Notes:
Dubbel is a beer style developed by Belgian Trappists in the Middle Ages, part of a naming convention that also includes the lighter single and stronger trippel. All well and good, you say, but what's this “Nommo” business? Well, the Nommo are ancestral spirits worshipped by the Dogon tribe of the West African nation of Mali. The name is derived from a Dogon word meaning “to make one drink.” No, really. Nommo usually described as amphibious, hermaphroditic, fish-like creatures, were created by the sky god Amma, who caused them to multiply by splitting them into doubled sets of twins. Seeing a trend here? Maybe it's farfetched, but we think the story of the Nommo makes this whole enterprise a little more fun and interesting.

A-

750ml into a wine glass. Pours a deep walnut with reddish bronze highlights, minor tan colored head, minor lacing.

Aroma is classic dubbel, complex but mild. Toffee and dark fruits, just a note of anise, minor solvent esters.

Taste too stays honest to the style. Slightly diluted figs and raisins, a hint of molasses toffee, toast beginning to char. No hops to notice. Quiet spice. Light to medium bodied lively mouthfeel. Improves considerably with warmth.

A bit more peppery than a typical dubbel should be. Very highly carbonated as well, which adds to the phenolic twinge. Not a bad beer, very complex, but not quite as balanced toward the malt as it should be. Given, the bottle I had was past the "best by" date by a few months, but this shouldn't profoundly affect the phenol character, so probably safe to say that the beer has always been abut on the peppery side.

Oh yes, big big fig on this one. Strawberries, cinnamon, and allspice are also well blended into the aroma.

Light ruby in color topped by a smooth, persistant tan head. Lacing is moderate, but pretty.

Heavy on the spices with a big presence of coriander and cinnamon. Slight molasses and burnt toasted sugar taste on the finish. Very malty, but balanced as it it isn't sweet at all.

Very dry finish with lots of carbonation and a medium body. This is thoroughly enjoyable but over a period of time instead of a quick drinker.

Will pour a five+ finger cream head that fades slowly and leaving no lace. Almost clear brown/amber color, some yeast left in bottle. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Slight molasses nose, and flavor is molasses, caramel and bready. Higher ABV is hidden. Batch 2011-1 best by Apr 2012, $9.99 for a caged & corked 750ml bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, Ma.

750ml. Dark amber pour, 2 fingers of light cream colored head.

Aroma, heavy fruits, a lot of grape, some caramel maltyness.

Taste, less fruity than the aroma, though there is some grape, prune and plum. Caramel, nutmeg, light vanilla.
Finish is outstanding with some earthy roast and a spicy cocoa.

Just light of medium bodied. Not too sticky or sweet so this drinks pretty well. Also not over carbonated like some, making it feel slightly creamy to me. I'd get it again.

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip. Batch 2011-2, best by 4/2013.

Appearance: light brown hue with a nice haze. Head poured two fingers of pillowy tan foam. Perhaps a touch lighter than I normally think of a dubbel being, but still quite nice.

Smell: nice malty aroma with some mild chocolatey hints and a nice Belgian spiciness. It lacks the biscuit I find in so many dubbels -- a characteristic I don't really love. This beer has what I like and lacks what I don't -- good stuff.

Taste: dark fruits; tobacco, raisin and date, plus a little mustiness. Just the malty characteristics I like in the style. Good!

Mouthfeel: medium body with a bodacious carbonation and a great creaminess. Love it!

Overall: this is a very tasty dubbel. I'm not typically a huge fan of the style, but Nommo really rubs me the right way. Kudos!

MASSIVE off-white foamy head! Biggest head I've seen in some time! Very deep mahogany color, brewed with nice clarity. Maybe just a touch too dark without any lacing.

Heavy pepper and coriander scent. Very light for the most part, with light airy banana. Pretty light for an 8.1% Belgian.

WHOA! They brew smacks heavy spice and airy-ness in your face. A bit too thin to meet the style, and also a bit under carbonated. Belgian yeast doesn't stand out with much prominence, but it's still enjoyable.

I could imagine Boulevard could do better then this, but the offering is still nice, and enjoyable. This brew is recommended, but best enjoyed with a friend, or two. Perfect for a hot summer night.

750mL (batch 2011-2/best by 4/2012) into a chalice. Pours a crystal-clear mahogany/amber w/ a 1-finger head that settles quickly, vigorous carb.

Aroma is dark fruit - figs, raisins - sweet malt, Belgian yeast. Bready, subtle.

Taste is also bready, fruity, clean - but also a little one-dimensional.

Mouthfeel is dry, light, crisp, smooth.

Overall a good dubbel but not one I'd likely seek out again.

A: Ruby tinted brown hue with a huge tan-colored head and lacing that is average

S: Sweet and bready--caramel, raisins, brown sugar, toffee, and biscuity toasty malts; a bit on the simple side but pleasant

T: Bready with dark fruits--raisins, cherries but a real toasty, roasty bready quality makes this beer

F: Medium body and quite creamy from the yeast; great overall mouth feel

O: A good example of the style; slightly sweet, malty, slightly fruity, good stuff

1 pt 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle served in snifter, reviewed live:

A - Pours a dark, murky copper/mahogany color with three fingers of fizzy tan head. Average retention.

S - Caramel, candied sugar, toasted malt, cream, figs, sweet ethanol, and hints of chocolate. Moderate in strength, seemingly well balanced and inviting. The molasses actually comes through when you search for it. The yeast becomes more apparent as the beer warms.

T - Follows the nose fairly closely, though the flavors aren't nearly as defined. It's a bit muddy. Sweet candied sugar and molasses dominate the palate, with the delicate fruit and yeast notes taking the back seat. It finishes boozy and a bit bitter. I'm a little disappointed with this one after the aroma built it up so much.

M - Medium bodied and oddly dry. The mothfeel doesn't support the beer's flavors at all.

D - It's not bad, though you can easily find better and for less expensive. The ABV is very present (which isn't a bad thing, necessarily) though it makes it a true sipper. I'd probably pass on it in the future.

750 mL bottle tried 20 Nov 2011. Served in the 0.4 L Herren Pils snifter.

Medium light brown head, medium carbonation. Clear dark reddish ruby brown. Aroma is sweet and syrupy, plums, raisins, earthy, light ethanol. Taste is a bit lighter than the aroma, seems somewhat muted. Some raisins, dark fruit. Medium body, alcohol is fairly warming. Improves a bit as it warms. A says a bit port like but washed out. Slightly burnt/bitter aftertaste.

Overall not bad but expected a bit more from Boulevard.

A: clear, copper/claret color, deep rocky off-tan head
S: medium nose, more spritzy CO2 and yeast then anything else, became maltier over time, burnt malt, some EtOH
T: well-made, true to type, good roasted malt, yeast noticeable with subdued hops but balanced
M: a bit earthy and grainy, not intense

From notes:

P: Tan cappuccino head on a deeply dark body with amber lighting. Transparent and bubbly with good retention.

S: Sweet candy malts, dark fruits, roasted caramel and bananas on top of chocolate covered cherries and amaretto.

T/M: Molasses sweetness, musty with timid earthy hops on a dry heavily carbonated body. Drenched in cinnamon, clove and other spices delivering a peppery bite. Tongue numbing with grains, apples and alcohol lingering on the chalky finish.

O: Good but maybe a tad too carbonated. This beer is truly enhanced once the brew warms. Another solid delivery from boulevard.

Thanks to JeepCop for this beer...

A: Pours a murky, hazy, redish-brown with about a half finger of light khaki colored head. The foam fades fairly quickly leaving a frothy ring along the top of the beer.

S: It smells of clove, ginger, lemon, dirt, orange, green banana, and yeast. There is some serious malt in the background, but it's hard to pick out with all the dominating scents in this brew.

T: The taste follows the nose. It starts out spicy with some clove and dirt. The belgian yeast is paramount. There are big notes of ginger and unripened banana.

M: Medium bodied beer. The carbonation is a bit high for this beer. The flavors linger on the palate, but they are a wacky mix of dirt and funk.

O: I'm really disappointed with this beer. I've never been a fan on Dubbels, and this beer seems pretty standard for the style. I had moderate expectations for this beer, but this is the first Boulevard beer that I've ever disliked.

Quick head and foam for a dubbel. OK bubbling, but a nice ruby and caramel color.

Yeasty fruit with a little dark sweetness from both the yeast and molasses. Heavily toasted biscuity malts make up the backbone of this aroma.

The flavors, like the aroma, are also layed over the solid foundation of heavily toasted, biscuity malts. That being said, the yeast and molasses stands at the forefront of teh flavor profile. From the front to the back.

Palate is alittle thin and chalky. But still a pretty good beer overall!!

Poured this into a tulip and the beer produces a four finger thick light tan colored head, and the body is dark copper in color with haze.

The aroma is root beer and cola mixed, a little metallic and pair as well.

The taste is a little smoky and sweet with a slight cola quality, and is very earthy as well.

Feels full in body and fully carbonated. Dry to the palate and not too warming in the end.

S-dark bready malt, caramel, yeast, and bit of a boozy soaked raisins smell

T-taste is very pleasant. Dark bread, light raisins, cinnamon, and caramel

I'm drinking an entire bomber of this tonight because I just passed my Air Force fitness test. If anyone has a problem with this, they can kiss my lily white ass.

Date: Cut off on the edges of the paper... those rat bastards!

Corked and caged, popped, and poured into a Delirium Tremens snifter.

A: Poured a shit, sewer brown, with a tightly wound mildly off-white head that stuck around throughout the whole session.

S: Understated, yet the brown sugar/high pitched candy sugar notes are there.

T: Cinnamon and banana upfront, with the star anise in the distant distant background. Malty and not too sugary, with a good bit of Belgian funk as well. Really nice!

M: Spritzily carbonated and then some. The lacing was lots to moderate and the sugar content was muted by the malt backbone.

O: Hell, this wasn't amazing, but I'd drink it again. Really nice dubbel... one of my favorite Belgian styles.

A- This beer pours a deep pretty dense brown body with a slight orange hue to it and is clear when lit shines through. There is a thick sticky head of light beige and a gentle carbonation swirling up the sides of the glass

S- The soft brassy hint of wheat fades to brown malt with a toasted biscuit malt character and some cardboard qualities to it. There is a yeasty ester quality in the finish.

T- The dark fruit hints meld to a dry toasted malt flavor that has a blend of spice character with hints of cinnamon and perhaps anise when it warms. There is an abbey yeast flavor that grows aswell and a spicy phenol in the dry finish.

M- The medium-light mouthfeel has a tight fizz and an alcohol prick in the finish.

O- There are interesting characters to it but not much depth and things get washed together as the beer opens up. It takes on a bit of an herbal quality that is a bit odd aswell.

Poured into a Smokestack tulip.

It's a hazy bronze with a cream colored head. The head is like a foam carpet. Decent lacing.

It's got a lot of raisin and some spice in the smell.

There is a big Belgian sugary sweetness. There is a nice spiciness in the back. The bittering hops leave a grassy aftertaste.

It's got a very soft feel. It's medium bodied.

750 ml, poured into 2 pint glasses....I gotta finda something beyond pint glasses.

Pour is brown, murkier as the beer sits in the glass. Lots of head, little retention.

Smell is highly spiced, some bananas and plenty of belgian yeast.

Taste offers a bit more fruit and sugars. Banana, dates(?!), and maybe some citrus come to mind. Not so much spice, but it's good and complex.

Mouthfeel is highly carbonated as is the sit with most Dubbels. Thickness is medium.

Good beer. Would definitely get again.

A: Burgundy, tan head. Not much lacing, but there is half a finger of head that lingers.

S: Grape bubblegum, figs, faint vinegar, black cherries.

T: Lightly toasted malts, brown sugar, molasses, licorice, rum raisins, with a minty aftertaste. Minimal hops, just a tad of herbal-y bitterness.

M: Effervescent, not too heavy, velvet-y feel going down the throat.

O: A pretty good dubbel. Not the best I've had, but worth the money spent.
