Notes:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

P: Pours a highly carbonated tawny red under a cloud of dense frothy khaki head that settles quickly to a thin swirly wake.
S: Nose is big and boozy. Cherry coke and whiskey, sour mash, brown sugar, dry oak, but mainly potent whiskey.
T/M: Taste follows the nose but delivers a healthy dose of spiced rye bread, hidden behind the alcohol is a subtle earthy and herbal hop bitterness and pleasant warming. Body is full with stinging carbonation that delivers a super dry finish that leaves my mouth slightly numb.
O: Jack and coke anyone? This reminds me of high school when I used to mix whiskey with cherry coke. Despite the hearty dose of booze this is really quite good. It has much better character and complexity that a mixed beverage. The drinkability is really grand considering the ABV and the encombesment of alcohol. I would like to age one and see how it develops.

2013 Bottle
A-amber with three fingers worth of creamy head that sticks to the glass
S-the smell is pretty strong of sweet malt, caramel, light dark fruits, and bourbon
T-taste matches the smell well, sweet caramel malt, spicy rye, and a nice oakyness round it out.
M-medium to full body, medium carbonation, finishes a bit hot
Overall this might be my favorite beer so far from Boulevard, a nice blend of flavors and while the alcohol is present it is still manageable

(Served in a tulip glass)
Batch 2012.2 bottle # 14071
A- This beer pours a hazy dense glowing caramel brown body with a sea of racing microbubbles colliding with a thick beige head that last and last sticking to the glass with each sip.
S- The sweet malt and spicy alcohol lead to a paper straw and then green oak barrel aroma with some caramel malt in the finish. There is a soft fusel note and the aroma keeps growing as it opens.
T- The rich dry spicy malt has some buttery caramel flavor with a circus peanut yeast ester growing as does the rich caramel wood finish. The gentle sweetness in the finish is cut by the slight fusel alcohol taste that lingers. Some nice vanilla notes pop through as the depth and flavor grows.
M- The medium mouthfeel has a nice alcohol warmth that grows along with the flavor.
O- The nice sweetness of malt is supported by spice earthy rye and alcohol with a full barrel flavor. This is a great sipper.

Bottle at The Bier Garden, Asheville, NC
A: The beer is hazy amber in color. It poured into a snifter glass with a finger high off white head that gradually died down and left a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Strong aromas of whiskey from the barrel aging are present in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste is a little boozy and has flavors of rye whiskey along with notes of rye malts and associated hints of spiciness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some warming from the alcohol.
O: Considering its strength, this beer is very drinkable because the alcohol is well hidden from the taste. The only drawback is that it might be perceived as a little one dimensional with the use of both rye malts and rye whiskey.
Note: 2013 vintage
