On the recommendation from Ninkasi Marty, so thank you. Parked around the corner and paid to park streetside, unloading my short change; nickel & diming the meter feed. Got Phil past the corner arcade but I may not be so lucky on our departure, we will see. Across the street, there’s something of a homebrew supply store on 13th, but you go down the side street, around the corner and down the alleyway to play…
Not so much an A-frame as a rounded airplane hanger ceiling wood plank & raftery, cross beams, & duct work, with slight sky light cuts. Brewroom to one side behind a ¾ wood framed paned wall, its lowers wood paneled. Dinged stainless steel honeycomb conditioning tanks to the left, and copper mash tun & brew kettle to the right. Ducts and marked pipings (steam, glycol return & supply) all about. 2 styles of growlers lining one window, and sample trays below.
Black painted concrete floorings. Drop cocoon pod lamps over the bar and in clusters out over the floor. Oh, the scariness. Drop suction cup lamps, too. 5 picnic tables across 2 rows running vertically from the bar, a long hightop table alongside the brewroom windows, and another picnic up front with 3 shortys horizontally across the way. All the seating that isn’t on a picnic bench is of mixed metal colored shortback chairs. The other side, a wall of windows and a garage door open in between with 9 shorty wide plank tables and another long varnished wood banquet table in the outside pen.
Straight wood plank bar with a fat wood tree cut top set up to the rear. You order, and then you go away, so seating for none. Grill & fryer are behind the bar, the tap row off to the far right on a stainless steel panel, and glassware shelved above. Further kitchenings behind that to the rear rear. A pair of boards from a beam mounted; one with wines, drinks, soda, tea, & coffee. The other with house & guest pours, ABV’s, IBU’s, & pricing.
Now sitting with Michael, one of the brewers. Happens sometimes when you scribble in a small book. Talking some of what they do here; the homebrew supply store up front has been for some time, but they’ve only been a brewpub for 6 months now.
20 taps on that row and 4 on an upright bar tower. 10 house beers, 6 of which I got to pick for my sampler, served on a rack shaped like their ‘cloud’ logo (Juniper Rye, 5.9%, dry & rye, juniper slightness; Leadbelly Oatmeal Stout, 5.4%, chocolatey roasty bitter; Hop Drop IPA, 6.8%, assertive, Bravo, with Chinook, Cascade, & Centennial finishing; The Tourist English IPA, 7.7%, not as sharp as the Hop Drop, no surprise there; Dr. Optic Standard Bitter, 3.7%, on both CO2 & nitro, I went with the CO2, a light bite; Dark Heart Munich Dunkel Lager, 5%, good toffee maltiness), + another 4 house beers, 2 of which I got to try (Spruce Goose Pale Ale, 4.6%, Phil ordered it and I drank his when he went for a smoke, juniper berry fruity, and good sprucey pine resin; Cloud Break Munich Helles, 4.6%, Mike pulled me a short shorty, oh Helles yes, real nice), and 2 of which I did not get to try (Zig Zag Smoke Ale, 7.3%, Oregon Logger Pre-Prohibition Lager, 5.4%), +5 guest taps; 3 local beers from town (Steelhead St Bernard’s Brown Ale, Oakshire Perfect Storm Imperial IPA & Overcast Espresso Stout), 1 from Portland (New Old Lompoc LSD), a cider (2 Towns Ciderhouse The Incider), 6 draft wines & 2 house sodas. Hop Drop IPA, Dark Heart Munich Dunkel Lager, Spruce Goose Pale Ale, & Cloud Break Munich Helles were the best of ‘em.
Sure, we’ll get the food on. I started with a cup of the cream of vegetable soup, and then went back & forth between the either the back alley burger or the BLT. Tough one. Or maybe the chicken schnitzel strip sandwich, no wait, albacore tuna tostada; I think I want that, but when my mouth opened on the ordering, ‘fried chicken cutlet sandwich’ came out. Who said that!?! Added bacon as not to insult anyone, and it came with field greens, early girl tomato, & mayo. It was an amazing goddamn sandwich; good chicky & stellar tomato bacon done right, and the mountain of fresh cut seasoned fries. Wow! Phil did the chicken schnitzel strips sandwich, with bacon & a honey mustard sauce, and potato salad sided. Looked good, but I am the king of lunch.
Chill house, nice beers, and a good variety of them, and the food was on. When in Eugene…

Just moved to Eugene, and so stopped by the first time yesterday. FS isn't the easiest place to find, but after a bit of walking around, I was able to find it (thankfully there is a sign on E. 13th ave, which indicates its location down an alley).
FS is a fairly decent size brewpub with something of a modern, minimalistic feel to the decor. The tables and chairs consist of picnic tables, in what looks like a small warehouse building with high ceilings. There's no bar area, but there is outside seating, and the brewing kettles are located behind glass to the right as you walk in. I get the impression that FS is trying to portray itself as something of a gastropub, as there's more of restaurant vibe to the place, and the menu looked pretty adventuresome.
On this particular day, they had 15 different beers on tap here. You can get a 4 glass or 6 glass sampler tray of their beers, but I went with a glass of the IPA and a sample glass of the new collaboration bock (with the brewer at Ninkasi). The IPA was pretty tasty and enjoyable, but the bock was pretty "mehhhh" in my opinion. It was pleasant enough, but had a fairly simple flavor profile I thought (some sweet malt flavor and not much else). The IPA I would order again, but not the bock.
There is no table service here. You place your order at the front counter and they give you a number. Your food is brought out around 10 minutes after you place your order (or at least it did on this particular day). It sort of reminds of the food ordering set-up at the Lucky Lab in Portland (the SE Hawthorne location). The set-up for ordering at FS is not that great, as they just don't have the space for it. The line for food winds into the dining area, making it difficult for patrons to move about or for the wait staff to deliver food. I was sitting off to the right where the line was, and I felt as if I was constantly bumping into people.
As for food, I'll visit again before I rate it. I tried the wing special this particular night (in a sweet and spicy sauce with pickled pumpkin), and I was not impressed with it. The dish consisted of a meager serving of 6 small chicken drummettes (no wings, despite the description), along with some cubed pumpkin bites. The pumpkin bites were much more interesting than the chicken, and at $9 for the dish, I'd have been embarrassed if I'd been the wait staff serving this dish. There was no blue cheese or ranch sauce for dipping, and given the lackluster nature of the sweet and spicy sauce, I think it definitely could have used it.
So, the price for my wings was a bit high I thought, but beer prices weren't too bad. My 12 ounce glass of IPA was $3.75, and most pint prices were in the $4 to $5 range. They didn't charge me anything for the sample glass of bock that I got.
The folks at my new office are really high on this place, so I'll definitely give it another chance. Need to try something other than the wings next time, obviously.
