P: Murky super dark cola appearance with thin cappuccino head.
S: Rich caramel and toffee malt, roasted grain, sweet molasses, prunes, cocoa powder and stale coffee. Clove, cinnamon, and faint licorice. Cherry cola and bourbon fumes with big inhales.
T/M: Coffee, amaretto sweetness, bittersweet cocoa and loads of roasted grain. Really earthy and less fruity than I expected. Timid fruit sweetness in the after bite. No alcohol presence. Light-medium grainy body with an aggressively effervescent sting. Finish is dry and sweet.
O: This at first was drinking like a porter until the subtle sweet fruit came in on the tale end. A decent beer but not a huge success. I would drink this again but won't seek it out.

Black, with short-lived, quarter inch, froth foam that leaves scant lacing and a thin film on a Dogfish Head snifter.
Phenol up front and dominated by roasted grain and powdered chocolate.
The flavor follows the nose, the chocolate being more prominent, but is mostly grainy with a light, short finish. The balance is decent.
A medium body with watery texture and big, fizzy carbonation. Light alcohol.
I had this as a fresh bottle and later aged nine months with no significant effect. This is a decent beer that works well with sausage or kielbasa.

This beer pours with a muddy, near-opaque dark cola brown, with almost no head at all. The aroma is dark and fruity, with a light cherry-like sweetness and a little brown sugar overlaid on a bed of cereal grains. The flavor is likewise fruity and sweet against a nutty, dry graininess. There is also a bit of astringency and some mild but noticeable alcohol burn that distract from the initial flavor profile. It has a nice light/medium body, but the texture is a bit too drying. In the end, this beer has an interesting flavor profile, but a few negative characteristics drag down the overall impression.

Thinnish offwhite head, translucent dark brown body.
Nose has heavy chocolatey malt. Really the sort of malt that just makes you think of malt. Like malt balls.
Body is malty, not overly rich, dryish and really, really nice. Kinda of a German dunkel. None of the heaviness or sweetness I associate with wheat, but this is really well balanced and incredibly drinkable.
Smooth, kinda coarse and airy. Lightish, I guess.

A- this beer had a huge head to it. Kind of like when you get a bad beer. Thick foam set on top of a dark brown beer with rusty orange highlights.
S- Wheat and dark fruit. Yeasty and malty. there's some faint smells of vanilla licorice as well.
T- I get some toasted barley and wheat. Some hints of dark fruits and vanilla.
M- Very chalky and dries out the mouth.
O- Not to overly impressed with this one. Didn't seem to have alot that just jumped out at me. So So.

Black with dark brown highlights. Quick head and very little foam.
Dry chalky yeast aroma with roasted barley and wheat malts keeping the aroma bready.
Chalky palates and flavor throughout the whole beer. Roasty and toasty malts with some dry powdered fruit flavors as well. Palate is pretty thin overall. Pretty easy to drink, but not full on flavor.

Pours a dark brown w/ reddish highlights when held to the light. This beer has a massive two and a half finger chocolate colored head, which lasts for a while. The nose is chocolate, dark fruit, roasted malt, and some phenol smells. The taste is coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit. Very malty and chewy brew. Feel is medium full, with a definite chewy vibe to it. Big, full aftertaste. Overall, a nice beer, and an interesting style.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
Pours pitch black with a one finger tan head. Retention isn't very good and neither is lacing.
Aroms is of roasted malt and cocoa. Some coffee in there as well.
Taste is quite roasty up front with coffee and chocolate flavors. Some dark fruit is slightly apparent towards the finish. Fairly mild bitterness with no hop flavor present. Mouthfeel is slick and smooth. Medium bodied.
Overall a pretty good beer. Drinks more like a porter than a wheat beer but enjoyable on a cold night.

From 12/22/11 notes. Big thanks to the staff at Stateline for digging around the back and finding this one for me. Style #100 of 104 reviewed. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
a - Pours a dark reddish brown color with two fingers of tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Had lasts for two to three minutes and leaves no lacing on the glass.
s - Smells of sweet dark fruits, roasted malts, bready malts, and light chocolate. As it warmed up much more sweet fruit came out. Pretty nice.
t - Tastes of roasted malts, fruity malts, and toasted malts. Also light chocolate and bready malts. More roasty than the nose and less fruit, a tiny step down for me.
m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.
o - Overall a pretty good beer; much better than I was expecting. I think as it warmed up it got better and more swet dark fruits came out, though the taste was still dominated by roasted malts. Something I'd have again.

Bottle courtesy of thagr81us and signed by the brewmaster himself. It says "Al, Get your tick on!". Haha, awesome. Thanks Calton! This is style 102/104 for me.
It pours a very dark and dirty raisin brown in color with an off white head that quickly turns into a light lacing around my snifter. The nose isn't what I expected at all. I expected almost dunkel like aromas but instead you get a lot of crystal malts, which gives you a light cocoa aroma. Very interesting. You don't get too many American wheat characteristics but it is appealing. The flavors too are heavy on the crystal malts and light cocoa. You also get a slight fruity sweetness and light bitterness in the finish. Again, very interesting. It drinks pretty thicker in body but finishes light. Hard to explain but it doesn't drink like you'd assume it to for it's "weight". Overall it's a solid beer and reminds me more of a darker Irish ale or something of that sort and not a wheat beer.

I have been looking for this style to try for a while!! Pours a muddy dark brown with little light coming through. Fizzy light tan head with average retention and very little lacing.
Smell is malty with a kind of slight medicinal bitterness. Taste is similar, like a mild, sweet malty brew with a slight bit of medicinal bitterness at the end.
This beer is smooth and goes down easy. The bitterness dies down as you drink it. On the whole, an average malty brew. More flavor than most American Pale Wheat Ales.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a very dark brown color with a 1 inch head. Smell is mild, some sweetness and spice. Taste is also rather mild, some malts, spices, a touch of sweetness, rather subdued flavor. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has average drinkability. Overall a decent brew but nothing special.

Reviewed from notes:
Appearance: muddy brown, with little lacing for head
Smell: sweet malts,
Taste: chocolate, caramel, malts
mouthfeel: mild carbonation, smooth
Drinkability: overall a very nice offering from this company. Not a whole lot of brewers are using buckwheat in their beer.
Cheers,

as usual, big thanks to marvin213 for the hookup on this one!
Pours a rich dark burnt caramel hue with a pleasantly foamy buff-colored head of a solid finger. impressive retention with solid lacing. Aroma is subtle and earthy with hints of cocoa, cinnamon, dirt and burnt sugar. hints of cherries and rum. Taste is mild wheat with some bright sour cherry and caramel highlights. cocoa and toffee through the middle with a light molasses and caramel finish. Not bad... with there was a bit more flavor - it seems a touch muted and muddled. but certainly ain't bad. Mouth is bright with ample carbonation. good medium body for the style and it works nicely with the hint of tartness in the barely slick finish. All in all, not a bad dark wheat. I'd drink one again any day.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Unibroue tulip. Thin head with little lacing, color is a murky, mysterious, opalescent tudor brown. Aroma consists of notes of dark fruits, banana and brown sugar (and maybe a touch of coffee) Taste has some malty sweetness with some hints of alcohol. Some of the aromas are echoed in the taste. Not a delicious beer, but quite solid. Very drinkable.

six pack picked up at bilo mostly to use as extras but was able to drink one this past weekend to see how it carried over. poured into a pint glass and consumed on 02/05/2011.
the pour was decent with a dark brown color that yielded a big head of tan that faded quickly and only moderatly coated the sides of the glass. interesting, but nothing really to go nuts over. aroma is off chocolate, wet hay, moldy grain and campfire smoke, it just did not work for me, i wish it had, as i wanted it too. the flavor was a touch better as the chocolate died down and more of the grains and a touch of dark fruit came through which served it much better.
overall an ok beer but not even close to their best offering.

Poured from a bottle. Dark brown color. Not much in terms of lacing.
Aroma of wheat, malt and spices.
This brew is actually difficult to classify. It's a dark wheat brew. I get that. But, I think I was really expecting something else. Something more complex. Instead it was pretty average and not all that interesting.
An average amount of carbonation with a dry finish. Light-bodied.
It's drinkable. But, I probably won't go back to it.

Poured a brown body with minimal head and lace on top of a light citric and clove smell, but mostly I'm picking up some bread and sweet malt. Smooth and creamy with a light-to-medium body, a decent sweet edge of caramel and some chocolate and I pick up a touch of dough for light bready dryness. The hefe qualities, citric and spice notes, are very minimal and come across as slightly bitter. A dry finish to a beer, that while not bad, is not the most exciting.

Recieved as an extra from mikesgroove.
A - Very dark and muddy looking orange/brown beer with a 1 finger off-white head that left random chunks and stick on the sides.
S - Smells like a wheat beer, bit of citrus, caramel malts, and smoke. Actually smells quite nice.
T - Unfortunately the taste did not live up to the smell. Carmel malts, burnt malts, some sort of lactic sour, and an unpleasant phenol like quality to this one. This actually tastes kind of bad. There is a little bit of smoke that helps to hide some stuff, but not enough.
M - High carbonation, medium bodied, the carbonation is a bit too high for my liking.
D - This beer was a bit of a disappointment, and did not live up to the nose. It didn't taste good, and was hard to finish.

This poured very dark with a minimal head and smelled almost like apple taffy--I couldn't really keep my nose away, but not because I liked it. Taste is also very sweet--brown sugar, raisin, a little bit of citrus, wheat and a little bit of cocoa. It doesn't seem very deep--I was struck by the absence of an aftertaste.
The body is also on the light side, with high carbonation--this isn't a style I'm very fond of to start with, but I didn't love this beer and don't think I'll be drinking it again.

A- Pours a very deep brown. Chocolate color when held to light. Cloudy. thin head falls to a disappointing wisp.
S- Wheat, mustyness, a faint cocoa powder aroma.
T- Caramel a bit of faint tea like hop bitterness. Slight cocoa and fruit flavors.
M- Light, though not overly so in body. Very high carbonation. finishes very dry.
D- all in all a decent, though not necessarily standout beer.

A-Murky, dark cedary brown with a ring of off white head. No lacing.
S-Light biscuity aromas, vague notes of grape juice, a hint of sourness, perhaps from the buckwheat.
T-A bit sour and grainy in the front, a medium grassy bitterness and an earthy grain in the finish.
M-Light side of medium bodied, finely carbonated.
D-Decent but one probably is enough.

12oz brown bottle w/ no freshness date.
A dark wheat ale for winter, seems very fitting. Mild crackle to the head as it drops down to a wisp of lace, haze was expected with the wheat in the murky brown color. Toasted biscuit and cocoa powder with an ale twang in the nose. Very smooth and slick, medium body. Toasty and very bready with a thick side of biscuit. Mild nutty yeast, light fruitiness and a kiss of alcohol in the middle. Peppery leafy hop bitterness is light but does balance. Drying finish with lots of toasted grain flavor.
Without a doubt this is an interesting and tasty winter seasonal, worth a try.
