The beer begins as a malty brown ale, comprised of Belgian aroma, caramel malts, and oats. A bit of lactose adds body and some sweetness, and a heaping helping of cocoa nibs in the whirlpool provides further richness, and a deep chocolaty aroma. Hop aroma is nonexistent, and bitterness is there just to keep the sweetness in check.

We worked with our great friends at Stagecoach Coffee in Cooperstown to come up with a custom coffee blend that complimented our base beer. Sumatra, Papua New Guinea, and French roast form a combination with chocolate, earth, spice, fruit, and light roast characteristics. Following primary fermentation the beer is cold crashed and yeast is removed. Coffee is added to a secondary tank and the beer is circulated through the freshly roasted beans to extract even more flavor and aroma.

Copper with a 1/2" tan head, which fades to a wisp. Light lacing.

Aroma of coffee, spices, Belgian yeast.

Taste follows nose: coffee, spices, Belgian yeast. A touch of caramel.

Thin bodied, light carbonation. Dry, astringent finish.

A good ale. I'd like it better if it was a stout.

A dogfish Head snifter fills with a thick, creamy, yellowish head that towers above for the duration. Tiny bubbles of carbonation rise as a curtain within a clear reddish-amber. A thick coating of lace forms bulbous rings with each sip.

Coffee is barely perceptible, under a soapy vail. Otherwise there is little of note, and all rather faint.

Given the aroma, I found the flavor to be surprisingly rich, though muddled. Some spice, fruit, and grains mix with coffee as an afterthought. The sweetness and bitterness balance well, while spicy malt covers all but a suggestion of tartness or sourness. The finish lingers, carrying grainy flavors.

Full bodied, with alcohol as expected, or slightly lighter than expected. The texture is soft and doughy, with fine carbonation.

I had hoped for bold aroma and flavor characteristics, and was disappointed. However, as I released my expectations, this beer fit well will a relaxed atmosphere.

Bottle was an Anniversary gift from my wife. Bottle to pint glass.
Aroma is coffee, obviously.
Appearance: Medium brown.
Taste: some Wang, Soy, bread.
Thin feel, low carb.

Interesting and different. Not bad, but nothing to go seeking out.

22 oz bottle with a Best By date of 3/2016 and its 6/2016. Poured into a Pilsner glass. Look, lighter copper color than i was expecting but huge 3 to 4 finger cream head. Aroma: funky coffee smell, interesting but strange. Taste: Ohhh yeah, this is a delicious coffee ale. Not quite as good as Founders Sumatra, but not disappointed at all even with is being slightly old. Coffee for days with slight himts of raisins, fruit, and caramel finish. Mouth Feel: Surprisingly creamy yet still carbonated enough to make it refreshing. Overall: Will definitely but this again, especially if its fresh but its really expensive ($15 for a 22 oz. Bomber) so not often. Very surprised at how good it was and especially happy even with the high cost!

Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass.

L: Pours a dark mahogany brown color. Two fingers of thick creamy white head leave great lacing.

S: This part I didn't like as much. Some roast coffee, but faint... and a sort of funk that didn't entirely work.

T/F: Malty up front... dark fruits dominate. Mild coffee and cocoa, but subdued.... and this is definitely a good thing as it lets the other flavors take charge. Dark candies and caramel... creamy mouthfeel and very smooth. Definitely warming.

O: Absolutely delicious beer. Wasn't a huge fan of the aroma, but great flavor profile and it was not overwhelming with the coffee or cocoa... basically a Belgian strong with some added ingredients. Very nice little beer. Glad I grabbed two bombers.
