Notes:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.
Boulevard's Love Child Series of "wild" ales are barrel-aged with such boisterous cultures as Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces. These wayward offspring can prove so complex that we employ gauges on the label to convey the intensity of three key personality traits, Funk, Sour, and Fruit, presenting a picture of the ale at the time it was released. It will change as it ages, but don't we all?
Sour characteristics come to the fore in this release, foreshadowed by the tart, winey aroma. Notes of cherry, chocolate, olive brine, and leather give way to a subtle hint of funk and a dry, clean finish.

Bought a 750ml / 1 PINT, 9.4 FLUID OUNCE bottle of this from The Red Monk in Des Moines, IA for $25 (what a steal!). Poured from the Orange/Yellow/Red Labeled bottle w/ silver stars on it into a 12oz Tulip Glass. Has BATCH NUMBER/BEST BY DATE: 2012-2, 03-2014 on the back of the label.
Aroma- Light cherries, slight funk, and then a nice barrel/aged finish. Very complexed and subtle into you really stick your nose in the glass.
Appearance- Pours a less then .5 finger head that bubbles up and then dies. Has a light amber colored body with slight haziness. Leaves no lacing behind.
Flavor- The flavor of this one is just like the aroma, complexed and tough to figure out. Sweet, tart, and light cherries are all positive in here. Almost no bitterness but rather a sweet finish mixed with a medium sour attribute. Nice!
Mouthfeel- Medium Bodied, Medium-High Carbonation, Puckers with tons of sour barnyard attributes and then a barrel note is caught on the finish. Incredible!
Overall Impression- WOW! This one has to be one of my favorites from Boulevard! The barrel aged notes I found in here were VERY impressive since this was a sour beer. Highly recommend grabbing a bottle of this and aging if you have the chance! I sure will be.

750ml, 2012-1, BBD 2014-3
Boulevard tulip
A: Hazy deep orange amber color. Initially about a half finger off white head. Good carbonation. Forms a collar around edges of glass.
S: Smells of tart cherry. Funk. Oak. Faint booze. Lactic sourness.
T: Up front you get a tickle of tartness. Not overly sour, but a nice tart touch. In the middle palate, you get some of that lactic sour cherry filling. It's mildly similar to a Flanders Red but bigger at the higher abv. Finish is dry but not bone dry. Lingering tart flavors. You also get some rounding from the barreling in oak. Traces of vanilla sweetness.
M: Medium bodied.

Poured into a Chimay Chalice
Appearance: minimal head, hazy, dark red/brown in color, low carbonation
Smell: sour mix and light fruit
Taste: cherry, oak, sour mix, and light cranberry
Mouthfeel: sweet and sour, medium-light bodied, medium carbonation but very prickly
Overall: Great sour cherry taste that has complexity with other fruit flavors. Right up there with the best domestic sours. Sour but not mouth puckering and vinegary. A bit pricey, but if I wanted an american wild ale, this would be one I would turn to.
