A new release served at Max's Belgian Beer Festival 2008. This is a saison brewed with gewurz grapes.
A: The ale is a pale straw yellow color. Haziness pervades the beer, creating a deeper color as a result. A small patch of head rested atop the beer but each serving that I had (several chalices worth) was filled to the mouth.
S: The nose runs the whole gamut of farmhouse flavors, slightly tart with lots of barnyard funk, smelly almost stinky horseblankets and peppery zest. Adding a unique scent to the beer is the gewurz grapes; they are sweet with a sugary body that is quite strong.
T: The gewurz grapes are a wonderful addition to the ale; they sweeten up the intensely funky notes. The saison body is far more funky than Hennepin, lots of barnyard tartness throughout. The grapes take some of the edge off of the funkness, sweeting up the taste. The grapes are sweet, green/white without the tartness that comes with muscat grapes. The result is the sweetness of an after dinner gewürztraminer with the horse blanket taste of Fantome. Based on the timing of this release, this could be Phil Leinhart's first beer as head brewmaster. If it is, I think that we are in capable hands.
M: The grapes are great, far sweeter than muscat grapes and therefore less bitter. The funkiness of the saison is great, easily giving Hennepin and Fantome a run for their money.
D: I had 3 chalices at Max's. This beer is a winner, yet another bee in Ommegang's bonnet. I can only hope that this one is bottled in the near future.
