Notes:
The intense flavors of dark-roasted malt in Boulevard’s rendition of the classic English porter are perfectly balanced by a generous and complex hop character. Bully! Porter’s robust nature makes it the ideal companion to a variety of foods, from seafood to chocolate.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
A: Pours a deep brown with ruby and purple highlights. The sandy colored head is very creamy and pillowy. Excellent retention, the head doesn't budge an inch. Sheets of lacing paint the sides of the glass.
S: Floral and citrus hop bouquet. Orange peel and lemon zest. Green and oily. Malt scents of soot and charcoal, wet grain, bakers chocolate, and a touch of bread crust. Very hop-forward on the nose, even for an American porter.
T: A heavy dose of charcoal and soot kick things off. Roasty, woody, and smoky. A sharp kick of citric hops bring orange peel, orange marmalade, and lemon candy squarely into the spotlight. Hops shift and go oily and green. Roasted malt tastes make a resurgence as tastes of chocolate cake and molasses come to the forefront. There's some burnt malt acidity as well. Finishes with a strong sooty pull that lingers for some time.
M: Medium bodied. Full and creamy. Small-bubbled carbonation is slightly aggressive and has some scrubbing action. Light astringency. Comes off a bit foamy.
O: A nice enough Robust porter. Boulevard wasn't shy with the hopping. The expected roasted malt tastes are forced to share the spotlight, and the hops even get the better of the tilt at times.

12 oz. bottle, with best by date of 06/17/2013. My sixth and final beer to try from the Boulevard sampler twelve pack.
Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.
A - Two fingers of fluffy tan head on top of a dark dark brown, almost black colored body. Ruby hue when held to the light. Not amazing looking for a porter. Big sheets of thin wispy lacing.
S - Smell is of roasted coffee beans, bittersweet chocolate, and toasted malts. An underwhelming smell for a porter, also.
T - Light coffee bean roast, chocolate, & hops in the background. Nothing too out of the ordinary for a porter, just not as intense and defined as some better examples of the style.
M - Carbonated, medium bodied, with lingering coffee bean / hop bitterness in the finish.
Overall, another decent year-round beer from Boulevard, but nothing extraordinary, and not breaking any new ground. Nicely balanced, and well-made, a beer well worth trying. Probably the best year-round offering from Boulevard.
