Notes:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Poured into a pint glass.
The body is a beautiful rust color which thins out a little near the sides of the bottle. An aggressive pour yields a good amount of light tan head which leaves a creamy film on top of the body and has some delicate lacing.
The smell is, of course, led off and dominated by a dry whiskey auroma. This dry, woody smell is bold but is complimented very well by a smooth and sweet side that has hints of toffee.
A very woody and rye taste to the beer. The alcohol is very present along with oak, toffee and vanilla.
The mouthfeel compliments and helps the beer perfectly. It is a thinner body, with a slight amount of carbonation, but it is very smooth. It seems to emphasize the different flavors of the beer but without ever getting in the way.
The beer goes down so easy, especially for its high ABV. It seems like a refined and mature beer to add to Boulevard's illustrious Smokestack series.

thanks merc for cracking out this vintage 2012 brew
The beer pours a dull, hazy orange/red amber with a thin halo of tan head, loose lacing, and plentiful sediment. The nose is buttery whiskey barrel aged caramel sweetness, slightly boozy, with a touch of rye. The taste is definitely whiskey barrel forward with a generous amount of rye spice in the finish. It's medium bodied, barleywine-esque, slightly spice, heavily barrel aged and boozy (but not as much as the BBQ). Wow, what a good beer that presents huge barrel aged sweetness along with excellent rye spice. It's more of an evening sipper at 11% and with huge rye spice, but very tasty and impressive. I'd certainly try this beer again.

2012 Bomber poured into snifter glass.
A: Reddish/Mild Orangish Hue, Passes Some Light, Off White Head Ring, Some Lacing
S: Rye Bourbon Barrel Sweetness, Honey, Rye
T: Rye Bourbon, Honey, Rye, Mild Sweet Bread
M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet, Mildly Boozy
Overall, you really get the rye barrel taste and the rye grains seperately but they mesh well together too. Solid.
