Beer is on point for the style, has that slightly meaty smoky BBQ flavor of German classics. Despite smokiness it is not acrid nor astringent. Very easy drinking yet definitely does not skimp on flavor, robust yet approachable. Excellent balance. On par with an imported rauchbier.

Poured into a 13 oz Weyerbacher tulip glass canned on 9/30/15. Pours an attractive reddish orange with a 3 finger sticky off white head that coats the sides of the glass with tons of lace.
Smell is smoke, caramel, leather, prunes, and peat.
Taste follows but, not nearly as over top smoke as the nose. Caramel, leather, tobacco, vanilla, prunes, play a supporting role to the in your face smoke.
Mouthfeel is less than medium, plenty of carbonation though there is a creamyness to it, not really dry, and it goes down easy enough .
Overall I am going judge this as a style I am not very familiar with and not my bag of tricks. It tastes much better than it smells.

Very dark amber with a beige finger of foam. Smoke, caramel malt, leather and slight dark fruit. Taste just has smoke and caramel, more potent than smell, but loses the depth and complexity to a degree. Feel is malty, smoky, yet has a crisp finish that ascends quickly in the mouth... like smoke!

I purchased this from Market Basket supermarket in Londonderry, NH but have seen it at quite a few places such as Lazy Dog, Quick Stop and The Drinkery (all Londonderry, NH). A shoprt time later it showed up at the Triangle Mobil at the intersection of route 28 and 128 in Londonderry. Most recently, I saw it at a recent trip to T-Bones butcher shop on Union St. in Manchester, NH so it is definitely being introduced quickly in the area. It is sold in a 6-pack of cans with that hateful and difficult to remove plastic carrier that snaps onto the top of the cans. I was intrigued when I saw the words “smoked ale” on the can. I have never had a ‘rauchbier’ before so I figured I would give this a try.
Appearance: Poured into a glass to reduce the metal taste that you can sometimes get with canned beers. This pours amber with a fairly thick tan head that slowly dissipated.
Smell: A smoky and slightly hoppy introduction to my first rachbier. Not unpleasant at all and brings nuances of bacon, ham and other smoked meats to mind just from smelling it. Loving it.
Feel: A tiny bit more carbonated than I would like personally, but it makes it feel like a great drinking ale. I think if it was a little heavier and slightly less carbonated, it would have been absolutely perfect.
Taste: Here is where the fun came in for me. After the initial smell of this ale, I was expecting a bit of a letdown with the flavor, BUT the opposite occurred. The smokiness brings in feelings of barbequed meats and even smoked cheeses. Not that it tastes like cheese, but it has a similar smokiness level to smoked cheddar or smoked gouda. I had three other people try this ale and two others picked up that suggestion of cheese where it does not exist.
Overall: I find this a great ale to have when you are planning on having more than one or two throughout the day. I have experimented by drinking this with barbequed sirloin tips, BLT’s, several cheeses and even Cheez-It crackers - and this beer is very complimentary to all of them. Definitely different and highly recommended!

Bought a single 12oz can ($1.90) at The Beer Store and am diving into it at the moment....
Poured into a small tulip, it has a lovely, rich, deep chestnut color. It is mostly clear, with some steady carbo straggling towards the surface. Head is a 1/4" layer of creamy beige foam. There's a decent bit of lace sticking around, too. Aroma is lusciously smoky, with some toasted malt thrown in. Body is mostly medium, and it has a light bit of prickle and airyness on the tongue.
Taste has some caramel and more toasty malt, plus a nice layer of smoked malt lingering close by. But it does have a lot of bitterness throughout. Another characteristic I pick up is something leaning towards being herbal. It's interesting, but a bit offbeat for a Rauchbier. The finish is quite dry, with the smoky notes lingering a bit. Would have liked a bit more malty sweetness in lieu of the bitterness, but it is a decent brew, all-in-all. Prosit!
