22 ounce bomber poured into a Nonic.

A: Pours a hazy medium golden color with a 1 finger head and not much lacing to speak of.

S: Smells mostly of malts and alcohol. Almost like a malt liquor.

T: Sweet malts and not much hops to speak of. Definitely not an ideal DIPA.

M: Medium bodied with good carbonation.

O: Quite disappointing as far as DIPA's go. Not a drain pour, but not one I'd buy again.

Poured into wine goblet
A:clear dark amber. No carbination fat tan head dies kinda slowly good lacing but looks watery
S:Malty woody grain sweet fruit alcohol smell. This smell reminds me of cheap low grade beer. Like pbr.
T: soapy upfront acrid bitter grain alcohol not hop bitter. Slight malt backbone.some slight fruit esters The soapy bitterness lingers in the aftertaste.
M: thin watery slick like old hard grease
O:Wow this is petty nasty.its hasrsh bitter soapy and greasy .Even the 8.5% ABV IS not a saving grace.I would actually rather have a PBR a least it's clean not soapy or grain alcohol like. This tastes like I should be stripping my wood funiture with it.Good if you want to get drunk and don't care HOW! Or why!

With this beer you get what you pay for. The taste is ok but there is absolutely no hop aroma and very little hop bitterness. Cannot really be considered an DIPA or really even an IPA due to the lack of hops. Good price for the 8.4% alcohol but you can find much better.

Boatswain Double IPA "Twin Screw Steamer": Almost no nose. I expected some hop aroma, considering it's a DIPA. It' s a big beer at 8.4% ABV. It has a nice big malty flavor that sticks around on the aftertaste, along with a balanced hop presence and bitterness. It's just enough hop bite for my taste. At the pour, there was a good two fingers of creamy head, with excellent retention and good lace. Dark copper color. For two bucks a bomber, this is a solid brew. Don't let the low price keep you from it.

$2 a bomber?!? Expectations were not high.

It actually looks like a decent double IPA, albeit a bit too translucent.

Trouble starts at the smell. This is the only double IPA I have ever had that has virtually no hop smell at all. Frankly, it doesn't have much of an aroma at all. What little is there is all sweet malt.

Taste is all malt upfront with a slight bitter finish from what little hops must be in this.

Mouthfeel is far too thin for the style, but not outrageously bad.

Overall, you get what you pay for, apparently. Not the worst beer I have ever had, but you can't seriously call this a double IPA. I wouldn't even call it a regular IPA. more like a strong, malt forward pale ale. There are just not enough hops here for a double IPA distinction.

Pours clear pale amber with one finger of off white head. Modest lacing.
Smell is not bad just not much there. Slightly malty.
Taste is mild hops, with plenty of malts. Almost like a double Blond Ale if such a thing exists.
Mouthfeel is quite thin for the style.
Overall a tasty beer that doesn't belong in this style category. Also I never found the alcohol to be off putting.

Twin Screw Steamer opens to a surprisingly malty nose, for a double IPA, for while there is a good bit of hop aroma in here, with grapefruit rind, as well as lighter touches of pine resin, lemon, and a faint bit of dandelion stem, the malts are perhaps stronger, bringing toast crust, biscuit, Grape Nuts cereal, wet wheat, hay, grass, and a bit of toasted nut. Bits of orange, berry, and apricot fruit esters, as well as brown sugar, add further complexity. The aromas as a whole are, in addition, fairly light, regardless of hop-malt balance, and fast-fading, difficult to detect in an open bottle after a minute or two, and what’s left is mainly hay, with bits of sugar.

On the tongue, the beer proves far more flavorful than the nose let on, the initial flavors being a nice sugary, hoppy blend that brings pink grapefruit, grapefruit rind, and lesser touches of pine resin, dandelion stem, and lemon from the hops, and a nice assortment of fruit esters, including orange, berry, cherry, apricot, and even touches of melon. A large swath of brown sugar adds further sweetness, and the grains add a nice backing layer of toast crust, biscuit, and Grape Nuts cereal. In subsequent sips the sugars aren’t quite as sweet, and a more bitter, piney hop note creeps in, as well as a more earthy, hay-like, grassy malt touch. The aftertaste is more of these latter notes, with even more of a pine resin hop overtone, and lingers on the tongue for a good while. Mouthfeel is medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium to medium-high, fizzing up on the tongue.

Overall, this is a decent double IPA, though the weak nose is a strange beginning to what is otherwise a fairly flavorful beer. The flavors are good, and present in decent strength, but lack nuance, especially in the hops, which could use a few extra dimensions to bring a more full and round profile. Having said that, for roughly $2.50 a bomber at Trader Joe’s, you’re not going to get a much better flavor for the price, and the 8.4% ABV is also surprisingly high. Excellent bargain.

Poured this Imperial IPA from a bottle into a pint glass. Ale poured a hazy copper color, produced an off white head, decent retention and it left some lacing on the glass. The aroma consisted of caramel, nuts and a slight tint of hops. Medium in body, malted grain, caramel sweetness, fresh baked bread, apple, pear and some bitterness from the hops. Overall, This is not what i was expecting from an American brewed Imperial IPA- It seems as if they went for a super strong malt profile and used traditional English Hops. While some of the Boatswain Ales are decent, this one I was not a fan of.

Just because the reviews were bad, I figured I would allow this one to age for about a year to see if it would develop some redeeming qualities. Poured into a pint glass from the bottle, the beer was a copper color with a white head. As far as side of the glass go, nothing was left behind by the foam. The aroma certainly was not a reflection of a DIPA. In fact, it was all wrong. It smelled like bananas. On the initial taste, I realize the other reviewers were pretty spot-on so good job BA community. Once I got past the rubbing alcohol burn, I noticed some citrus. In fact, reminded me of the weird aftertaste left by citrus gum. I did detect some malt and the thickness was fairly impressive, allowing this to stick around on the roof of the mouth.

This the type of craft beer that non-craft beer drinkers might be able to tolerate as it is pretty nondescript. Forking over $2.99 for a DIPA, you really do get what you pay for.

Drainpour (well, not literally: I'm saving it for use in baking and booking. but even that I'm not totally sure about.)

This stuff is just dreadful. I can't even speak well to the mouhtfeel, since I hate having it in my mouth: it tastes distinctly of rotten vegetables. No hops in evidence. If others hadn't also panned it, I'd assumed I got a rotten batch.

Hideous. Awful. Terrible.

And at that, a disappointment from Trader Joe's ($2.29) since they don't normally carry true ratpiss like this.

22oz bottle poured in pint glass. Beer is a bright red amber with a thin white head. Aroma is again slightly estery. Flavor is oddly sweet. I object to the label "double I.P.A." to describe this. This is an American Strong (pale) Ale, and not a good one. I think it tastes of adjunct and perhaps corn specifically. The balance is all wrong to be any kind of IPA, and there's no distinct hop flavor of any kind, flowery, citrusy, spicy -- nothing. Just syrupy sweet and alcohol with a light carbonation and a back of the throat bitterness. 8.4% ABV and 75 IBU ought to give the brewery enough room to pack in a lot of flavor -- in fact it rather mandates flavor. This is even worse than the Boatswain "single" / American IPA. Inexplicably my expectations were higher. Oh well, it sure was cheap.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a massive three finger slightly off white head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of biscuit and bready malt, faint grassy hops. Flavor follows, dominated by a pleasant biscuit malt with slight fruit and a faint spiciness. Barely a hint of hops. Decent medium body with light creaminess. This is a hard ale to rate. It actually tastes pleasant and malty, like a light weight old ale. But it doesn't even approach a IPA let alone a DIPA in hopping. One wonders if there are shelf life issues here, although the reviews are fairly consistent. Maybe the brewery doesn't quite get the idea of an IPA. Bottom line, I really kind of like this, the malt is pleasant and there is enough flavor to well cover the alcohol. I'm going to enjoy finishing the bottle, but this is on a different planet from an IPA. Sadly the flavor and overall ratings are lower than the enjoyment rating would have been, but this says "double IPA" in big letters on the bottle, so it's gotta take the hits; but I can't give it a bad rating, because it is an ok malty ale.

22 oz Bomber served in pint glass

A: Golden dark yellow, cloudy and no head, almost flat looking.

S: Malt, sweet and a lot of alcohol. The first thing that came to mind was Steel Reserve and or malt liquor.

T: Malty, bitter and fruitiness but no balance. A lot o f alcohol but not much else.

M: Bitter and alcoholic aftertaste that lingers for a while.

O: Glad I got my curiosity out of the way since it seemed like such a great deal, but... too good to be true. Classic case of getting what you paid for. Now time to chug and move on to the next brew.

Purchased a 22 oz bomber at TJ's for $2.49

A: pours a semi-clear copper color with a solid two-finger head that disappears slowly

S: more sweet than hoppy, actually almost fruity

T: subtle and well-balanced - a little sweet at first, followed by grassy hops bite

M: medium mouthfeel (not thin) with moderate carbonation

D: very easy to enjoy all 22 ounces, even more so as it warms

After reading some of the reviews here, my expectations were low, but this is a solid DIPA, especially at this price.

Received as a Christmas gift (thanks Jason!) as it was recommended by the beer store for someone that loves good craft beer, so I was very eager to try it. Review #100.

Appearance – Pours a clear, golden amber color with a good head and a thin-medium lacing. So far, so good!

Smell – Smells more like a strong adjunct than an IPA, with a hint of mild rubbing alcohol. Not your typical DIPA, but not as bad as I probably made it sound.

Taste – Again a strong adjunct flavor with a little rubbing alcohol. Malty, but not much hoppiness for a DIPA. I really don't think this is a DIPA but that's what the bottle says. Nevertheless, it's still a decent beer.

Mouthfeel – A little thicker and creamier than your typical DIPA with medium-light carbonation. Mouthfeel is pretty good!

Drinkability – Not a typical DIPA. Very easy drinking for an 8.4% beer.

Pours a slightly hazy medium golden color with a decent sized white head with moderate retention. The aroma is quite malty for a double IPA, toffee and caramel with a bit of earthy spicy hops. Wow yeah the flavor holds the same lack of hops that the aroma did. Sweet toffee and sugary malt with a bit of earth and spice and nothing really nice. Medi8um body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Honestly where are the hops? Not a bad beer, just bland and too sweet for the style.
