A: Big three/four finger head into a pint glass...slowed my pour to let it settle a bit. Airy tan head pops quickly into a half-inch high pillow, with some large webbing. Tons of carbonation streaking up through a murky bronze body.

S: Very interesting. Clearly Belgian yeast by the nose, but the malty character and slight diacetyl presence reek of Scotch ales. Very little hop character. I don't get much heather, but then again, I don't know what it's supposed to smell like.

T: Taste is alright--less Belgian and more Scotch than the nose would indicate, I think. The Belgian yeast comes out most in the middle of the sip, which starts slightly buttery and ends with some smoke and bitter malt. Just a touch boozy. Toward the end there's a vaguely grassy flavor that I'll attribute to the heather, even though it reminds me a bit of Poperings Hommelbier. Overall, a tasty, unique hybrid-ish style. Goes to show you the power of yeast in a recipe.

M: Pretty spot-on body. Good carbonation assists the otherwise incongruous yeast and malt combo. A bit chewy, as befits its somewhat cloudy appearance.

D: Not bad. Some Scotch ales can be too boozy for drinking in anything like a large volume, but this is right in my wheelhouse. Another good beer from Ommegang. Certainly an interesting style, and worth drinking at least once--though I'm not sure if it would place into my regular rotation if these were more widely available.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/2/2010. Pours lightly hazy dark brick red color with a nice 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big molasses, raisin, toffee, toast, caramel, chocolate, pepper, earth, clove, floral, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity. Taste of raisin, pear, molasses, toffee, toast, chocolate, biscuit, caramel, nuttiness, pepper, earth, floral, and yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of raisin, molasses, toffee, toast, chocolate, nuttiness, pepper, and earth on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity and balance of flavors that are nicely robust; zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent scotch ale with a Belgian twist. Very well balanced, robust, and complex; very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this one. Glad I was finally able to try it.

Single finger head with scattered lacing in a murky amber body. Nice lacing. Aroma is toffee, caramel, candy sugar and sour cherry. Flavor follows with cherry, caramel malts, candy sugar and toasted malts. Mollasses and toffee late in the finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Nice maltiness for the style. Light on the hops. A few surprise notes for the style.

Reviewed from tasting notes.

Hazy darker brown color, one and a half fingers of foam that lasts for about a minute, leaving minimal lacing behind on the inner surface of the glass. Smells of caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, and just a garnish level touch of peat smoke. Flavor contains all of these elements and also a medium strength nutty element and some suggestions of plums... Body is smooth and silky, medium carbonation. If I had to criticize something, it would be that I had a hard time finding the Heather promised within. It only appeared as a ghostly faint presence once allowed to warm up.

I had this beer poured from a bomber into a wine glass.

A: Amber Hue, Passes Some Light, White Head Ring, Some Lacing

S: Mild Caramel, Mild Belgian Sugars

T: Caramel, Mild Coffee, Mild Belgian Sugars

M: Average Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet

Overall, it definitely has fallen off with age.

A- This beer has a hazy pecan brown body with a sea of microbubbles pushing to the surface with a slightly sticky light tan meniscus of foam.

S- The pot caramel melanoidin aroma with nougat notes has some peat smoke hints in the finish.

T- The slightly bright tartness has a tang to it that blends with pot caramel and dry toffee and cardboard hints. There is a watery taste that grows as the beer warms and the finish has a smoky band-aid hint in the background that hangs on after each sip.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a full texture on the tongue and no alcohol heat.

O- The tangy flavor and malt with peat and band-aids is a bit off putting and the malt is nice full but a bit too dry to really show of the malt flavor.

Fills a pint glass dark old copper with clear, ruby iridescence and boiling carbonation. A creamy four fingers of almond foam builds for a long while, ultimately leaving thick patches of lace.

The aroma is equal parts malt and yeast with a suggestion of band-aids. Barnyard aromas try to come out, as do coriander and ginger.

Contains the flavors of caramelized sugar, sweet iced coffee and light bitterness with a lingering astringency in the finish. Oddy, there is a suggestion of shortbread as well.

Slick texture and medium body with shockingly little carbonation given the pour. Cup O Kyndnes is dry and almost chalky.

This beer needs food such as pasta with tomato sauce.
