Forgive me for cutting to the chase, but this one is a more than decent IPA with a unique and not unpleasant character. In contrast to a few reviews here, I would buy this one again - except that it will apparently never be brewed after this. Guess I'll cellar the couple I've got left. Who knows how they'll be in a year or two...

ALLTECH KENTUCKY RYE BARREL IPA 12/18/15
Faded bottle neck info says this dates back to the end of last May, although purchased last week.
Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Tree House stemmed tulip.
a: Clear dark amber with a half finger thick white head which receded quickly to thin surface foam and occasional spotty lacing.
s: Caramel malt and whiskey.
t; Follows the nose but the combination melds the two into something less than the sum of the parts, followed by a moderate bite which lingers on the tongue.
m; Medium or so, ok body and some carbonation tingle.
o; About what you might expect when IPA hops clash with liquor barrel aging. A clash which is less than a good IPA and also less than good barrel aged flavor. But although some throat burn develops, overall this does cover its high ABV well, and is definitely drinkable. The Stone/SN collab NxS BBA IPA was better, but neither is better than a good DIPA or a good barrel aged Scotch ale or stout, including Alltech's own very tasty version of the latter. Of course the age on this bottle may explain why the hops are less in evidence than one might expect from a DIPA. But I suspect the barrel aging had something to do with that as well.

Medium amber with a frothy carbonated light white head.
The caramel and sugar were most present to me, with a small whiff of rye and the woodiness.
I really like the initial flavor, which is a bit of Bourbon sweet , but with a bit of earthy hop to it. The finish is definitely rye, but a bit off to me. The alcohol flavor is pretty hidden and can really creep up on you if you aren't careful.
Nice carbonated full mouth feel with a warm finish.
Overall I really want to like this beer more, but the flavor finish just makes this a rather average beer compared to what it could be. Worth a try especially if you like the rye flavor.

A: Pours a glowing, ruddy amber with a thick, slowly receding white head.
S: Delicate aromas of rye bread, caramel, heavy cream, oak, spice, honeysuckle, toasted coconut, brown sugar, and mild citrus are apparent on the nose.
T: A smooth, gentle entry quickly reveals mildly turbulent notes of black pepper, oak, toasted coconut, honeysuckle, caramel, heavy cream, rye bread, brown sugar, vanilla bean, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, grass, herbs, and bitter orange. The finish is long and warming, offering complex notes of rye bread, black pepper, caramel, oak, coconut, honeysuckle, orange, lemon, and grapefruit underscored by mellow alcohol.
M: Medium-to-full in body compared to many ales of this type and smooth in texture. Carbonation is gentle and airy. Alcohol presence is surprisingly restrained and well-integrated. This does not feel like an ale of 10% abv, and as such, should be sipped slowly.
O: Comparing the information on this website with that on the brewer's, it is apparent that this beer is not classified correctly here. The strength alone should be enough to indicate that this is an American double/imperial IPA rather than a standard American IPA. I am, therefore, rating this beer as the former rather than the latter. As far as barrel-aged double IPAs go, this one is very good. It kind of reminds me of some of Dogfish Head's better brews. I would recommend it to fans of quirky and/or barrel-aged ales.

Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This nice rye ipa pours a clear reddish amber with a very nice head of light tan foam that subsides to a thin layer and thick ring with very nice lacing. Nose of bourbon barrel, vanilla, brown sugars, and subtle spice from most likely the rye. Flavors exceed the nose with sweet molasses and spicy rye flavors dancing about a strong whiskey flavor that fades to subtle vanilla and oak notes on the back. Hops show up on the back and middle with sticky goodness that is given a solid malt backbone with a good whiskey barrel note. Good mouth feel with some heat going down, but as noted by other reviews it is a creeper and hiden--especially cold. Let this beast warm up and it shows great brightness in all categories. An excellent rye "IPA" that could easily go as a moderately hoppy barely wine with bourbon barrel and rye whiskey barrel aging. Nice.
Cheers

One hot mess of a beer. Dark murky color with a faint malty smell. Metallic, ethonol taste with a sweet finish. Think bad Barleywine. Not liking this at all. Big pass on this one.
