23 January 2021 - Beer #230
Price: $35.00 at Equilibrium Brewing in Middletown, NY
Appearance: 4 - pitch black and green, but I gotta ding it for a couple floaties. Eww.
Nose: 5 - ZOMG! Pure barrel and hazelnut. If it tastes half as good as it smells we'll be in good shape.
Taste: 4 - very nutty. Not much barrel here, but certainly plenty tasty. The flavor dies a bit on the back end.
Mouth: 4 - much thinner than expected. Quite smooth.
Overall: 4 - not a standout, and not worth the price, but a fun experience.
Cheers!

Poured medium black from a crowler with a almost nitro like soft mocha head that fades quickly into surface islands. Smell and taste are clones: wonderfully roasted hazelnut, right in the sweet spot with those well done, with vanilla and cognac sweetness created an icing like effect to go with the hazelnut, before bourbon-boozy chocolate emerge to strike balance. Puts off hints of espresso as it warms, sneaky complex for a pastry stout. Feel is boozy but surprisingly not very warm, doesn't cloy but has ever certain sweetness, very smooth and light. Continue to enjoy HSAW's craft. The wife liked it

This one pours a fairly and deeply dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.
This smells like big globs of hazelnut frosting, cognac, chocolate fudge and chocolate syrup - this is definitely pastry country that we are entering here.
The barrel is extremely light here - maybe a touch of cognanc, but no bourbon, and no oakiness at all. There is however a whole buttload of hazelnut here, with some secondary vanilla and chocolate.
This is thick and chewy, with a slight booziness on the very back end of each sip.
This is well done despite neither barrel coming through very strongly.

The coffee and hazelnut are delivered creamily with a chocolate that's a little sweetly cloying, but not too much. However there is no barrel I'm experiencing on draft. The full body is big with a soft, fluffy carbonation and a slightly sharp, semi-dry finish bringing out some faint bitterness way in the background.
