English Brown Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (74), on-tap (13)

Notes:
A traditional English-style brown ale, but with more body. Its deep brown color comes from a combination of Chocolate and Black malts. Tall, dark and smooth – the perfect cure for the domestic beer blahs.

A: Nice reddish-brown. Finger-thick head that drops to a thin film - like thin snow over muddy water.

S: Not much there, but what is there is reminiscent of birch trees and freshwater lake but a tad more stale.

T: Not very sweet - burnt under-ripe squash with a small touch of light Camel cigarette minus the dirt. No citrus-ey hops here, the malt provides all the bitter.

MF: Way too thin, in my opinion. If it was rounder on the tongue and a bit less prickly, it would be a nice dry brown alternative to cloyingly sweet browns.

Overall, it does some things very well but drops the ball in other areas. There are better browns regardless of whether you prefer sweet or dry browns. And yet they got the taste mostly right.

Had on tap.

Served in a pint glass, the beer arrived hazy brown with a 1.5 finger tan head. Really great lacing.

Roasted malt is quite apparent in the aroma along with a touch of cocoa and spicy hops.

Flavor starts out with the roasted malt and transitions into a bit of cocoa and coffee. Spicy hops are there along with a very light nuttiness. Moderate to high bitterness is present throughout and lingers for quite awhile.

Overall a pretty average brown ale. I would get again.

On-tap at Vic's On the River, Savannah, GA

A: The beer is clear brownish amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high beige head that died down but left a bit of lacing covering the surface and a ringe of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Aromas of toasted and roasted malts are present in the nose along with some hints of fruits.
T: The taste is quite malty with flavors of dark malts and hints of toasted malts and chocolate.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The beer is very flavorful and easy to drink and pairs particularly well with burgers.

This beer is solid..

Dark brown, light colored tan head.

Smells of chocolatey malts and malts in general, caramel maybe...definitely malty

Taste is of chocolate and dark malt, typical of a good brown ale, and mouthfeel is smooth and finishes clean, no carbonation issues.

Stable, solid brew here, pick one up - a go-to brown ale..

Presentation: Poured into a pint gleass at the local Flying Saucer.

A: Ever so slightly hazy dark amber-mahogany with a thin, light tan head.

S: Lots of malty caramel and toffee. Mild fruity hops.

T&M: Very nice creamy, medium body. Caramel roasted malt flavor. Very mild hop bitterness but flavor is mainly malty, caramel, and toffee tastes as the smell would indicate.

This is definitely one of the best brown ales I have had and better fresh on tap. I could actually drink a few of these.

16 oz. - $4.75 at Taco Mac in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Clear, brown body with a small, though sustained, white head. Very coating lacing.

Smell: Fairly restrained maltiness smelling only of some vague, nutty brown malts.

Taste: Dry, dark caramel and shelled nuts make up the malts with only a minor sweetness. Small, small hint of scorched grains. Slight, lightly earthy hop bitterness. Dry, crisp, short finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Just a tad watery.

Drinkability: Sure, it's very drinkable, but I certainly would appreciate a heft to both its body and overall malt character.

Appearance: spot on. color was a perfect dark amber/reddish tan, head was low (appropriate to style, but also possibly because it was served too cold -- this was the pub's assumption that American's want frozen beer).

Smell: The hop presence was appropriate, but it lacked a bit of the maltiness i would expect in this variety.

Taste: Excellent nuttiness, maltiness more present in the flavor than in the aroma; there was a hint of biscuit-type malt (but not nearly Belgian).

Mouthfeel: low carbonation, but again, probably because it was served too cold.

Drinkability: i had more than one!

Clear brown-amber color. Distinct nutty flavor. Went down very easy. No off-tastes like I have experienced with Newcastle, for instance. I would choose the Patriot or the Bell Ringer from R J Rockers before the Bald Eagle, but never-the-less an enjoyable beer.

Had on-tap at Terry's Taproom
Color is a dark brown. Just a little light gets through and shows some red hues. Thin head that doesn't last very long.
Smell is great. It's a nice mixture of smokey and nutty.
The flavor is very balanced and was more complex than I was expecting. The roasted malts are the first thing that I notice and are dominate. But there is also a smokiness that adds complexity. The finish is a nutty chocolate flavor. The chocolate is more pronounced than you would think. It leaves a lasting nutty aftertaste.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied, but doesn't really stand out to me in any way.
This is a great beer that is easy to session and just may be my favorite RJ Rockers beer.

This beer poured a nice deep brown with a slight head. The smell was caramel like. The taste was somewhat like brown sugar. This beer was very smooth in the mouthfeel. I could drink this beer again. Hopefully, R.J. will start distributing in NC soon.

Quaffed a few at Abby's Restaurant in Spartanburg, SC. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin, tan head. No lacing. Sweet, malty aroma with a hint of chocolate. Rich chocolate malt flavor with just enough hop bitterness to balance the sweetness of the malt. A very drinkable brew and a good representation of the style. Tastes like a Bass used to taste, only better.

I had this one at the restaurant at the Greenville/Spartanburg airport, where they had four brews from this microbrewery on tap. I was highly pleased to see that. Of course, they charged a good price for the 16-oz. glasses they served, but it was well worth it.

This was a clear brown ale, with a very small head. Whether it would have been bigger poured from a bottle, I do not know.

The aroma was of medium malt, sweet, and slightly fruity. But one that was very hard to pin down.

The fore- and aftertaste were quite bitter, which I love. It was mildly hoppy, but not overpoweringly so. There was no hint of sweetness or fruitiness that the nose implied.

This was a very drinkable ale, and went perfectly with the nachos I was eating at the time.

I just feel sorry for the poor souls in the restaurant who I saw ordering bottles of the macros... they had no idea was was so close, and how much better it was.

Modeled after a traditional deep brown English Brown ale. Pours a deep brown. Couldn't judge the head because I was tasting in a 2.5 oz shot glass. Has a nose of chocolate and malt. Has a taste of malt, chocolate, and a slight hops for balance. Great beer.

Appearance: Translucent dark brown. Sediment visible when viewed against light. Nice head lace.
Smell: Some dried strawberry (I think that is the tart I'm getting), light chocolate, and nut.
Taste: Some dried strawberry (I think that is the tart I'm getting), light chocolate, and nut..
Mouthfeel: Light carbonation. Slightly watery.

I'm not sure what to think of this brew. It has an interesting smell and taste. However, it's quite light in both regards, and perhaps too blandly balanced. There is a slight hollowness or watery taste that makes this appear rather weak. It's a decent drink, however, I wouldn't get it again.

Rootbeer color with some ruby hues coming through on the edges but pretty dark brown in the middle. Slight haze, pretty opaque. 1 Finger off white head that fades to a film fairly shortly. Tight bubbles of lace with every sip, very little stickiness. Nose of raw grain, toasted notes, maybe a little chocolate and caramel. Pretty clean aroma.dark Bready, caramael maltiness up front. Bit of offsetting bitterness towards the middle. Smokiness in the finish. Almost a burnt tobacco aftertaste. Medium body smooth mouhtfeel. Little light. Solid enough ale. Reminds me some of what I cam across in the pubs of London, but nothing spectacular. Very drinkable, would be a good session ale.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a hazy murky brown with an off-white head which fades and doesn't lave too much lacing and there's decent retention. There's alot of sediment/floaties. The aromas are very faint. Lots of caramel and chocolate malts. There's some raisins in the mix as well. The flavors are very grainy and has mineral like characteristics. There's a touch of maple and vanilla. There's a very subtle bitterness. The mouthfeel is on the heavier side of light-bodied. There's a high amount of carbonation, fizzy, but smooth. Alcohol goes unnoticed.

As a big brown ale fan, I can't say this one really grabbed my attention.

Pours a murky super dark brown with a 2 inch foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, cocoa, and some nutty aromas. Taste is of toasted malt, burnt cocoa, and slight nutty flavors. There is a mild medicinal-like bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer with a good smell but a somewhat disappointing flavor.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into me conical Guinness pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Bottle acquired as part of an RJ Rockers variety pack at Hi-Time Liquor in Cost Mesa, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are average given the brewery.

Served refrigerator cold and allowed to warm over the course of consumption.

A: Pours a one finger head - thin, without much cream, and of mediocre retention. Colour is a semitransparent caramel-brown. No visible yeast particles.

Sm: Foul malts, stale cream, and awful off-nut notes. Repugnant. Moderately strong.

T: Nuts in the body and climax. Empty clean malts and stale cream comprise the open. No subtlety, complexity, or layering. Boring and bland. Imbalanced both structurally and flavour-wise.

Mf: Smooth and wet. The thickness is okay, but doesn't feel quite right. Slightly overcarbonated.

Dr: Drinkable but unremarkable. A rather dull and uninspired brown ale with little to offer even to fans of the style. I wouldn't get it again and wouldn't recommend it. It's priced alright, but far better brown ales can be had.

This one is a nice deviation as there are not enough really good brown ales in the world. This one is rather excellent and an extremely nice beer to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon.

The beer pours a beautiful dark brown with a light tan a luxurious head that fades slowly leaving a fine lacing down the glass as it fades.

The nose is a tad smoky with strong malts and subtle hops and a tinge of caramel blending together. The nose is a tad weak for my tastes but after tasting the beer I am forgetting the weakness of the nose.

The flavor is the best part the smokiness continues to be a dominant component but that is a good thing. It is extremely well balanced and matches well with the maltiness that is rich and flavorful that is perfectly balanced with the hops. There are notes of coffee and dark chocolate along with a touch of caramel to match the nose. Overall a very well balanced beer and very enjoyable.

The mouthfeel is rich and full and combined with the flavor results in an extremely satisfying beer.

Marked "3065". According to Fresh Beer Only!, that's the "born on" date.

A: Very dark red with a nice white head that retains decently. Some lacing.

S: Not much, really. Some earthy hops and a touch of booze when I really concentrate.

T: Some mildly roasted and toasted malts and a hit of sweetness. A quick, mild flash of chocolate comes through towards the finish, as doe some hops. The hops linger on the finish nicely. The flavor is pleasant enough, but it is unfortunately understated. This is definitely a brown in the English tradition.

M: Thin and a bit to spritzy, but it's better when I pound the bottle into the glass.

O: Drinkability is high.

Pours a dark mahogany brown color, with a thick, creamy off-white head, but the presence of a lot of chunky floaters detracts from the appearance. The aroma is light and nutty, with a little bit of caramel sweetness and some chocolate. The flavor likewise has a little bit of chocolate and some dark caramel sweetness, but there is also a substantial astringency that distracts and detracts from the dryly sweet flavor profile. The thin-medium body and fine, prickly carbonation do little to mask these problems. Overall, although aspects of this beer's character are fine, the totality of the drinking experience is not something to back for.

Medium brown and ruby color. Insane tan head that makes pouring this beer take forever. Lots of lacing though. OK bubbling.

The aroma is a nutty, but somewhat boozy, toasted and lightly roasted malt mix.

Super toasted malt mixes with a walnutty yeast and malt flavor mix. Palate is a little thin. But this beer is a great session brew that I wish I could get in IL.

Poured into a standard pint glass. The beer is a deep rich coffee-cinnamon color. An off-white head dissipates quickly, but there is some random lacing. The beer smells of nuts and cinnamon? The taste is very malty with some cinnamon and nuttiness coming through. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and finishes malty, but clean.

Overall, not a bad beer. I feel it has a weird cinnamon presence that dominates. It looks good, feels good, and tastes god, but maybe not a six pack. i bought a single bottle. Worth a try.

A medium to dark brown beer. Tan one-finger head.

A sweet, malty aroma. Somewhat crisp

Semi-sweet caramel flavor upfront. With a dry, toasty, grainy finish.

Medium heavy bodied mouthfeel. Great carbonation.

This is a nice beer, overall. I would prefer the flavor to be sweeter on the back end. It has a pretty dry finish for my taste. But, it's really good anyway.
