Well everyone else already said the story about being only a few blocks away from PP Carlsbad, and being pricey, but I had to chime in. The Pliny is $6.99 a bottle, and a Dorado was $8.99, that is $1.50 more than anywhere else. They try to make it a deal by buying 6, the 7th is a nickel, but they are consistently over priced. It's too bad, because they have a pretty good selection, especially California beers. The guys in there don't know too much about beer, but they seemed friendly enough. Maybe they will read these reviews and change their pricing.

On my brief trip from LA to SD, I was hoping to get some beer adventure in. Sadly, that didn't happen in SD itself, so I figured I could stop in at Pizza Port Carlsbad for a drink and a growler fill. But was there just a wee bit too early and had to get my buddy back to LA post haste. From the Strong Ale Fest, I remembered hearing about Texas Liquor being decent so I figured it was my last SD county hope.
Strolled in and was greeted by a friendly shopkeep. I saw a pretty impressive selection of tasty treats, many of which I wasn't able to easily attain in Los Angeles. This made me quite happy. Some of the sticker prices seemed higher than I expected, but that came out in the wash since I purchased 6 beers - get the seventh one (lowest priced of them all) for 5 cents. The ones I picked up were all bombers in the $5-$7 range except the exceptional Dissident which was $12.99.
This is fine shop, perhaps not the shop that the Pizza Port Bottle Shop is down the road. But definitely worth a stop if you are in Carlsbad.

I went to Texas Liquor on July 3rd 2008 while in town for the holiday. Was very impressed that almost half the store is dedicated to craft beer. They have a HUGE display cooler fridge running down the entire wall filled with cold beer goodies and shelving across from it with the same stuff at room temp.
I have to admit the prices were not the best around, but they had several items there that were of interest and the buy 5 bottles and get 1 for a nickel is the selling point. So I bought 10 bottles (22oz/750ml) and got 2 for a nickel each (12 total). I believe the total was around $80 and under $7.00 a bottle out the door. I can't really complain as I recall getting some interesting stuff.
After I paid he gave me a business card good for $10 off my next $50 purchase. Since I don't live there I still have it. I guess I might have to try and make use of it next time I am in town.
Anyway I think if you are a regular customer and buy in some volume the discounts can be had here. Obviously as a convenience liquor store they have to price primarily for the 40oz carry-out customer.
As for the service I think they are below par in that regard, but the selection and proximity to Pizza Port more than makes up for it IMHO. Worth a stop if you are in the area, just have a clue what the beers you are buying are really worth.

Wow! So I dropped by this place today just to see if they happened to have any Blind Pig in stock because the Port Bottle shop was sold out and I was stunned, they wanted $6.99 per bottle of Blind pig! I mean seriously I will never support this store after they price gouge over a beer that is sold at other places for $4.99 and they had pliny just sitting out in the open area with sunlight directly on it selling for 7.99 a bottle! They do have a good selection but any place that is into screwing customers over is no place I will spend my money. Thanks

Got off at Carlsbad Village Drive and drove only about a block or two, stopped here for one reason alone yesterday and that was the fact that they had Black Butte XX and 20th Anniversary Wit from Deschutes, could not find this stuff anywhere and was relieved to finally see some when I walked into this place, they had it in fridges and advertised out on the floor, location was literally right down the street from Pizza Port Carlsbad, huge selection but not really compared to the bottle shop or Holiday, still a nice surprise, spent twenty dollars on some change on those two bottles, this place had a lot of beer and mostly everything from down south in that area, even some older Lost Abbey beers, newer Belgians that recently made it into the United States, all the Bruery's bottles, Stone, Green Flash, Alesmith including the past two years of Decadence, Coronado, Lightning, Russian River, Firestone, Alpine, etc., place looked like a pretty standard liquor store with the cash register at the front, it was very clean which is expected more so in this area, lots of beer and I cannot emphasize that enough because i did not expect to see such a gigantic selection, will be stopping here from now on, especially when I go to Pizza Port, guy at the front was pretty cool and did not say much but friendly at the same time, a little expensive but worth it with the variety and rarity of some of the beers they are carrying

I found this place on accident when I was looking for Pizza Port in Carlsbad and I have to admit that I was very impressed with their selection available. The selection was very good on both domestics and imports and had prices in line with most other establishments. It's not a huge place but they did pack the store with enough of a selection to make it worth it. If I had to guess there were 400 plus different types of beers available to select from. So when you hit Pizza Port for a slice and a brew stop by and take a look for your favorite brew or a hard to find one.

Since the last reviewers review and also the last pizza port belgium fest, Texas liquor has stepped it up a few notches. Now the have a really good selection of imports mostly belgiums with most main styles covered except for plain gueze. Always get the newest from Stone. Now they have expand their beer selection by adding more 22oz bottles and 750 ml beers. Not the best selection in North County ( Holiday wine cellar is the best) but besides pizza port bottle shop the best selection of bottled beer in Carlsbad.
Re review 2-19-08
One of the best liquor store in the area. Had choice of 6 different alesmith 750 and 3 220z bottles, also 5 different Lost Abbey and 4 22oz Port. Hopsickle, Sea Monster Stout plus all of ballast points, Big Bad Worse, all of stones current styles, several greenflash and Oggi's. Tons of belgium and english beers and many more craft to name. Holiday wine cellar, The bottle shop, and Texas are the best liquor stores in all of North County.

As the other's mentioned, this place is just around the corner from PP Carlsbad and it serves as an easy stock up joint for anyone in the area.
Definately small and not what I would think of as a mecca, but a nice selection of Stone and Green Flash/Reaper. Limited selection of imports, but you can find a sample of British beers beyond the usual Bass homogeny. Very limited selection of German beers, but a shelf is devoted to Belgian beers ala Flemish Primative.
The clerks were nice and welcomed my friend Steve back after he'd been gone for a year from the area, so they do care and pay attention.
If you're in the area, give it a stop and support the small guys.

On the same street (and same side of the street) as royal palms and pizza port, but in this place is right off the 5 exit to carlsbad village. The dude behind the counter was quiet but seemed like he hated the world or something. Probably just a bad day or something.
This place is a little bigger than royal palms, but the selection is about the same, as well as the prices. I did notice though that this place didnt have Alesmith, but Royal Palms did. So i'll be stopping and spending at Royal Palms.
Not a bad store, nice to see corner store with good craft beer.

This is my local store. There is a Bevmo 5 minutes or so from my house, but if Texas mart has what i want, i prefer to support them than the corporate beast. Both of the main clerks know me by face and remember when i am looking for something specific (ie: stone russian stout when it wouldn't show up for a week even though we are 20 minutes from the brewery).
anyways, they have a pretty decent selection: the whole stone lineup including special releases, rogue, alesmith, sierra nevada including specials, 3 or 4 unibroue's, sam smiths, fullers, and several others. many of the beers are both shelved and refrigerated.
its about 3 blocks west (closer to I-5) of pizza port carlsbad, so its a great stop on the way back to the freeway. they are very very strict about selling to minors, so dont bother :]
