Lately it occurs to us that if, back in 1989, you planned on starting a brewery in the back of your carpentry shop, you'd been wise to seek out someone like Harold “Trip” Hogue. A collector of ancient Volvos, Trip was well qualified for the make-do engineering required to coax recalcitrant equipment out of retirement and into making the first Boulevard beers. Today, he is our longest-tenured employee. We offer this rich, golden Tripel in grateful tribute to dedication, everywhere.

From a 750 ml into a tulip.

A-The brew has a light golden color. The three finger head was relatively short-lived, but a few visible streams of carbonation kept it from disappearing completely.

S-I picked up some green apples, some grains, and quite a bit of alcohol spice. There is a little yeasty funk, too, but the funk is different than most...and I can't quite put my finger on it.

T-The taste follows the smell pretty closely with a nice, alcoholic spice being the primary characteristic for me. I did not get a lot of fruit and there was very little hop character. A little on the hot side for me.

M-Mostly dry, medium bodied with a pretty solid hit of prickly carbonation.

O-This tripel was not what I was expecting and I'll admit that it took me until the second glass from the bomber before I began to enjoy it. There was the typical tripel spice profile, but I missed a lot of the banana and yeast flavors that I was expecting. Nevertheless, it was complex and interesting enough to keep drinking.

12oz bottle into snifter

A – Pours a bright vibrant orange with a strong white head. Leaves nice, strong lacing. Carbonation is strong and there is some sediment apparent here.

S – Smells strongly of belgian yeasts, malts are pale and a tad muted pale. Floral notes abound, with lemon, wildflower honey, dried apricots, anise, cinnamon. Complex here, each sniff gives way to new notes.

T – Initially bright, the notes of lemon and yeast come through. Eventually leads to a peppery and herbal body. Finish is long and bright again, with big citrus and yeasty notes.

M – Great here, just fizzy and light enough to aide in bringing the full depth of flavors to the forefront. Overall quite dry, crisp, and lingering.

O – Stellar. I don't much care for Boulevard's everyday shelf offerings, but the Smokestack series is truly a remarkable step up. For $2.50 a bottle this is a winner through and through, and would have no problem standing toe to toe with other world class brews in the same style.
