APPEARANCE: Wow. That is one dark black pale ale. Almost no light gets through save a touch of brownish red at the very bottom of the glass. The head retention is impressive with an inch-thich, foamy head standing strong five minutes after the pour. Lacing is strong.

SMELL: It smells like coffee and hops along with something a little funky that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe raisins? Not sure.

TASTE: Far too often these black IPAs taste far too much like hopped up Porters for me. This one, however, is a true Pale Ale with solid hop bill, decent dose of caramel malt and a nice, subtle roasted malt flavor.

MOUTHFEEL: Much lighter in body than the color would suggest, but it this beer is still full of flavor. A hoppy and bitter finish cleanses the palate at the end leaving a slight coating of citrus on the tongue.

OVERALL: Pretty damn good Black Pale Ale. I'll drink this one again for sure.

(Served in a Nonic)
A- This beer pours a jet black body with microbubbles trailing up the sides and a sticky oatmeal colored head that last a bit.

S- This beer has a musty herbal hops aroma but it otherwise pretty clean

T- The slightly pungent dark woody hops mellows into a slight tart hint in the finish. There is a soft black malt bitterness that blends with some dandelion hop flavors in the finish.

M- the medium mouthfeel has a slight slippery texture in the finish.

O- The mellow flavor is more pungent that other hop flavors and the roasted black malt flavor grows as the beer opens. The tartness gets a bit stronger as it opens up aswell.

Poured in to a tulip. Somewhat translucent black body with hints of ruby. 1/4 finger head that faded quick.

Aroma was a bit citrusy, floral and hints of roasted malt. Nothing too complex, pretty straight forward.

Taste was a bit on the roasty/chocolatey side. Mild malty flavors, a bit bready. Citrus and grapefruit hop flavors that turn to a mellow bitterness.

Mouthfeel was light body, medium carb and crisp finish.

Could use a bit more malt and hop flavors.

Poured this into a pint glass, and was not disappointed with the finger sized head, and was also impressed with the density of darkness in the body. This is a murky, intriguing and extremely dark brown brew with only a hint of ruby at the very bottom of the pint. Wussies need not apply .
The smell is all fruit, raisins, rich sweet caramel, and a touch of citrus hops.
The taste is all about roasted grains, a hint of fruit, then ending with an markedly satisfying bitterness, that I was not expecting given the nose didn't detect that much hop. Guess the nose does not always know.
The mouthfeel is near perfect.
Overall, this is a great brew that should fulfill any beer geeks fetish with dark hoppy brews.

Dark brown with moderate tan foamy head with good retention. Light roasted malt and floral aroma. Taste follows with a light chocolate sweetness. Sharp biting feel.

“Black PA” makes less sense than “black IPA”. It’s really more like a slightly more hoppy porter with a strong burnt aftertaste. Ultimately, it’s pretty boring and the sharp feel is very distracting and unpleasant.
