Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial Pilsner |  7.70% ABV

Availability: Summer. bottle (38), on-tap (3)

Notes:
With its classic recipe and impeccable craftsmanship, this summer seasonal is a study in delicately balanced contrasts. Up front, Pilsner malt makes a clear yet restrained statement, answered by the steady, harmonious hum of Saaz hops, traces of which linger in the dry, crisp finish.

Quick to non-existant head. Mild haze to its golden sunshine color. Mediocre bubbling.

Sweet, mildly toasted cereal grains and crackers. Some grass and hay hop aromas. There's also an alcoholic hint as well.

Sweet toasted cracker flavor is pretty thin. Strong alcohol presence. Finish is a bright, boozey earth flavor. Toasty malt, yeasty dryness. Boozey warmth throughout. Not bad, but seems like a par beer for an awesome brewery. Glad I tried this brew though.

From corked bottle...batch 2012-2...best by 2013-4.
Poured in Stone Impy Stout tulip glass.
Modest cork pop.
Straw yellow with big head.
Aroma of amber malts, honey, straw, saison herbs, grassy and grapefruit hops.
Significant carbonation and medium mouthfeel.
Flavors are effervescent, robust...citrus, grassy hops, peat, earth, slight flowers and herbs...let me give this 5 minutes...
OK...small head remains, aroma of wheat, grass, light lemon citrus and malt. Full flavors of lemon, grassy hops, roasted malts, some bitter notes from esters and hops. Overall rich, full bodied, lots of grassy hops, some citrus, some malts...decent but not something I would crave.

Purchased a couple of these at the end of Summer 2012. Drank one right away and put the other back because I love drinking beers out of season. Love the label - reminds me of an old classic Fender amp. The neck ring label depicts a knob turned up to 11.

Poured into my Eskimo Joe's pilsner glass from a 750ml corked/caged bottle dated best by April 2013. Fills the glass with a hazy lemony golden hue with 2-3 fingers of snow white foam. Head subsides in a few minutes and leaves scant lace.

Aromas are subdued - grassy/floral hops are more pronounced when this beer is fresh. Biscuit dough is more pronounced after a few months due to the receding hop aromas, I'm sure. Sweet lemon remains the same.

I like pilsners and this one has great flavor. Fresh crisp peppery hop bite balances out with the sweet malty biscuit dough backbone. A wisp of lemon makes it very refreshing.

Medium mouthfeel with that sparkling crisp pilsner carbonation.

This is a great pilsner that I will seek out next Summer as well. Another win for the Smokestack Series.

Presentation: Corked and caged 750ml with really cool labeling. This is supposed to be much like Collaboration no. 1, which was great. Best by April 2013. Poured into my Black Sheep half-pint snifter.

Appearance: Rich straw-gold hue with a fluffy white cap that fades just a bit quickly for my liking. Still, with medium-high levels of small-beaded carbonation, this is a pretty nice-looking beer.

Smell: A bit plain, actually. Some light malt, with some light grassy/herbal hop notes, and a bit of candy sugar sweetness. Not unpleasant, if a touch simplistic.

Taste: This gets things back on track a bit. Light grain and sugar sweetness, a bit of crisp, white-wine ester character, and some grassy, floral hops. A soft, if firm, alcoholic backbone. Delicate, but firm bitterness. Very well-balanced, with an overall soft palate.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, with soft if sprightly carbonation.

Overall: Granted, it's not fresh-fresh, so the hop character might be a bit muted compared to when this was first released, but it's well within the 'drink by' date. That being said, while this is plenty tasty, there's not a ton of depth here, though the alcohol is hidden wonderfully and the flavors are straightforward and dead-on. Tasty, yes, but not quite up to the level of the Collaboration no. 1.

Big thanks to FTowne for this bottle...

A: Pours a completely translucent yellow with about a finger and a half of frothy pure white head. The foam settles quickly, leaving a thing ring along the edges of the glass.

S: The nose is typical of a great pilsner. I get light malt, white pepper, grass, and very mild citrus.

T: The beer starts out light and sweet, with a bunch if malt up front. I get that mild pepper, and grass. In the middle I get some berry sweetness, some mild citrus, yeast, and malt. The finsih is a mix of berry sweetness and light malt.

M: Light bodied beer. Good carbonation, light on the palate with a big malt sweet note. Finsihes smooth and refreshing.

O: Good beer. Not great. I would have no idea that this Imp Pilsner is 7.7%. I'd drink it again, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Another Smokestack Series Bully Beer that doesn't disappoint.

A deep straw, pale golden color pour. Has a bit of an orange tinge to it. White fluffy heads develops to about 2 fingers then relaxes.

A quick release of corn on the aroma, but then settles to a light cracker and biscuit maltiness. Some spices and fruit comes and go, with white pepper being the most noticeable

Flavor has that corn undertone, but it doesn't play very hard, which is nice. The malt is dominant with cracker and biscuit. The hops play an important fruity/ spicy role so as to not let the malt dominate and have the corn come back around.
Sharp and dry finish, a bit boozy. Very nice
