy head. There is a smokey sweet like aroma. The taste has a nice burnt malty taste, with just hints of a sweet maple. Good full flavor, nice dry bitterness at the end. Overall a very nice bock, full flavors, nice blend of syrup.

This is a nice enough beer, but it strikes me as more of an interesting novelty type of production than anything overtly noteworthy. The maple syrup provides a sweet and pleasant tone that defines things, but also limits everything as a whole to the maple syrup and what it provides.

16 ounce bottle. Served in a mug, the beer pours dark brown with some reddish tints. There's also about a half inch light tan head that stays around for a while. There's also a small amount of lacing. The brew smells like maple, caramel, molasses and some sweet malt. Taste is pretty much the same as the aroma, but there's also a slight bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and smooth with moderate carbonation. This is the second Hinterland beer I've tried, and I've liked them both. I'll definitely try more of their other beers! $9.99 a 4-pack.

Web description promises that "hints of chocolate and caramel malts and a touch of maple syrup fill your nose. Maple Bock enters your mouth dense, and full. With the nice taste of a solid bock, maple syrup flavor doesn't overpower the rest of the beer." Try as I might, I couldn't find maple in either the nose or the flavor. It pours with a very nice, dark color and firm head. It is a chocolatey, dense beer that comes off more like a stout than a bock. A good to very good beer, but not a great one.

The web site lists it at 6.8% abv, by the way.

Comes in a 16 oz bottle.

A thick dark brown in color, this beer shows deep red highlights. It develops a sexy rocky, thick light brown crown of head just over two fingers tall. It shows good retention, fading to thick foam only after a good amount of time sitting, and leaves thick lacing in webs.
It's almost standard bock here but for a strength both in ingredients and alcohol, seeming to straddle the line between bock and doppelbock but giving me no qualms about believing bock. The malts backbone is solid, laying down a good foundation to work with. Alcohol steers clear of being too fusel or ethanolic but adds warmth. There's just the slightest hint of coffee and a touch of something like vanilla in a very light sweetness. Maple adds some slight character to it, but for the most part is boiled out, I can assume. just a touch of smoke/roast character makes this on a well-rounded brew.
The body is strong without being too heavy for the style. It leans that way, but it stops just short. It's pretty smooth with a bit of creaminess in the texture after just a very slight crispness up in front.

500ml. A very dark pour, layer of cream head that retained a while.

Aroma, malty caramel, toffee. Maple I suppose.

Taste, Malty caramel again. Some burnt malt and fig. I don't get the overly harsh that others found. Tad of molasses, cocoa.

Light side of mid, maybe a little thin but not badly. Abv is a little high for a bock but only slightly warming.
I found this to be quite pleasant.

Poured into a Beer Stein

Appearance - Dark brown that is about as close to black as you can get. Pours a soapy 3 finger head that is surprisingly brown in color. Decent head retention but no lacing to speak of

Smell - Sweet Maple Syrup, Caramel, Yeasts, Roasted Malts and Barley. It smells like freshly harvested syrup from a maple tree.

Taste - Burnt malts & yeasts, barley with just a dash of maple. I was expecting more of a sweeter taste but instead I got a burnt malty ale that is rather unpleasant

Mouthfeel - Very light bodied with only a small amount of carbonation, so it's at least easy to drink

Overall - I was very disappointed by this beer. The flavor was more burnt than anything else, which is a let down for me because I was really looking forward to having this as it was sitting in my fridge.

The beer wa chilled and served in an Imperial Pint glass.

Ap- The body of the beer is a clear mahogany coloration. The head is a light tan shortly lived with no lacing.

S- The aroma of the beer is moderately roasted and toasted. Nice caramal maltyness noted with a hint of molassis and a subdued maple aroma.

T- The flavor of the beer is toasted, and lightly roasted bready malt. The sweetness of caramel, subdued maple and molassis are all shortly lived and swallowed up in the roasted flavors. A brief steelyness to the flavor prevents this beer from being really good. Go back to the drawing board and remove the metalic notes.

M- The body of the beer is a bit of a let down. The body of the beer is slightly thin and carbonation isnt really enough. Not terrible but not really good.

O- A bit of a mixed bag. I wont be buying another four pack of this particular beer but will try some of the other offerings from this brewery.

Appearance is dark brown-red with a thick, tan head and nice lacing.

Nose is sweet malt with maple, brown sugar, and honey.

Taste is very roasted, with almost-charred malt, mild hops, and Coke syrup. The maple is mild, but present.

Mouthfeel is refreshing with medium carbonation.

Overall, it is nice bock with a dash of maple.

I went to the Hinterlands with my nonic pint.

Appearance- The finger and a half width of ecru-colored foam leaves behind tendrils of lace as it dies. The body is an almost opaque amber with some ruby-copper highlights.

Smell- The nose has just the slightest bit of maple, with a little bready malt. I also catch some molasses and vanilla.

Taste- Syrupy to start, it certainly implies maple, but there is an acidity here as well. The malt is a little biscuity and has a touch of roast. I would say there is a little chocolate in the bock as well. It is not a cloying sweet, but a little bitter and robust, like a dark chocolate. Pretty decent flavors, but of course, more maple would have helped.

Mouth feel- A medium to light body, it is a little thin. However, it is very slick and easy to drink. I am all right with the feel.

Overall- This maple bock is one of the more robust bocks I have had with out being very sweet. Maple is in the beer, but you have to really search it out. It could be so much bigger in this beer. The malt is fine, but I think a sweeter palate would have helped immensely.

Poured into a snifter.

2.5 A: Black color. About two fingers of frothy beige head. Retention is poor and no lacing is left.

3.5 S: Super smoky with a deep supple roastiness. There is some maple syrup, but I was expecting more. Grainy malts. Not much else going on here.

3.5 T: Grainy malts with a dry roastiness. A touch of smoke, toastiness, and a light chocolate. Maple syrup is very hard to detect and without "maple" in the name of this beer, there would be no way of knowing it is there. This should be labeled a schwarzbier since that's what it tastes like.

2.5 M: Lighter medium body. A bit too much carbonation, which is quite biting. Lacking creaminess.

3.0 D: Not bad, but I'm not impressed and I'm a bit disappointed given the very low maple contribution.

Picked up a bottle (overpaid) for $3.99 at Vintage Estates.

A - Looks more like a porter than a bock. Deep black with a 1/2 inch of mocha colored head.

S - Initial smell is sweet with workings of bock tones. Biscuit malts, mild hops, and some sweet malts which I assume is maple but very faint.

T - Wow despite of all the reviews I can't believe how medical hopped this is! Borderline acidic I get very little bock tones maybe some roast or biscuit. Maple flavors do prove some sweetness but it is again faint.

M - Medium bodied and again acidic. Kind of hard to drink.

Overall I wouldn't consider this a maple beer or even a bock since I got mostly roast I consider it mainly a porter. Wouldn't buy again.

Pours a strikingly dark hazy mahogany with a half finger of tan foam that sticks to the side of the glass leaving fits of lace and rings. Smells distinctly and deliciously of maple with a complimentary underpinning of biscuit malt. Very nice. The maple element isn't nearly as apparent in the taste. There is a slight maple vein in waht is mostly a biscuit, bready, slightly caramel malt base. Slightly sweet but finishes mostly clean but somewhat acidic. Medium body, low carbonation. Good drinking beer, wish it had more maple.

Poured from a pint bottle into a pint glass.

A - one of the most beautiful beers I've seen in a long time. A gorgeous deep mahagony with a 2.5 finger medium kahki head.

S - chocolate with lots of yeast fruitiness. Almost stouty in the nose

T - one of the biggest letdowns is the lack of maple flavor, but it's not the first time advertised maple has been a letdown - I think the only place it's ever beer apparent is with the Founders maple bourbon barrel aged beers, which imparts just the smallest notes. Very malty side with some victory or biscuit coming through in the mid to late palate. I'm not a big bock drinker, but lots of the same malt and yeast notes found in Fat Tire. +1 to their marketing dept to get me to buy this. No hops to speak of.

M - more body here than I was expecting. Not a lot of sweetness from it, but more than likely the result of the yeast uses and the maltiness.

D - low for me. A little on the thick side without the flavor notes I was looking forward to.

Overall, not a bad beer. I'd call it borderline better than average/good. With this style, there is such a range of interpretations, it's hard to know what you're getting into. I think an extra hop flavor charge and maybe some low degree crystal malts may help balance this a little bit, paired with a lower ferment temp, or maybe changing yeast up.

A - Pours dark caramel brown with ruby highlights. Agressive, creamy, off white head leaves ample lacing down the glass.

S - Burnt sugar, maple syrup, and toasted marshmallow aromas are strong from the start, giving way to more roasty scents at the end.

T - Nice and roasty, almost a cola flavor. maple syrup balances the subtle bitterness from the roast. Not too complex, very rounded. The alcohol sneaks in, but is well hidden.

M - Not too vigorous, not too creamy. The carbonation breaks up the flavors to keep any one from getting too intense.

O - Very nice beer. The maple can be hit and miss. I'd like more maple in a Maple Bock, but beggars can't be choosers.

Hinterland Maple Bock pours a finger of tan foam over an inky brown fluid. Carbonation is very subdued and the head collapses into a sticky disk pretty quickly. The nose suggests a myriad of dark flavors- molasses and bitter chocolate predominate, with notes of raisin. The flavor is big, bold, and straightforward- sweet dark malts, with touches of diacetyl, grain, and dark chocolate, finishing with bitter notes of espresso and herbs. Mouthfeel is full is round, drying a bit, though the maple syrup that I feel contributed to the drying did impart a very mild impression of syrup in the aftertaste. Good solid brew.

Eyed this all day, and finally split a four pack with a coworker...

a - a nice light brown, deep amber pour with decent sized, soft looking head

s - light notes of the maple syrup, sugar...some maltiness - but again, lighter than I'd hoped...

t - get a nice, light hit of the maple presence...mixed amongst a decent malt backbone..touch of smoke...

m - pretty palatable

0 - pretty decent beer... perfect w/ pancakes, eggs, and bacon!

Served in a Stone Ruination IPA pint.

A- pours a dark copper, 2 finger tan head. Some lacing that resides quickly.

S- toasted malts, slight smoke, maple syrup

T- sweet toasted malts, some smoke, just a hint of vanilla. Maple syrup comes through more as the beer warms.

M- medium body with a lighter carbonation feel. Easy drinking beer with nice crispness at the finish.

O- liked this beer but nothing outstanding. Not sure if I would by again, but would drink again.

Had all sorts of anxiety before opening this bottle; how much maple would there be, does the maple over power this lager, is the APV too high oh lord?

It looked good in my snifter, a slick black brew with minimal head which disipated fast, but, I'd just poured it after walking in from a January night dog walk. Was my nose too stuffed up to appreciate the bouquet? In fact it wasn't. There are faint hints of a roasty stout, but that's it, faint hints. There is a light lingering hop after taste, but let me emphasize 'light'. After a while this opened up to some more flavors but beyond that there was not much to taste from this Maple Bock, not even the maple! This was a let down from Hinterland, but not all was lost with a steal of a purchase at $3 for a single pint bottle from Armanetti's on Lincoln.

Another great offering from Hinterland. This is by far my favorite seasonal they offer. 16oz bottle poured into a standard pint glass

Appearance: Dark brown pour with a foamy head. Looks great and leaves a nice lacing on the glass
Smell: Was expecting a blast of maple syrupy smell, but instead its rich, smoky, and subtly sweet instead. No complaints because I was hoping it wouldnt be like drinking a bottle of maple syrup. Apparently this is brewed using maple syrup made by the brewery, which is a bonus.
Taste: Spot on. The "maple" isn't necessarily a syrupy taste, but again, more of a smoky, wood flavor that the syrup might have been stored in. Real maple syrup isn't like the Aunt Jemimi you get off the grocery store shelves. This tastes more like real maple syrup you would get off a farm.
Mouthfeel: Creamy and smooth. Just as you would imagine a beer like this should be. I hate when a beer tastes great, but the mouthfeel doesn't match the taste characteristics. This beer pulls it off flawlessly.

Overall: Again, another spot on brew by Hinterland. I've heard they might offer this in a barrel aged and I can't wait to check that out.

Poured from a 16 oz bottle into a Willi Becher pint glass. This bock is darker than I expected...very dark brown with reddish tint on the outside. Beautiful khaki head formed. Settles quickly.
First tried this beer at a festival, where it was explained that the maple syrup used is made by the owner of the brewery. Very cool.
You don't get a big maple syrup flavor...more of a subtle maple wood hint. There is also a undertone of smokiness. I'm not usually a fan of smokey beers, but this is so subtle that it works for me. This is a very tasty beer.
The mouthfeel is so silky smooth; very enjoyable to drink.

Overall, this beer is killer. I paired this with a pork butt that I braised in this beer, and together it was awesome. Recommend.

Appearance: beautiful deep amber, robust head up front slowly dissipates, fine lacing.

Smell: big medium-weight maltiness, molasses, no notable hop characteristic. No maple that I can detect.

Taste: more of the maltiness, hint of sweetness.

Mouthfeel: outrageously smooth, creamy carbonation. Like a silk pillow for my tongue.

Overall: nice, drinkable beer. Jeez, I just now looked at the ABV. This could be a troublesome beer.

A: Deep cola brown rimmed by a thin brown collar.

S: A big whiff yields rich chocolate and caramel malts as well as some herbal/hay-like attributes.

T: Wasn’t quite sure if the herbal scents were actually hops or something else, but the flavor confirmed my suspicions. Starts out surprisingly bitter, transitioning into coffee and chocolate flavors. Bitterness easily overshadows what little sweetness the maple might have contributed. Finish is long and heavy on the roasted malt.

M: Smooth slick body with a bone dry finish. Moderately carbonated, yet feels pretty snappy.

Maple wasn’t too apparent for me in the flavor, although its effects were noticeable in the mouthfeel. I’m wondering if this was a sweeter beer when released in the spring (early summer?). It was also hopped a bit more heavily than I’ve previously experienced in the style. Still, all things considered, a tasty option.

Got a bottle from my buddy. This beer pours great into a pint glass. Looks and smells amazing. This beer will pour with a thick and creamy head. It looks beautiful. I was expecting more of a maple syrup taste since it is in the name but they definitely don't overdo it. The mouthfeel is just how it looks - thick and creamy. This is hands-down the best bock I have ever drank. The maple taste is there but it is not overdone and is in the background. If you see this beer at your local liquor store, it is a must-buy if you like bocks.
