Located in the few blocks of Comm Ave that run through the northern edge of Brookline so it's smokefree! Cheers to that! Solid beer selection, but nothing like it's big brother in Allston. I'm excited about the tequila selection aswell, but my wallet can not afford to go do that in this economy. The food menu is basically the same as the location in Allston and the food is just as good. A great place to go on a weekend when the other Sunset gets crowded with the college kids who havn't yet found this joint located inside BU campus.

Stopped in last night after the Bad Religion show across the street, one of the huge benefits of the Paradise gigs. Typical Boston/BU crowd on a Monday, crowded but not packed. Decent selection of taps for 25 or so, something for everyone. Did not eat, so cant comment other than everyone's else's plates looked tasty. Friendly staff, but slow service at the bar, and a lack of knowledge about what's on tap, again, on a fairly slow night. And unfortunately, the usual Boston prices on any special brews.

Ahh... now I see what went wrong. I thought this was the Sunset Grill, which I had heard referred to as Boston's best beer bar, and which supposedly has over 100 taps. So when I got to the Cantina, I was a little disappointed because it only had 30 taps.

That, my friends, is the problem of a man who doesn't have any actual problems.

Anyhow, the tap selection was still geographically and stylistically diverse, and it contained a handful of rare-ish beers (Grapefruit Sculpin, Alpine's Duet), along with regional fare and German offerings. Nothing Belgian or Scandinavian on tap, but that just seems to be the way they run things in New England.

The vibe of the place is fairly bright and upbeat, but that may be because we went on one of the first warm days of Spring. Handful of TVs playing sports, lots of old and well-kempt beer swag including a pretty impressive tray collection, then lots of PoP merch for regional bands. I could see the place getting pretty loud and packed late at night, since BU is right across the street, but at 6 on a weeknight it was easy to find a seat and the clientele consisted mostly of people in their 30s and 40s.

Wait staff was friendly. As for the food--I had tacos, and they tasted very similar to the tacos they served in my grade school cafeteria. I don't mean that as an insult, however. It was actually refreshing to see a straightforward menu, without any dumbass attempts at "fusion" or whatever. I am really fucking tired of people adding soy sauce to Mexican food.

My only knock on the place is the lack of online beer menus. Everything else is pretty dang legit.

Here's the baby brother of the Sunset Grill in Alston (about a mile away on the same street, Beacon). The selection is not as extensive, but it is more than adequate for the typical beer bar.

The food is fine but nothing special. Kinda the typical stuff you find at a bar in Boston.

The beer selection is superior, but not as extensive as its big brother. I can usually find something I've never had before, which is, frankly, not easy.

Not even close to Sunset Grill and Tap.

Never had a good experience with the waitstaff here. They either forget about you, or come to take your order but know nothing about the beer.

The beer selection is 100 times better at their allston location. Most of the time, when I would order interesting beers that I had never heard of, they either didn't have it, or couldn't find it. Not very good qualities for a bar that prides itself on its beer selection.

Most redeeming qualities are their margaritas and their food (which are both amazing)

I found out about this place on the Beer Advocate forum when looking for a good place to go on an upcoming visit to Boston. In general this is a very good place. My only problem is that it was very far out of the way from the center of town and I had to take a cab in both directions. I believe it's across the street from Boston University.

The tap selection was very good and there were at least four beers I had never had including selections from Clown Shoes, BBC and Kona. The bartender was very knowledgible and friendly and gave me a number of tastes. The bottle list is also very impressive. The menu looked interesting but i didn't get anything. It's a good place but I'm not sure if it was worth the trip especially after I discovered some good places closer to my hotel.

I'm at the Grille all the time. Love it. An old friend was in town and told us to meet her at the Cantina for dinner and some drinks.

The Cantina has the same vibe. Almost sports bar/almost chain restaurant with tons of decorations on the walls. All around a fun place to have dinner. Menu is the same as the Grille. Great burgers and sandwiches, awesome nachos, some quality mexican style cooking. All around fun place.

They list about 30 beers on tap on their menu - maybe a bit less. Still a decent amount but pales in comparison to the sister restaurant's 100+. My biggest problem came when my girlfriend and I walked up to the bar, and literally struck out on the first 4 beers we asked for. This wasn't 12 oclock on a Saturday night either, it was 7 oclock on a not too busy Wednesday. Our waitress didn't seem too knowledgeable about the beer list either, but at the least very friendly.

Maybe I'm being a little harsh on this place. It's just not a good beer bar. Come here if you like Margiratas and other mixed drinks but there are plenty of other options in the area if you're looking for a good brew.

After a few job interviews, I decided to have dinner here. The restaurant is across from Boston University's campus. The restaurant had some tables outside for the gorgeous day. Inside, the restaurant is somewhat long with a medium sized bar to your right. Lots of various memorabilia everywhere. Somewhat felt you were in some chain restaurant like a TGIFridays. But it had a novelty to it, almost like the Friendly Toast up in Portsmouth, NH when it comes to atmosphere.

A pretty large menu of food is offered at the restaurant. I went with their signature Fajita Pita Melt which was quite good. The restaurant seems very infamous for their margaritas. However, the beer they do have is wicked awesome. Some nice micros on tap (I had the Weyerbacher Pumpkin, which I never saw on tap).

Since it was 4:30 on a Wednesday, it was not too busy but lots of staff on hand. My bartender seemed very knowledgeable and friendly.

Overall, definitely worth checking out.

Maybe I was expecting too much from their beer list but I was not impressed. They had around 30 or so drafts but nothing that yelled out try me and nothing that you can not see any where else. They use pint glasses for all of the beers which is not great. The different sizes they offer is nice though i am not a big fan of large beers since they just end up getting warm. The bottle list was also better than most places but again nothing special. Food wise they have an extensive menu leaning toward the southwest and cajun. I am always worried with menus this big and I was proven right again. The nachos were excellent but the tuna melt I had was barely warm. My buddy got the mac and cheese which had mushy pasta. Pretty impressive tequila list though. Service was excellent though.

All the other reviewers have done a good job on the basics of this spot

"Smaller (in size and beer selection) then sister site Sunset Grill."

Cross the street from BU's hockey rink, five mins from Fenway, this place is friendly and relaxed, extensive and varied menu of worthy and tasty options. Go for the food, beer and tequila.
Plenty of quality Beer offerings, locals and from far and wide. Also extensive tequila options. I was with a school group of 50 (!) on this visit, they definitely know how to accommodate a large group and everybody enjoyed the athmosphere and the food. Enjoyable and certainly worth a visit if in the area.

This bar is a smaller version of the Sunset Grille, with a slightly different theme. The focus here is on Mexican fare. They have a lot of different Mexican food on the menu, which is generally pretty good. They also have dozens of tequilas behind the bar too, and the tequila flights are a good way to try a few different ones. The service and atmosphere is just about what you can expect to find at the Grille, a cool place filled with young people. The focus here is more on the bottled beers. They have a very good selection, but slightly scaled back from what you can find at the Grille. The prices are what you'd expect to pay for good beer. I had a Weybacher Blithering Idiot and an Ayinger Celebrator for $4.99 each. Overall, this is a great location for beers if you are on the BU stretch of Comm Ave. It's a great place if you are going to Agannis Arena.

Stopped by for a few pints before a recent Sox game. Walking in was like going into a mini-Sunset Grill (the sister location right down the street). Has all the same decorations and themes going on. Somewhere in the vicintiy of 20 taps and the two or three I sampled were all fresh. The bottle selection was as large as the Sunset Grill. One note of a difference is that the tap list is not on the back of the little book (that is bottles only) but a tap listing can be found in little plastic stands all over the place.

Service was a bit forgetful. Our waitress forgot to bring our beers over twice and forget one of the meals someone in my party ordered. It was like she was hungover and forgetful. Food was as good as the Sunset Grill too. Huge menu selection of pub grub.

Would definitely visit again but I still prefer the Sunset Grill location.

Similar but condensed from it's sister site in Allston, the Sunset Grill, sits comfortly and centrally on Comm Ave in Boston in the BU area across from the Agganis Arena and right off the Green Line.

The atmosphere is festive and vibrant. Even on a Tuesday the place was busy.

The beer list is less than the sister site, but still very varied and well chosen. 38 beers on tap, and much more in bottles. I went with the BBC Coffee Haus Porter on-tap.

Service was slow, almost annoyingly so. We were on a time limit because of an engagement later down the street and we just stopped in for a quick drink.

I was not able to try the food, and i wish a second a visit to review more thoroughly, but until then...

Smaller (in size and beer selection) sister site to Sunset Grill.

Food seems to be the same (which is basically very well-made bar food), with the exception of the chocolate fondue dessert, which my wife loves, and that I don't remember from the menu at Sunset Grill.

Atmosphere seems cleaner and nicer, which is probably why my wife prefers this location. High ceilings, lots of beer decor, big fans, a few TVs, some pictures of old Allston and Brookline.

Selection is large, lots of bottles and 40+ taps. Service is good, although questions about the beers are mostly met with blank stares.

After visiting Sunset Grill a few times I thought I'd give the Cantina a shot. I liked the atmosphere of the place a lot. Decorated with various license plates from different states and several tv's all over the bar. A little too dark inside, but it wasn't really a problem for me. I noticed when I walked in that they have a chalkboard near the entrance of which beers they have just tapped. Of of those was the Samuel Adams "375" Colonial Ale and that's what I ordered. Quality of the beer was fine and it was damn tasty! Even though I went for lunch so it wasn't that crowded, the service was great and very friendly. Very nice tap selection compared to most bars in the area. It doesn't rival Sunset Grill's selection, but then again, if you want the Sunset Grill, go there, it's not too far away. For food, I got a bacon cheeseburger, my friend got a salad and we split spinach and artichoke dip. All of the food was very good. I had a great experience at the Cantina and would recommend it to anyone.

I like to stop at the Cantina on my way out to Allston on the B line. It allows me to get off the train a few stops early and less time on the trolley is always a good thing.

There is nothing noteable about the building. It is fairly new and has a small outdoor patio in front. I usually opt for the bar which is immediately on your right when you walk in with a large dining area to your left. They have a good selection of beers here both on-tap and the bottle but they often seem to be out of my first choice or two. They also do have a full liquor license which the Sunset grill does not.

I have eaten the food here before and it is better than average but nothing to write home about. The service is always friendly and attentive and I have not had any freshness issues with beers here. I recommend this place pretty highly but it just doesn't have too much character. It feels almost like it doesn't belong in the neighborhood that it's in. This is a plus in some ways and a minus in others.

Very similar to the Sunset Grill & Tap. The food is nearly identical and a very good deal in my opinion, much better than average bar food and a plethora of options to pick from. Selection of beer is a little less comprehenisve but still extremely impressive and one of the better lists in the Boston area. Atmosphere is a large, lively college themed bar but doesn't feel cheap at all with fairly intersted decor, lots of old beer signs/posters from various companies are plastered all over the walls.

My review might be slightly biased because the service I had was absolutely atrocious. The waiter completely forgot our order and we waited for 20-30 minutes without any hint of our food (we had even ordered an appetizer). When he came back, he had his pen and paper out like he was going to take our order again. I think he completely forgot he had already waited on us. Now to make amends, they did give us the appetizer for free - it was about $8 , which was a very cool gesture but it was still a major inconvenience.

Overall = assuming my poor service was a total fluke, I definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. However, if you're heading out this way with some flexibility, I recommend the Sunset Grill over the Cantina as I had a much better overall experience there.

Located on Commonwealth Ave in the heart of a heavily saturated B.U. area, Sunset Cantina is easy to locate. A good sized bar that tends to cater to the college & university crowds. This is also an establishment that should make any BA content.

The emphasis at this place is their selection, which is very good. They offer 5 or so "Freshly Tapped" selections. During my visit the Brooklyn Monster Ale was on tap. It was very tasty and fresh. This being a somewhat rare selection to see on tap, I was pleased. They also have a menu that describes their tap and bottle selections. They have around 30-40 beers on tap.

Some bottle highlights were Anchor Foghorn, Victory Storm King Stout, and Dogfish Head. They have Sam Adams Triple Bock, which is something you don't see every day. Beers are provided with your typical pint glass. Looked like they had some specialty glasses as well. Prices are very reasonable at about $4 to $5 a pint. They have an extensive pub like food menu (i.e. burgers, nachos, salads, etc.)

I like this place and will stop by again. Service was friendly, attentive and welcoming. Obviously, there are many parallels and comparisons to the Sunset Bar & Grill located in Allston. Both places might suffer from that "too many options, decreases quality" complex, but you have to give credit to the selection available.

"Hey," Jim glared over at us from the bar, glancing at his watch, "they've got $50 dollar shots here. Let's order a round," he yelled as we approached and took seats on his right. The bar, which looked like it could seat fourteen, was immediately in on the right after entering the door from Comm. Ave. To the left traveling down the length of the rectangular layout was the main dining area with a variety of seating options with booths and free-standing tables. There was a fair amount of people eating, and sitting at the bar, for a late, lunch time crowd. I noticed nobody had been sitting near Jim.

"Hell no," Kumar said, "we aren't paying for that." I shook my head and Jim eyed us crazily, before tapping the finished pint glass in front of him, an empty, sticky shot glass next to it, and nodded at the bored barkeep who jumped into action. "Fuck, I thought that was part of my pay-off, but I guess not," Jim griped as the bartender served him up a pint of something pale. I grabbed a drinks menu and eyed the 37 draughts they had on, mostly the same stuff they had up the street at the Bar & Grill, just less of it. I ordered an Avery Reverend while Kumar went with a Dogfish 90, and we were set for the time-being. They also had forty or so bottles, including the usual pap, but tequila was definitely their game with over 70 different tequilas, including shots of Herradura Suprema at $49.99 a pop, and a laundry list of specialty margaritas. The food menu, again, looked to be about the same as the Bar & Grill, pub grub, but it wasn't time to eat yet. Also, the bartender had wandered off over to the video machine at the street end of the bar, playing the "What's different about this picture?" game, so it wasn't like we had any say in the matter.

Overall, the place was mostly dark. However, the nine or so televisions and holy-shit kitsch plastered everywhere lightened it up a bit: license plates, coasters, serving trays, posters, Jose Cuervo flags, and a three-tiered fake fountain in the middle of the dining area still festooned with mistletoe, but no running water. Hanging from the ceiling were paddle wheel fans, reminiscent of the fans in a San Francisco brewpub I had been to back in 1995. It was hard to tell what kind of theme was going on in this place, but as I tried to make out what it was, a loud "CLANG!" brought me back to what was going on at the bar.

Down at the far end, a waitress had rung what looked like a captain's bell hanging above the bar and set a bunch of to-go orders down on the top of the bar. A pair of college guys sitting down at that end, wearing UNH sweatshirts and ballcaps on backwards, paid the bartender who was reluctant to leave his riveting game on the game machine, and went back to sipping on their pints. "Those fucking kids down there have been breast-feeding on those things since I got here," Jim said, "two hours ago," he stated with emphasis. Kumar grabbed some goldfish mix from the goblet in front of us, wiped his hands on a cocktail napkin, looked at his hands, wiped them again, and turned to Jim.

"Well, we didn't get your message until a little while ago. We were planning on heading over to Cambridge anyway, so you're lucky we're even here."

"That's a crock of shit," Jim said slamming his pint down. "We had this settled yesterday. It's not my fault you suck at cards. With all that whining you were doing last night, you're lucky there wasn't some serious ass-kicking going on, of the tan-skinned variety." Apparently, winning poker the night before was all that had stopped Jim from ripping out Kumar's medulla oblongata and serving it up like sushi.

"You make me laugh," Kumar said, chuckling, defusing the situation. I thought for sure that last line was going to detonate something. "You simply said we should go on a crawl today, you didn't mention where, so fuck off."

"Like hell I didn't," Jim roared, and with that a sudden outburst of laughter echoed over to us from the direction of the captain's bell. The UNH guys were looking in our direction, smirks on their faces, one of them muttering something that sounded like "…king drunks." BU's new arena, the Agganis, had just recently opened across the street, so it was likely they were here for a game. Jim wasn't going to let the comment pass.

"Maine Black Bears kick ass, you whores," Jim shouted at them and then turned to the bartender, "A round of those $50 shots," he paused, "now," he exploded and staggered off his barstool towards the two Wildcats at the far end, their eyes popping out of their orbital sockets, grabbing like suckfish at their sacks of food.

Known more for its tequilla selection than its beer, the cantina still boasts nearly 40 beer on tap and about 60 or so more in the bottle. The selection is much more stagnant than it bigger brother and the waitstaff much less informed about beer (if thats possible). The menu selections for food are exactly the same as the grill and tap. I have had two bad experiences here with the same waiter. He is slow, forgets drink orders (espcially sizes), and is overall unattentive.

All in all not too bad, but ill take the grill and tap over it just about any day.

Here's the thing - you get a beer menu that looks like the Original Sunset's and you say to yourself (or your drinking buddy) "Where's the rest of the taps ?". I guess it's just reflex from 14 years of going to the first Sunset. The selection is OK but really doesn't grab your imagination like the smaller but more exciting and well chosen 24 taps at Redbones (the same holds true for the Orginal, even with its 110 taps !). Some regular taps are quite nice, notably Chimay Cinq Cents and Dogfish 90. I was jonesing for a draft Fullers ESB but none in sight. OK then how about a nice hoppy American like HopDevil, Stone, or BearRepublic anything on tap, no dice. My companion-in-hops ordered a Grants Fresh Hop. I think someone must have used it to hold a window open. No hops there (see seperate review). Where's the lupulin at this place ? At least the tequila selection looks good and has reasonable tasting "flights". The food is pretty good and the atmosphere nice and non-claustrophbic. Our bartender, while nice and attentive when facing customers, spent an inordinate amount of time wading through the POS system with his back to the customers. I don't know what their sales system made the poor guy do but it looked like he trying to bring back an errant Gemini mission and seemed to take up the same amount of attention.
