Notes:
Scythe & Sickle is an-amber ale brewed with a variety of malts, including pils, rye flakes and oat flakes, for incredible depth of flavor and a hint of natural sweetness. Scythe & Sickle brings a new life and flavor to autumn beer lists traditionally filled with Oktoberfests and pumpkin ales. The flavors of the hard work of summer and the celebration of autumn harvest are captured in Scythe & Sickle, creating a unique but traditional Ommegang farmhouse harvest ale.

“Scythe & Sickle is our foray into honoring the harvest season, taking the finest malts and blending them seamlessly into a rich amber ale,” says Brew Master Phil Leinhart. “Farming is about precision, timing and care, and this gently sweet ale is our testament to the craft and care of farming.”

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. This pours a hazy golden color with a massive foamy white head which has good retention. The smells are of fruity yeast esters, banana, grass hops. The feel is medium high carbonation. The taste is pretty good some yeast esters, a little grass hops, some ripe fruit.

12 ounce bottle, poured into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a gorgeous orange/gold amber with two and a half fingers of an off-white head, that lasted forever. Held up to the light, there’s plenty of red, orange highlights sparkling throughout. Beautiful beer to look at.

Aroma: Floral, and spicy. Black pepper, citrus, saffron, and brown sugar. Freshly baked bread.

Taste: Sweet, yet nicely balanced by the spices. Good citrus notes, finished by nice bready notes from the rye, oat and wheat used to make the beer. Oatmeal with fresh fruit, in the best possible way!

Mouthfeel: Effervescent. There’s a lot of nice carbonation that cleanses the palate and makes you want to take another drink.

Overall: Even though I had this beer out of season, it is still an excellent beer. Can’t wait for autumn to come around again and have it in season. Another excellent offering from Ommegang!

Poured into tulip

A: Pours an orange-gold with an off-white, fine and creamy, 2 finger head, also has tons of visible carbonation.

S: Spicy with hints of citrus peel. Rustic bread aromas as well.

T: Citrus and candi sugar. Lots of cereal grains, just as the label says; hints of rye, oat and wheat. General rustic, earthy tones here. Rye tang lasts in the finish.

M: Lots of carbonation that tingles on the tongue with a medium body.

O: One unique beer! Another cracker of a brew from Ommegang. Scythe and Sickle is definitely a Belgian beer for autumn. Would go well with autumn foods and thanksgiving dinner. Get this seasonal when it comes out, it’s definitely one to try.

12oz bottle poured into a chalice. Freshness date of 7/2014. This should be able to take some time in the cellar.

A: Hazy orange color. Four fingers of rocky white head retain very well Lacing is thick and prominent, sticking everywhere and making the walls of the glass look as though they are carpeted.

S: Spicy Belgian yeast. Hints of pepper and cinnamon. Very slight must. Fruity with aromas of dates and dried banana chips. Rich malty scents of caramel and bread. Touch of starch and spicy rye in the background. Hops provide a grassy and slightly herbal character. Complex nose, very good.

T: Spicy Belgian yeast up front. Cinnamon, pepper, and others. Hint of clove. Somewhat musty. Fruitiness pulls through with tastes of dried figs and dates. Tropical esters lay in some pineapple. Hops provide a zing of lemon and citrus pith, but eventually go grassy and herbal. The multiple grains used in this brew provide a great foundation. Bready, slight hints of caramel, bread pudding, treacle, subtle oat starch and rye spice in the background. Dry overall. Finishes with a dry rye spiciness and lingering herbal and citrus pith hop flavors.

M: The overall dryness makes the medium body seem lighter than it is. Ample carbonation scrubs the palate. Creamy and a bit foamy. Light hop astringency.

O: Another great and complex Belgian-style ale from Ommegang. This is a perfect pairing for the Thanksgiving dinner, next time it comes around that is. I consumed this beer out of season, but not out of code. It would make an excellent compliment to a hearty meal on a cool fall day, but it is still very enjoyable even on a warm day in late spring. It's also a welcome change of pace from the mediocre ambers and octoberfests that flood the market in the fall.

On tap, served in a pint glass so the aromas weren't exactly jumping from the glass. Notes from my Untappd history.

A: Nice orange and amber hues

S: unmistakable Belgian nose. Not too different from other Ommegang brews.

T: Banana and citrus notes up-front with a crisp, clean finish. Very nice.

M: Not overpowering, but not fleeting.

O: This is an ideal brew for the fall season. Will definitely seek this out when it's re-released

Orange, semi-hazy, some rising bubbles, ivory colored head with great retention and lacing.

Aroma of apple cider, nutmeg, rye and Belgian yeast.

Has a dry and sweet apple cider character in the flavor. Lots of spices, ginger, rye and nutmeg. Subtle pine hop adds a mild bitterness. Fruity esters

Moderate body with plenty of carbonation. Slick feel, chewy in the middle and with a tart, semi-dry finish.

This may be the first time I've sampled this style. Solid brew. A fresh addition to the harvest ale collection. Similar to some other styles but different enough to be its own. Will be sampling more of this style for sure.

12 oz bottle into a tulip. $2.70 for the single.

A: Opaque, ruby-colored body with an enormous frothy head. Quite stunning.

S: Bready and grainy with maybe a touch of sweet fruit. Grapes? Slightly floral, but more beery than French versions of the style.

T: Distinctive sweet yeast mingling with baked bread. Sweet and savory. Perfumey late taste that ends abruptly.

M: Relatively full for the style. Nicely carbonated.

O: I was really hot on this the first few times I had it, but that's evolved into more of a casual friendship. This isn't Ommegang's worst 12 oz single, but it's in my bottom few.
