Notes:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

A: Huge head. Brown with loads of carbonation. Awesome retention and lacing.
S: There is a huge amount of fruity spices and sweetness.
T: Tons of strong flavours, the sweetness and alcohol are very prominent. The alcohol eventually fades and a sweet fruity taste comes through.
M: Thick and creamy.
D. somewhat.

Opened this up which was corked, I hate opening corked bottles, this one foamed out all over me. Oh well
Pourd these into my goblet, it made a nice 2 inch head that went away pretty quickly. Did not notice any lacing at all.
It smelled citrusy, very fruity, like berries and banana bread, a hint of yeast.
First thing to hit my mouth was a nice sweet fruity taste, then a hint of nice spices.
Mouthfeel felt a little bitter with a noticable tatse of alcohol and carbonation
Drinkability was pretty high for this one. Would have it again.

Poured a dark hazy brown with a thick rootbeer float like head, lasted forever.
Has a sweet candi syrup smell with some yeasty spice and brown sugar.
Nice thick dark fruit and chocolate malt up front with strong hints of cedar and brown sugar. Has a nice long earthy and spicy hop finish with a lingering bitterness that is a nice compliment to the initial sweetness.
Mouthfeel is super carbonated and a touch warm, very creamy and full.
A very nice job by Boulevard.

Pours dark coppery red. Head is a massive, beige in color with plenty of intricate lacing. Fine tan yeasty sediment settles on th bottom of the glass.
Aroma is sweet and sugary with a pleasant fruity earthy quality. Yeast brings spices and a light medicinal quality. Alcohol is present, but understated.
Taste is rich caramel malt and rum soaked dark fruit. Yeasty spices are understated compared to the nose, but clove, coriander, and white pepper add complexity. A touch of powdery cocoa. Earthy hops, and a dry cedar quality bring balance to the generous sweetness. Finish is yeasty with lingering floral hop.
Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth
A surprisingly good Belgian style quad. Flavor is full, rich and fruity. Recommended.

Caged/Corked
Batch 68058
Revisted: 28 Jul 10
Aged 2 Years
Again poured into my Westy glass a very nice cloudy brown color, very nice carbonation, very nice one-finger creamy tan head, with alot of nice creamy/sticky lacing and some small islands. The nose is malty, with some yeast tones, figs, plums, raisins. The taste is sweet, malty, with some yeast, nice touch of dark fruit. Medium body, the alcohol is hidden very well with this one. Very drinkable, this one has aged very nicely, very tasty.
Thanks goes out to bort11 and raverjames for this brew.

Pours a dense and foggy amber color with a one inch light tan head sitting on top. Decent retention and no lacing.
The nose is ok. Notes of banana and spice confront you. some dark fruit and tons of booze also appear.
The taste is not that great. Dark fruit and banana are easily evident. The spice is there, but in small doses. This one finishes really boozy. It gets worse as it warms. I suppose it would be a cellar candidate though. There is definitely room to tone down the heat and carbonation.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and overly carbonated. It's hard to even move it in your mouth without all turning to foam. Too much tingle isn't fun to drink! Obviously as it sits open and warms the carbonation mellows a bit making for a more enjoyable time
Drinkability is moderate. The flavors are decent, but the alcohol is very and apparent as well as the mouth being overly carbonated. I was really hoping for something great out of this one, but I"m slightly disappointed. Perhaps the Tripel and Saison will be better?

Batch Number: 68100; Sampled September 2008
A soft pour produces an initial four-finger thick head that fills my 25cl tulip glass and then proceeds to mushroom up two fingers past the rim of my glass and slightly overflow, but only just barely. The head is a light tan color with a densely packed head. The beer is an amber color that is on the light side from your average Quad and shows a brilliantly clear, cranberry-orange stained, dark copper color when held up to the light. Spicy aromas of woody pepper and mature ginger are almost immediately joined by tart notes of tamarind, sour plum and a lactic like note. I expected a lot more concentrated, rich malt notes here, but instead this seems to have been replaced by this light, but substantial tartness.
Lightly sweet flavors are offset towards the finish by an herbal sage like note that is light but fairly distinct. The sweetness tastes of and accentuates flavors of plums, a filtered tamarind note and a light raisin note. The beer finishes with a warming alcohol note that at times can be overly hot with higher alcohols; these notes accentuate a spicy finish that has a peppery bite as well as a hint of plastic-like phenolics and a light tongue numbing clove note. Not nearly as tart as the aroma suggested, which is as I suspected for some reason, but it still does have a touch of tartness that is likely just contributed by the yeast strain used. This is actually quite dry for a Quad (this also likely accentuates the perceived tartness), with a medium body that is on the light side for a Quad.
A second pour easily produces just as much of a voluminous head. As the beer has warmed the aroma has picked up a finish that has a lot more toasted malt aromatics to it; biscuit like with a nice crushed grain character. This is a pretty good beer, the only real flaw is that it can get awfully hot in the finish, but this is only at times so doesn't kill the beer.

Poured a deep apple cider amber with a thin film head that's providing an infinite amount of bubbles...oh and no lacing.
Several different dark fruits with a hoppy aroma and a slight booziness.
Loaded with flavor, dark fruits along with malts and hops. A very active alcohol content, not overpowering but definitely present.
Mouthfeel is light with semi high carbonation. Tingles the palate with every swig.
Very good brew from Boulevard. A tad high ABV which hurts drinkability but nothing a couple buddies can't cure. Possibly the best that Boulevard has to offer and that's no small claim. Thank you Boulevard for making me proud to enjoy a local product.

Pours a reddish brown until back lit when is glows with a bright rich looking orangish amber with some haziness. This Quad looks so inviting that this mammoth head is hard to wait on,but it actually deflates in a timely manor leaving huge webs of lacing covering the entire Duval snifter it's served in. Smells like straight up maple syrup, dark fruits and alcohol. This is delicious,Quads are not at the top of my favorites list, but this one is winning me over! Tastes are dark fermented fruits(raisins) and alcohol with subtle yeasty character, syrup and honey sweetness finish off this boozy beast. Full bodied and warming to the tongue encourages sipping, not to mention a ABV that I would have guessed to be even higher than 10.5. This one is an stunner from start to finish, pure darkness at its best.

I split this big ass bottle with a few beer buddies at the Brewhaus.
A - Orange tinted brown ale topped with a massive (four finger plus) head of luscious foam. Tons of really nice lace sticks all over the glass. Muddy, cloudy, dark, and evil looking. Nice!
S - Maple syrup, honeycomb, and dark fruits. Prunes, dates, raisins, and dried apricots with honey drizzled on top. Smells really hoppy; particularly for the style. Nothing wrong with hops!
T - Eggo waffle malt notes, with tons of really nice dark fruit...bordering on overripe. Honeycomb, dank hops, and boozy alcohol. Tastes and smells like a really nice cognac...grapey, fruity, but deep luscious and alluring.
M - Full bodied, but spry due to the tight alcohol attenuation and aggressive hop profile. Moderately carbonated, hoppy, and boozy on the finish. An excellent nightcap!
D - This is an outstanding beer from a brewer that I've grown to love. Boulevard is making some good stuff these days, and this is just about the cream of the crop.

I was treated with this brew by my beer buddy imacoug....many thanks. We poured from the 750 ml bottle into chalices.
A: It poured a deep red body with a tall sticky head that lingered for a long time. It left surprisingly thick lacing.
S: It had aromas of dark fruits (raisins, plums and figs), sweet malts and Belgium candy.
T: It had a smooth malty base rich in flavors of caramel, sweet dark hard candy and dark fruits. The fruits dominated early followed by a nice spicy bite and creamy dark yeasty flavors.
M: It is a full bodied beer with a creamy, smooth feel in the mouth and hints of spicey and moderate corbonation. It finished warm and clean iwth little aftertaste.
D: I love quads and this is a quad to love. It fits well in the Belgium tradition. It is a bit much for a session beer but a wonderful sipper and great night cap.

Appearance: Deep cooper with a thick, no huge, foamy white head. The head settles down after a little while but pours almost like Duvel. (Which is appropriate, since I was pouring it into a Duvel glass). The head settles down put I had to pour back and forth between glasses to get the bottle poured. A little, white ring remains well after the head is gone and the beer is still being enjoyed.
Smell: Ripe fruit and sweet malt give a fantastic aroma with hints of biscuity malts. After notes of brandy and belgian candied sugar.
Taste: Malty fruit like a thick crusted fruit turnover. Raisins, malt, and caramel finish and linger on the palate.
Mouthfeel: warm and silky smooth. Coating and thick without being cloying.
Drinkability: Fantastic. I wish I had brought three or four bottles of this back instead of one. DAMN YOU TSA and your liquid restrictions. Damn you US Air and your $15+ per checked bag! Damn you liquid and glass for weighing so much!

A: deep brown in color with highlights of orange. lots of visible carbonation rising quickly to the top sprouting a massive bubbly almond colored head that almost overflows out of the glass yet mysteriously manages to defy gravity and physics and stay within it's bounds.
S: deep fruity smell of green apples, raisins, purple grapes combined with a medium heavy brown sugar malting and a kick of alcohol on the nose near the end. This is going to be epic.
T: Taste is a massive explosion of sugary malt, dark fruity flavor with a slight acidity (green apple?) and a noticeable, but not overwhelming, alcoholic bite. Nice throat warming as it slides with ease down into your belly. This is on par with some of the best Belgian Quads I've had.
D: Pretty damn good and easy drinking. Great flavor, great aftertaste and even though the ABV is on the higher end it's almost barely noticeable...but will limit how much you can drink.

Explosive uncorking with a sea-spray of beer and head. What a show. Nice cork - soft at the beer end and harder at the outside end. Yeast-free bottle.
Sugary nose full of ripe fruit, chewy malt, bright hops, and some chalky yeast. Very chewy malt indeed. Rich, supple roast teeming with sticky and dark characters. Chocolate, cherry. Smells like it will be syrupy and alcoholic. Smells wonderful.
Pours a dirty brownish red color, quite murky, with an enormous head that's alive with effervescence and energy. All that excitement was too much for it and it flew away like a hot air balloon leaving me with a sad little dirty brown beverage.
With first glass I am taken back by the tactile orgy of aesthetic wonderment this beer has imposed on me. Sheer tastiness of the best kind. Delightfully malty. A thick, syrupy, and sticky mess of a mouthfeel along with a little alcohol heat bring to mind whiskey or Old Ale. Dark fruit, ripe cherry, pear, and a little melon. A little spicy and phenolic, tad peppery, and a little funky. Floral, herbal hops are less pronounced than in the nose.
By third glass crisp alcohol heat grows with warmth. Becomes sharper and more bitter.
By sixth glass I've had my fill and the alcohol is getting the better of me (granted, the sixth glass is a small one). Still, I'll make sure not to follow any well-dressed men home.

Very cool looking bottle courtesy of hwwty4, thanks again!
Pours a dark amber color with a HUGE head. Tons of carbonation visible.
Aromas are of dark fruits, mostly cherries, some oak, and a bit of booze as well.
Taste is boozy and dry. Some light fruit flavors, faint cherries, a bit red wine like, oaky, with some floral notes. Finish is dry, with a bitter mineral like hops, booze, and a bite from the alcohol. Overall the flavor profile is good, but a bit light.
Decent mouthfeel. Even though the carbonation is really visible, it's not overpowering, and helps add a little bit of a zing to this one. But this seems to lack that "thick" feel that I notice in Belgian Quads.
Drinkability is good. This is a nice "lighter" tasting quad. Doesn't have that thick feel and strong flavors that I usually taste in the style. But this is a nice beer, that is surprisingly easy to sip.

A- Pours a dark tan with a 2 finger head into my Boulevard Smokestack chalice.
S- Fruity.
T- Very sweet without being overpowering. Might I add that this is quite delicious.
M- Thick and chewy for an ale looking beer.
D- At 10.5%, I assumed this wouldn't be too drinkable. I was wrong. If I had more, I'd drink more. Very well done.
Score one for Boulevard Brewing Co. I've always been a fan, but they've outdone themselves this time.

Sorry folks, I'm not a poet, but I believe Boulevard has a hit here. 750 ml bottle, corked and caged, batch #S8058.
Problem around here is we don't get many Belguims, so when one comes along, we have to try it.
Very very tasty, somewhat smooth, alot of carbonation at first, like a coca-cola until it settles. SO tempted to swirl the bottle to mix up the goodies on the bottom.
Now it's time to head back to the store and buy the IPA.

750ml bottle, corked and caged, thanks to Grub! Its name a reference to Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Watchman of the Tower' - a recommended tale for those who enjoy the drink.
An anemic terracotta shade and khaki head make for a brilliant colour scheme. These tones of clay ceramic and tapioca white, neither all that attractive on their own, pair together perfectly; they must have been made for each other. I'm quite curious to take a taste.
Boulevard phenomenally captured the Belgian styles of saison and tripel in this same 'Smokestack Series' release, and judging by the looks of things, they've done so as well with the quad. Although its colour may be a tad light, the head is right on for style: mildly creamy, responsive, everlasting, and giver of lacing.
The aroma contains a soft spiciness with gentle notes of ginger and caramelizing brown sugar. All notions of spice are most likely derived from the yeast and it would seem they've chosen an appropriate (and good) one. The smell indicates this is a beer you'll have to enjoy by taking your time with it.
The body is very malty with plenty of sticky sweet taste and a strong hit of something spicy and slightly boozy. It is lacking a little in the dark fruits (plums, raisins, dates) found in other quads. It still manages to taste pretty good and full of flavour to spite this.
Something in the taste imparted a slight port/sherry like character and tannic grape flavour. Perhaps it is the sweet sugar or perhaps the excessive heat; the alcohol is well stitched in to the makeup but nevertheless, at least fresh, this tipple is a warm and spicy one.
Although this seemed at times a strong dubbel, I'm again impressed that Boulevard has so successfully understood and conceived their Belgian ales true to style. This came on a little spicy and a little strong, making it a good candidate for aging, and definitely a beer that would pair wonderfully with a number of traditional Belgian dishes (Flemish stew, perhaps?)

bort11 hooked me up with this one as part of Brews N Tunes 3. thanks tim!
750ml bottle, corked and caged. sampled august 9/08.
pours deep red-brown with a big yellowish tan head. the head drops fairly fast and leaves only a few spots of lace.
aroma is good. white bread. cracker. nice dark fruit. date and fig. bit of raisin. light alcohol. earthy and slightly floral. touch of yeasty spice. hint of grain.
taste is good. light warming alcohol. caramel, toffee, and a bit of butterscotch. light dark fruit - date, fig, raisin. bit of light yeasty spice. whole wheat bread. cracker. low bitterness level. a bit earthy. leans more toward the spicy side than the fruity side, but still nice.
mouthfeel is good. just over medium body. medium-high carbonation level.
drinkability is good. the carbonation helps lighten things up a little, but also carries just a touch of sting. not quite balanced, but i still like it.

Big thanks to grub for sharing this after a long brewday. 750 ml corked bottle.
Pours a cloudy amber orange, pretty vibrant colour, medium sized off white head forms, retains a pretty solid layer, good retention, a bit of lace when I swirl it, looks good. Smell is sweet and sugary, apples and pear, lots of fruit, cherry, biscuits, alcohol, caramel/honey sweetness, yeast, nice. Taste is neat, caramel, nuts, very bready, sweet grainy beginning, yeast, some iron, honey, butter, earth, bit of spicy bitterness, nice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium to high carbonation, alcohol is pretty well hidden. An interesting take on the quad, don't totally get it but definitely a drinkable beer. Thanks Russ!

750 received in from Bort11 in the "Fight Club BIF" ... I also have one in the cellar from jhammerly... huge thanks to Tim and Jimi. The bottle has been sitting in the fridge for a couple weeks.. tonight is the night.. enjoyed immensely from my Boulevard Goblet that is also courtesy of Bort11... here we go.
2 finger head takes forever to die back.. minutes later it is still a sand dune of foam... looks pretty for sure.. the brew is dark chestnut .. but perfectly clear ruby when held to my desk light.
Aroma is fruity and spicy.. missing some maltiness... a little bit of caramel and toasty qualities but missing something.. maybe a taste will change that... nope.. estery and fairly sharp.
Flavor mirrors the aroma but with quite a bit more fruit.. cherry and plum come to mind immediately.. fusel alcohol is fairly present but a minor distraction. A little too sweet for my liking, but again, a minor flaw... rum raisins are a lingering finish spiked with a spicy phenolic nature. Mouthfeel is pretty much spot on and so is the smooth carbonation.
Overall, it could probably use some more time in the bottle. I like it, but don't love it. It is, however, a brew that if I had access to, I would buy a case or two of to see how it ages over the next year or two.. lord knows I buy lesser brews by the case solely on the hope that they are going to get better.
I probably trade for a few more of these while they are still available. Big props to Tim and Jimi.. Jimi is a fantastic trader, and Tim punched me square in the tongue with this one.

A: deep brown with fluffy cream colored head that recedes into a swirling creamy layer.
S: sweet, carmelized suger, dark rich fruit, estery, with definate caramel. Complex and inviting.
T: layers of sweet flavors, ranging from brown suger to caramel/toffee, with a touch of chocolate, to macerated fruits. Also booze. Minor bitterness melds well and mildly balanced sweetness. Finish has a port wine taste. Gets better as it warms. Delicious.
M: balance of rich and smooth with carbonation is excellent. Alcohol warmth prickles mouth as this delicious elixer slides around.
D: at 10.5% abv, I elt the weight of this big brew but surprizingly drinkable. Better paired with food. I had chocolate with it. Savored slowly, it's an incredible beer.

Deep glowing fog of burgandy with a ruby tint to its body when up to a strong light. Emensely thick and tall head of yellowy tanned foam bursts to top it and sits well for a while before fading to an always present amount. Big droppily patched and broken sheets of lace stick across the goblet.
Big and booming aroma of berries and dark sweet fruits flow out of the bottle right during the pour. Very pleasing to the nostrils...Once settled in the glass this has a very nice nose of dark berry and rum soaked fruit bread. Date, fig, raisin, candied sugars that are all very rounded and sugary sweet. Quite nice!
Taste nearly mirrors what the smell delivers with an even better display within its reflection as a whole load of dark, sweet, chewy, sugary, robustly full flavor takes place with a nice perk and ease of girthy smooth breadyness and carbonated chewyness. Only slightly heated after the swallow this has alot to offer in a well toned and flavorful array of dark sugary fruity stuff that sticks and chews with dates and figs, flirts with raisin, dark orange, berries, and cherry. Dances with sugary spices that tantalize and dance away a fine lasting deep seeded taste across the finish.
Full bodied and chewy with a smoothly dark setting of rich carbonation. Finishes with a bit of fever and warmth and a whole bunch of pitch within its taste and balance.
Wow, a surprisingly solid and well mannered Quad that looked, smelled, felt, and tasted like something right out of the Belgian realm from which it is to emulate. Great job by Boulevard on this one!
