With its classic recipe and impeccable craftsmanship, this summer seasonal is a study in delicately balanced contrasts. Up front, Pilsner malt makes a clear yet restrained statement, answered by the steady, harmonious hum of Saaz hops, traces of which linger in the dry, crisp finish.

Appearance:
Poured into a Boulevard tulip, this is one good looking beer! Rich, golden hue with a thick, porous white head. Miles of carbonation but hardly any head retention. Incredibly clear body.
Aroma:
Thick and nicely spiced. Grains and crackers. Pepper and other earthy spices. Smooth malt. Notes of honey.
Taste:
Follows the nose... Bitterness is up front. Plenty of spicing and noticeable alcohol at the end warms things up.
Mouthfeel:
Plenty of alcohol and carbonation. Heavier body than expected. Dry finish.
Overall:
I was surprised by this one... I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I walked away happy I picked this one up. Aside from the warming bite of alcohol's presence, everything else highly enjoyable.

From old, undated notes. Had this on draft.
See-through light yellow color.
No head or lace.
Fresh bread smell; undercurrent of grilled corn.
Thin mouthfeel.
Fresh bread taste; hops smack the lips.
Very quaffable; much more flavor than most in the style.

The label states Batch #1 with a ’Best By’ date of 9/2010.
Appearance: Pours out a cloudy, sufficiently yellow-hued body underneath a tall, dense, near white head with steadfast retention. Why, it’s positively elegant-looking.
Smell: An aroma evincing its 100% pilsner malt and 100% Saaz hop composition with notes of French bread dough, honey, cut apples, moist-damp grass, and spice.
Taste: Soft pilsner malt taste with a delicate flavors of sliced quick bread and wildflower honey. Medium-low sweetness. Floral, peppery, lightly grassy Saaz hops with a reserved level of bitterness. A bit of apple and standard lemon fruitiness tucked in the background. All the while, there’s an understated funky wildness to it. A bit more spiciness and sweetness remains for the amply carbonated finish. It is subtle, but it’s got an air of sophistication about it.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-high carbonation.
Drinkability: Not only a fantastic, well-balanced beer, but it puts all others in its class (save the more hop intense Sam Adams offering) to shame! I shared this with LibrarianGirl, and even she was kind enough to agree that it makes every other Imperial Pilsner appear to be peddling brewed bottles of monkey feces.

Poured from a 1 pint 9.4 ounce cage and corked bottle into a Shaker pint glass, "best by" date 02-2014, I really should pay closer attention to bottle dates.
APPEARANCE: pours a hazy, straw color with less than one-finger, white head that quickly dissipated until just a ring of bubbles remained around the glass, highly carbonated, there is almost no lacing to be seen on the glass.
SMELL: faint to the nose, bread, lemon, grass, some pepper.
TASTE: the taste follows the nose, initially sweet, apples, faint lemon, assertive hops for a pilsner, finishes clean, the 7.7% ABV is barely perceptible and has a pleasant warming effect.
PALATE: highly carbonated, medium body.
OVERALL: this is my first Imperial Pilsner, I bought an old bottle but for this style it's not a big deal, I may update my review if I buy a newer bottle and it tastes different/better, I really enjoyed this beer even though it's a year past the "best by" date, it's a pilsner on steroids, every thing you like about the style but more of it, I love Boulevard Brewing Co. and the entire Smokestack Series, I would buy this again and recommend to anyone who enjoys beer, I hope to visit this brewery when I'm in town to watch the world champion Royals.

Pours hazy straw under a fine 1” bone white head that slowly dissipates to a thick film that produces good lace. Spicy nose with light grains. Bread and grainy malt lead the palate to a drying, crisp finish with a touch of tartness. Medium body and medium to medium high carbonation. Full flavored but well balanced with a pleasant bitter hop accent on the finish.
