750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/10/2011. Pours pitch black color with a 2-3 finger dense and fluffy tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of raisin, cherry, prune, milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, clove, pepper, earth, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted notes and yeast esters. Taste of cherry, raisin, milk chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, toast, dark bread, clove, earth, light pepper, and yeast spiciness. Slight fruit and cocoa tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, milk chocolate, cocoa, toast, roasted malt, dark bread, earth, and light yeast spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of roasted chocolate flavors and yeast esters; with zero cloying flavors present on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian style porter! Very nice balance and complexity of roasted chocolate flavors and yeast esters; and extremely smooth to drink. Really enjoyed this one.

Got this bottle for $5 on clearance and was originally marked at $17, so I thought it was a good deal. Never had a beer by this brewery before although I have seen bottles like these.

A: Pours a nice "Stout Dark" with a 1 1/2 inch caramel colored head. The head fades down pretty gradually and leaves some nice lacing in the glass.

S: Smell consists of dark barley malts and Belgian chocolate. I also get some nutty roast aroma and dark fruit, like cherries or plum. Its pretty strong and I could smell it as soon as I popped the cork.

T: Taste is similar to the smell, the dark malt combined with the Belgian chocolate hit you directly. More of a tart flavor than a sweetness when it comes to the chocolate and the malt. I get a roasty flavor toward the end with a nutty, dry finish. Did not get much of the fruit in the mouth as I did in the nose though.

M: Thick and heavy on the palate for a porter, yet creamy and smooth. The taste definitely lingers around for a bit.

O: A very enjoyable beer. I dont think I would have touched this if it wasn't on clearance due to the original price combined with the lower than my standards ABV. But a very well done Belgian Porter. If you can get a deal on it or you got long money, get it!

A: Dark brown, a tad hazy, with a thick head of dense, khaki-colored foam. The head lingered well, although lacing was scant. Points off for the rather coarse residue in the bottom of my glass.

S: Bread, burnt malt, cocoa, plums, and a touch of floral hops. Fairly pleasant.

T: A lot of sweetness from the malt (not cloying, but definitely in the forefront). Mild bread taste for a moment, then a mix of bitter chocolate and tart plum which last a while; perhaps a drop of molasses in the mix as well. The bitter hops is fairly late showing up, and it's accompanied by a slightly perfume-like taste (sharp and sweet at the same time). The final, lingering flavor is mild, bitter-tart hops.

M: A little over-carbonated for my palate, with the mouthful turning to foam -- I suppose this forced me to slow down and sip. Slightly chewy. Finish was dry, bordering on astringent.

O: Good, but not worth the price I paid. Cocoa was present, but fairly subdued and less than I was hoping for.

From a 750 ml brown bottle, caged and corked. Pours out a thick dense black shade with wafer thin dark brown highlights around the nimbus, crowned by a tall light tan spongy head that retains well and slowly depletes over time. Leaves a casing of thick sticky lacing behind in its wake.

Roasty malt, dark dried fruit and cocoa on the nose, rich yet not overwhelming. Tart cherry blooms faintly in the background as it warms and opens more.

Cocoa rises intensely up front in the flavour, a bitter dark chocolate accompanied by roasty dark malt. Sour burnt astringency follows in the middle, while spicy, earthy hops become strange bedfellows with mild sour cherries on the finish. Earthy, nutty notes from the cocoa nibs join the party into the aftertaste.

Medium-bodied mouthfeel on the lighter end, velvety smooth texture, with moderate carbonation that adds a bit of pep.

There are some pleasant elements to this ale, however to my personal taste the hops tend to throw things off, and after a while dominate the whole show. A shame because they hog the spotlight from the Callebut chocolate and the Liefmans Cuvee Brut, either one of which would add to the overall flavour profile, and combined would rock it in theory. I can't get an angle on them though from the more dominant hop presence. I never thought I'd be so disappointed with a hoppy soul kiss as I am at the moment. In the end an okay ale, but in my opinion doesn't live up to what its full potential could be given the ingredients list.

During a brisk January visit to Manhattan, I found refuge near the corner of Madison and East 36th … if you need to guess, you probably shoud not be on this website. Once inside the pubby interior, and nestled at the bar, I glanced at the beer menu and spoke: “I’ll have the Ommegang Seduction, please.”

This is Ommegang’s Belgian dark ale; at 6.8%, it is relatively low in alcohol. It is a beautiful sight to behold. Once poured, Seduction settles into an impervious liquid crowned by a thin veneer of foam. The nose detects a slight wafting of raisins and cocoa. There is a semi-sweet blanket of syrupy molasses, toasty with minor hoppy finish. Somewhere in the back, you can taste a little dash of caramel and brown sugar. The fine balance surprisingly avoids the cloyingness that sometimes endangers a beer of this complexity.

Another surprise is the rather crispy mouthfeel that one associates with an unfiltered Czech pilsner – and certainly not a stout, Belgian or otherwise. This is yet another homerun from the brewers at Cooperstown. There may not be crying in baseball, but there sure is plenty of it (for joy, that is) in the beer drinking business.

Pours a slightly hazy dark brown with thin light brown head, settles to a thin ring with a few spots on the glass. Smell: light roast, tart plum, dark chocolate, earthiness. Taste: toasted grain, vinous, caramel, roast and dry chocolate notes, cherries. Starts off a bit light in body, then creamy carbonation kicks in mid sip to push it to medium plus. Easy drinking, but a bit muddled... also priced far above its grade.

Thick and nearly black, this is a big, rich-looking brew. It's topped by a bit of tan head that stays around as well as sticking around in patches, even after the head drops (though the foam left is thick).
It's not so distinctly Belgian in the nose or on the tongue as Ommegang tends to be; the yeast isn't as much the focus, it seems, as they typically like to make it. The major factors are cherry and some bittersweet chocolate, certainly by way of chocolate malts and possibly by further addition to the beer. The cherry is tart and fresh. I would be interested to see how it would work out if the yeasty presence was upped. Good stuff, still.
Thick and rich without being sticky, this one has a good bite and a good, creamy flow developing a delicate smoothness in the big body that takes a master's touch.
