a: This was a slightly hazy, somewhat dark golden color. It poured with a thick, creamy head that left behind lots of lace.

s: Big, yeasty esters of slightly earthy bananas. Bright, fresh, sugary tropical fruit and bready grains. Some peppery yeast emerged as it warmed.

t: Sweet tropical fruit early, getting pretty sugary toward the middle. Drier, yeasty finish; peppery, light barnyard.

m: Soft and lush.

o: Another very good beet from Ommegang. No surprise there. Not quite up among my favorites from them, but knocking on the door for sure.

Appearance: Golden, cloudy, very effervescent, nice long lasting head. Good start.
Smell: Spicy, cloves, esters, almost apple-y, grape-y, hints of candi sugar, very nice.
Taste: Flavor falls a bit flat compared to aroma, again, quite fruity, a bit more tropical, maybe a bit of pineapple. Defintely some residual sweetness. I think the alcohol is hidden well in this beer, may be playing off esters well. I like this beer a lot, the complexity could be a bit higher though.
Mouthfeel: Dry, but enough sweetness to round it out. Not overly carbonated. Very good.
Overall: Very good beer, one of the best I've had from Ommegang, and I generally like most of their beers. I would definitely recommend this beer.

Poured from that beautiful bomber into a pint glass.

Look: A hazy gold with a bit of sediment suspended throughout. The head was one finger that went away fairly quickly to a thin ring around the glass. Doesn't appear to be much lacing, but I'm wondering about my glass, maybe that's why there isn't much. Will edit if needed.

Smell: Awesome. This is why I'm loving BPAs. So much going on. At first I detected some strong lemon notes, and then something that seemed like a spicy banana. Some of the yeast/wheat can be picked up as well. What's best is it last though out the whole glass of beer. The smell never fell off. I have to say the only reason it doesn't get a five, is because I've never given a five. Fair? Maybe not, but I can edit later if I've decided there isn't a better brew.

Taste: Almost as good as the smell. A ton is going on that I'm not sure I'll ever be able to appreciate. If it weren't for the ABV, this just screams breakfast! It has a lot of meal flavor to it. As in oats, wheat, a bit of fruit. Very good.

Feel: As full as the taste. A solid feel that stays throughout that is slightly lightened by the mild carbonation. I wish it had a head that lasted a bit longer so I could wrestle with that while drinking. That would have made it perfect. I'll pour a bit more aggressive next time to see what I can come up with.

Overall: This was a solid choice that I'll keep collecting and pushing on others that visit. I loved it. It might need to be rated higher, but still being a rookie at this (5 months on the craft beer scene) I'm hesitant to give it much more. I still want to try others, but Ommegang has been a wonder at introducing me to BPAs. Fun fun.

Picked up a single of this brew in a 22 ounce bottle at my local establishment, Civera's in Drexel Hill. Lets see how this goes. Liked the label I must say.

Appearance: pours a golden, crisp, orange-like color. Leaves behind a almost two inch head that followed all the day down, wit some very impressive lacing. Big ups.

Smell: first notes were an almost fresh cut grass aroma. Another big factor was an impressive rush of malts that give an impressive scent of peaches and pears. A slight undertone of pine is also detected. Very nice.

Taste: at first, the flavor of strong lemon hits me. But of course it's rounded out by light yeast with a great addition of peach and possibly banana. A great and strong flavor of light florals is noticed from start to finish. Possible light spices were added along with sweet bread. Quite nicely balanced.

Mouthfeel: medium body and medium carbonation. Leaves a lightly, dry finish.

Overall: coming into this beer I was a little intrigued. The more I tasted, the more I truly enjoyed. A great addition to my spring time beer list. The sweet flavors and aroma of lemon, peach, and even banana whilst being rounded out by bitter, deep malts. I would definitely enjoy this beer again and would totally recommend this to a friend to enjoy a breezy, spring night. Cheers!

A: Hazy golden color with a half-thumb of good fluffy white head. Good lacing. Lots of tiny carbonation bubbles.

S: Some banana, cucumber, and wet paper.

T: Strong alcohol flavor, a cedar-like taste...like chewing on a pencil. Earthy bitter flavors. It's interesting for sure. The hop character really does come out...it sets itself apart from the beer and is noticeable. The hops are a bit spicy. There is a faint vanilla flavor, and even some mint quality. Flowery aftertaste. It is complex.

M: The label describes the beer as a "full-bodied ale," however this feels extremely light and airy to me. The beer by itself is (although heavy with flavors) very light and thin. If you add the copious foamy carbonation, that further extends the light mouthfeel.

O: Overall I thought the beer was good. It has a very complex taste, but I feel like it competes with itself too much. It is not a beer that I can honestly say that I would sit down and enjoy a glass of, however it was a unique experience because there was so much going on. The more I drink the beer, the more the flavors start to wash together. The overall flavor isn't that impressive.

On a side note, I really like beers from Ommegang and Achouffe. They are two of my favorite breweries, but I wasn't a huge fan of this collaboration.

ommegang gnomegang is just fun to say isnt it?

appearance: hazy and burnt orange in color. on the verge of opaque with a half a finger head on the pour that quickly dissipates. no lacing.

smell: belgian yeast, slight bitterness, a bit of alcohol twinge, with a hint of hay and orange peal.

taste: the belgian yeast and bitterness come to the front and are soon followed by the orange and grassy taste. slight alcohol bite to it as well.

mouthfeel: medium bodied with descent carbonation across the tongue. nothing lingering.

overall: had this right after the hennepin. they are both similar, but the gnomegang was just a little more harsh in just about every way. still a delicious brew, but i prefer other offerings from ommegang. still one to try!

Pours a hazy orangey golden with a yellowish hue and a nice white head that sticks to the sides. Aroma is wonderfully yeasty providing some spiciness, some pepper, there is some citric fruitiness in there too. Flavor follows the aroma but on steroids with a nice dry finish. A crisp, creamy mouthfeel. Overall, fantastic brew.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 1/23/2013. Pours lightly cloudy golden straw color with a nice 2 finger fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with plenty of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big lemon, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, wheat, bread, floral, grass, candi sugar, and earthy yeast spiciness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy esters with moderate malt balance. Taste of big lemon, apple, pear, grape, light banana, clove, pepper, wheat, bread, candi sugar, floral, and earthy yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of light fruits, light banana, clove, pepper, wheat, bread, candi sugar, and floral on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance and complexity of fruity/spicy esters; with a great malt/spice flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a lightly slick and very crisp mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely incredible Belgian strong pale ale! Huge balance and complexity of fruity/spicy esters with light-moderate malt sweetness; and dangerously smooth and crisp to sip on for 9.5%. An insanely delicious offering.

750ml bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: Golden in color, displays great clarity. A towering three fingers of white head retains wonderfully. A blanket of sticky lacing is left behind as the beer is consumed.

S: Very yeasty and complex. Musty and chalky. Soft white pepper, clove, spice. Pleasant malt base is bready and biscuity- undoubtedly pilsner malt, among others. Hops are herbal and spicy with a hint of lemon zest. Alcohol is stealthily hidden. Faint whiffs of pineapple and tropical esters. Great balance and awesome depth on the nose.

T: Yeasty, as in the nose. Chalk and spice. Has a bit of that musty cellar taste. White pepper and just a faint hint of clove. A touch starchy. Slightly medicinal, but in a good way. Bready and biscuity malt base. Hops fit in nicely too with a slight balancing bitterness and some spicy/herbal tastes and a faint spritz of lemon. Pineapple, apricot, orange, and other tropical esters come toward the back end, and the alcohol knocks gently to announce its presence without alarming anyone. The finish is bready and yeasty, caressing the palate gently as if rocking it to sleep.

M: Medium bodied, though it feels even lighter. Luscious and delectably creamy. Slight prickling carbonation. Far too drinkable for its own good at 9.5% abv. A warmth in the swallow is the only clue to its strength. Defines what it is for a beer to be smooth.

O: This is one of the best and most memorable Belgian golden ales I've ever had. Supremely balanced, with the malt, hops, and yeast contributing equally. A melt-in-your-mouth creamy and smooth feel propels drinkability through the roof. It has that great dichotomy of being simply pleasing yet still complex and contemplative. If there's a heaven, this is the type of beer I imagine they'd be drinking up there.

poured from a 750ml bottle into a la chouffe tulip.
pours a perfect golden yellow, with a head of about an inch and a half. smells nice and funky. taste is crisp and clear, can definitely feel the funk...in a very good way. abv is hidden extremely well, this one sure is easy to drink.
excellent beer, though it tastes more like a tripel than a bspa. had it on tap at the brewery a few weeks ago at an ommegang dinner, but i was already more than a few drinks in at that point. nice to taste it with a clean head/palate.

very very good beer, hope they release this year round.

This beer pours a hazy gold color at 45 F. I did not pour it vigorous enough to get a huge head because yesterday the yeast was disturbed and that could also be leading to the super haze. The head is brilliant white mostly of fine bubbles and a few lager ones and just as a nice ring around the glass and a Friar Tuck cap in the center that is a six point star. Cool! The lacing is minimal but the ring remains on the glass as I sip. As the beer warms it gets clearer (Chill haze).

The aroma is mostly of a mix of sweet light malt, grain, citrus, banana, bubble gum, yeast and a hint of metallic.

The taste is bready and mildly sweet and very similar to the description of the aroma. I love straightforward beers even though they are pretty complex. The malt sweetness and grains with the fruits play equally on your tongue as it passes over your taste buds and then near the end some tartness come through just before a bit of dry hop bitterness and peppery feel at the end albeit very mild. The dryness lures you to another sip unsuspecting of the high alcohol content which is only mildly apparent on the back of your throat. Very well balanced!

The mouthfeel is a bit tricky. The moderate amount of carbonation mixed with the higher alcohol content sort of give it a bite although the body is moderate and lighter than you'd expect. The finish is dry and peppery. There is a bit of slippery feel on my tongue.

This beer is really quite good! In fact, I would say it is on the cusp of being world class. I know there are better versions out there, but I have not had them yet so I can't compare. I am going to say that I feel confident in giving this beer 4's in all the categories. It's really excellent! Well balanced and pleasant.

Smells wheaty. Mild carbonation, mild flavor. Light bodied mouthfeel. Balanced hops/malt, slightly sweet with vanilla and orange notes. Maybe just my inexperience but it tases remarkably similar to a wit. Typical beer for me, goes down easy, could drink several of these - hides the 9.5% ABV well.

A gentle pour, intended to keep the yeast chunks on the bottom, results in a diminished head. Cloudy yellow body. Second pour really changes the game, nice head!

Nose is sharp hops and brett. This could be good...

Flavor is not nearly as sharp as the nose. Semi-sweet with some interesting bubble-gum qualities from the yeast. Hops show up late and not nearly enough (for me).

Mouthfeel is slick and gently coating.

Overall, a very nice brew. I've kept this one around for over a year, but that didn't seem to do it any harm.

Eh. This is not doing it for me. Odd tang. Lack of balance or interesting flair. Middle of the road mediocre, for me. I may have had this in the past, and if I did, I am sure I liked it more than this. At least, I certainly hope I did.

Pours a hazy orangeish gold with a creamy,frothy, foamy white head that sticks very nicely. The smell is simple, clean, and fruity. It has a grain note but is primarily dominated by the yeast which is fruity with hint of clove. After it gets some time to oxidize you can smell some faint peppery, herbal hop aromas. The flavor is very malty with the taste of grains, but with an infusion of rather spicy yeast. It is rather sweet, but not overpoweringly so.

Straight pour from a 12oz pry-off bottle to an oversized wineglass (a Hill Farmstead stem); bottling date of July 27, 2012 and a freshness date of July, 2014 printed in black ink on the neck of the bottle (“PKG ON 07/27/12 BEST BY 07/2014”). This is from Ommegang’s most recent mixed 8-pack.

Appearance (4.25): The beer pours with a solid finger of bone-white head, which is kind of crackly. It dies off to leave a ring around the edge of the glass, and scattered suds around the sides but no more substantial lacing than that. The body is a hazy, glowing orange color, and very, very pretty.

Smell (4.25): Mostly some warm spice character (cloves, white pepper, some coriander), mixing with kind of a broad palate of fruit notes: white grapes, lemons, some orange / tangerine citrus, melons). But, there’s some green, herbal, leafy character thrown in there, too, adding a nice dimension. Great set of aromas.

Taste (4.25): Really great stuff here—that fruitiness in the nose transforms into a bright, sweet, pungent yeast component that offers mellow melon tones, sweet orange, pear juice, and somewhat vinous white grape flavors—but they’re all cut through with flashes of tart lemon, and permeated by a warming spiciness and a bready wheat character. There’s some very subtly tart wheat that complements the fruitiness with its starchy, filling flavor while offsetting the tart lemon and citrus character.

Mouthfeel (4.5): The body is a bit on the full- side of medium-feeling, with a velvety, tingling carbonation that foams slowly and fully on the way down. . It finishes surprisingly dry, with the slightly vaporous feel of alcohol while that tart lemon character dries things out on its own. This feels great, for the style.

Overall (4.25): This is a really, really great beer if you’re into BSPAs. At its high points, it showcases the Chouffe and Ommegang strains in a way that they complement one another. You can actually tell them apart in some ways, but they meet at certain points, too, particularly in the tart, lemony character. This is without a doubt one of my favorite American-made Belgian-style beers, and I’m going to look forward to this from Ommegang in the future, as well.

I poured this into a goblet and had about one and a half fingers of foam. The coloring is a very cloudy blonde from the active yeast.

The nose on this beer is very minimal. I get some grain in there, as well as the belgian presence off the yeast.

In the body I get the pleasant mix of blonde flavors. I like the belgian characteristics.

This is a pretty good blonde.

We twist the cage and cork and pour brew of glowing, very pale golden yellow. It holds a brief two finger head of fatty white bubbles. This leaves spots of lacing and a big aggregates across the top of the liquid. Haze is thick, and flecks of amorphous yeasty sediment are suspended throughout the liquid. Carbonation appears on the lighter side. The aroma gives wheaty, pale Belgian malts, light vanilla bean, souring green olive flesh, light hoppy grassiness, metallic yeast, orange flesh sweetness, and faint phenolic clove pucker. With warmth comes more bread and butter of malts, soured citrus, booze, and light musky oak. Our first impression is that it has the malty, Belgian backing of the standard Duvel, but it is much sweeter and less drinkable. As we sip, the flavoring opens with those same aromatic Belgian malts mixing with phenolic clove, orange flesh, syrupy fig sugars, lemon rind, and sweeter Belgian yeast. These blend to the peak, giving a warming, boozy, and bready punch. We also get more black pepper of alcohol, and an enhanced, sticky sweetness of dark fruits of fig and strawberry. The finish washes with buttery diacetyls, musky and dusty yeast, brown apple sweetness, red cherries, peach sugars, light grassy and nectary hops, more phenolic clove, and metallic, bready spiciness. The aftertaste breathes of dill leaves, black pepper, booze, metallic and sweeter Belgian yeast, musk, orange flesh, chalk, and generally Belgian pale malt grit. The body is medium to full, and the carbonation is medium. There is creamy, syrupy coating all around the mouth, with sticky coolness and drip. A final, light and toasty astringent dryness streaks down the tongue and palate by the very end. The abv is appropriate, and the beer sips easily.

Overall, what we liked best about this brew was the spice and muskiness through the finish of the flavoring. This imparted a genuine Belgian feel and flavor, as is seen with most of Ommegang’s offerings. The high abv, overt fumy booze, and warming qualities kept things interesting. Where we lost points was in the sweetness of the flavoring, which became a bit cloying by the end, and cut the pale and inherent drinkability of the style. Otherwise things were tasty, and we’ll be happy to see what another few months does to this guy.

750ml, caged and corked bottle, from the gift pack available here in Alberta. Ah, a collaboration with the corporate overlords, good to see everybody playing nice.

This beer pours a hazy, medium apricot hue, with a bit of swirling sediment (I was careful!), and a solid five fingered head (wait, what?), which is bubbly, foamy, and just off-white, and leaves some nice honeycomb lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of semi-sweet pale grainy malt, some tart orchard fruit - nectarine, apple, and unripe pear, dry banana chip esters, mild black pepper and clove spiciness, a white wine barrel vinous essence, and a muted honeysuckle meadow simulacrum. The taste is sweet Euro-bakery pastry malt, some subtle, blended table-top bowl fruitiness - apple and banana, chiefly, a gently spiced warming, like rum cake, or gingerbread and a glass of Fino sherry - whatevs - and softly herbal, grassy hops.

The carbonation is present, dated, stamped, and subsequently forgotten, the body a decent medium weight, and genuinely smooth, but with a slight sugar solution caveat. It finishes fairly off-dry, but with a crazy balancing mechanism, which I fear I may never quite flesh out, as the malt sweetness is deftly tempered by an olio of pleasantly innocuous, hard to pin down offsets.

Wowzers. So, firsties, this style is more or less near the bottom of my list of favourites, and yet this offering has to go and mess with that bias, so much so that I'm now the bad guy in this sad trope. Secondly, mea culpa, a BSPA can, indeed kick major ass, as evidenced by the hefty, layered, fruity, boozy (not that you can actually taste it) goodness harnessed herein. A bit too bad about its pricey intro to these parts, but I'll say it: totally worth it. Oh, and somehow I'm just getting the beer's name: gnomes are Brasserie D'Acchouffe's thing, and that fits so well in a pun with this brewer's name, so...um, that's it. Word.

Let's give this a shot and see if the beer is really worth cellaring like I am doing. Loud pop upon opening, but not a lot of bubbles. The pour revealed a couple fingers of light yellow head on a slightly cloudy, pure gold body. Smell is quite nice. Not a lot of Belgian yeast or banana, but rather some clove and a sour/sweetness. Slightly metalic. The flavor is a lot of sweet. Red apple, cinnamon, and artificial candy. Mouth is light and well carbonated.

Overall, a decent golden, but nothing to write home about. A little too artificial on the sweet but otherwise quite a nice balance.

This one is really cool and a great beer for that special occasion. At 9.5% ABV and very strong it is not your everyday beer unless you tax shelters like Romney.
Oh Yeah, He’s Mormon and this heavenly beverage is Forbidden Fruit. LOL

Back to the review; this one needs to be warmed up quite a bit if you store it in a normal fridge.

I am drinking the 750ML bottle. This one is bottle conditioned and loaded with live yeast. This beer pours a golden slightly cloudy color. With a very creamy thick rich head that rises fast and settles slow leaving incredible lacing down the class that clings till you wash the glass!

Once it is warm the complexity of the flavors really comes out. My only complaint about this beer is how strong the alcohol flavor is. Other than that it is an excellent brew. The flavors are sweet malt, slight to moderate hops, bread, nutmeg, coriander, vanilla and pepper.

The mouthfeel is rich and smooth but is offset by the alcohol.

Poured from bottle into tulip. Pours a great golden straw color with a good thick head. Great begian yeast, slightly fruity; maybe grape vine like, aromas. Taste is fantastic. Very smooth belgian malts and nice hop flavor, belgian yeast and great fruity complexity. Smooth and very drinkable especially for the very high abv. Such a great beer, and I was so pumped to try it. If you can find it, get it! its such a perfect collaboration.

Pours cloudy orange with a minimal white head.

Very sweet aroma. Smells like gingerbread with some banana, clove and bubblegum with a little funkiness.

Eww way too sweet. Starts off with some cloying sweet bread character. Banana is somewhat presence, but the clove then overpowers and it finishes sweet and clovey. Accentuates all the worst aspects of the style.

Medium bodied with adequate carbonation.

I found this completely horrible. The clove was way overdone and the sweetness provided a weird character. Had I been drinking it by myself, it probably would've ended up down the drain, but I gutted through my ~7 oz.

750mL bottle into a Duvel tulip glass...

A: Pours a slightly hazed orange with a cotton white, two-finger head; leaves some specks and spots of lace.

S: Bread crust and cracker malts; coriander-esque spice with some pepper and fruity yeast tang.

T: Like nose, but a little boozy and fruitier (pear); some lemon thrown into the ester mix, too.

M: Heavy, oily mouthfeel; high carbonation.

O: Drinkability impaired by the booziness and big mouthfeel; nothing really stood out for me with this one.
