The beer pours a darker murky brown with a one inch light tan head sitting on top. There is pretty good head retention.

The aroma is decent. There is a light citrusy note and a much more tame rye note than I would have expected. It has a very simple grain value and it's nice.

The taste is so mellow and I'm actually kind of bummed by that. There is definitely the presence of a barrel here with some vanilla notes. There is a very simple rye presence that is much less edgey than most rye ales I've encountered. It's interesting.

The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and lightly carbonated with a very fine and gentle bubble.

Overall it's a solid beer. I"m not sure how I feel about it quite yet but it's certainly interesting. I'm not positive I would revisit this beer nor would I put it at the top of Boulevards offerings. I do believe however that Boulevard is one of the best midwest breweries available.

thanks merc for cracking out this vintage 2012 brew

The beer pours a dull, hazy orange/red amber with a thin halo of tan head, loose lacing, and plentiful sediment. The nose is buttery whiskey barrel aged caramel sweetness, slightly boozy, with a touch of rye. The taste is definitely whiskey barrel forward with a generous amount of rye spice in the finish. It's medium bodied, barleywine-esque, slightly spice, heavily barrel aged and boozy (but not as much as the BBQ). Wow, what a good beer that presents huge barrel aged sweetness along with excellent rye spice. It's more of an evening sipper at 11% and with huge rye spice, but very tasty and impressive. I'd certainly try this beer again.

2012 Bomber poured into snifter glass.

A: Reddish/Mild Orangish Hue, Passes Some Light, Off White Head Ring, Some Lacing

S: Rye Bourbon Barrel Sweetness, Honey, Rye

T: Rye Bourbon, Honey, Rye, Mild Sweet Bread

M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet, Mildly Boozy

Overall, you really get the rye barrel taste and the rye grains seperately but they mesh well together too. Solid.
