473ml Can

Appearance – Clear copper colour with an average size fizzy off-white/light beige coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation visible and there is a fairly good amount of lacing. The head lasted for around 7 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, toffee, grains

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel+toffee, and some light hops. There is also a bit of an adjunct taste.. corn etc. It ends with a malty/toffee sweet aftertaste with a tiny bit of lingering hop bitterness.

Overall – An above average beer that wasn't a waste of money. There are some good flavours going on, but I was a little bit disappointed by some of it's adjunct qualities. The alcohol seemed well hidden and it has a decent appearance. Not something I'd buy again though.

Pours a hazy, golden-amber colour with a large, soapy white head that burns off quickly without leaving much lace and settles as a thin collar and film.

Wet grains/grasses, booze, fruit juice, sweet malts, corn syrup. Reminds me of smelling an empty day old can.

Earthy, boozy taste. Burnt grains. Overly sweet with no real body to back it up. Finish is syrupy and dirty.

Mouthfeel is way too thin, just nothing here to contrast the cloying taste. Carbonation is moderate to high. Aftertaste is again syrupy, with an astringent, plastic-like tone.

Found it hard to even get through one, I have no reason to ever try this again.

Appearance - Pours a hazy medium amber colour with a 1/2 finger width of bubbly white head that fades quickly.

Smell - Sweet apple, pear, faint grassy hops. Not much else happening.

Taste - Sweet apple and caramel malts. The hops are non-existent. Almost tastes like caramel syrup.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium bodied with light carbonation. A little sticky.

Overall - An overly sweet red lager by Waterloo. Hard to get past all the sugary notes in this brew. Aromas and flavours need more development (both are a little one note). The base is there - just needs more rework.

look: 2.5 | smell: 2 | taste: 2 | feel: 1.5 | overall: 2

Appearance: It started with a thumb of head, but it vanished in incredibly short order so no lace either. The body is a fairly hazy orange with decent carbonation.

Smell: Some light malt with a touch of acid and that's about it. Just not enough there to write home about.

Taste: Starts with a mild does of malt that the carbonation really tries to help, but just can't seem to do it. It builds up but a plastic chemical taste begins to accent. A touch of woodsy hops make far too weak a play, far too late to do anything about it, and the solvent alcohol twang and the end can't seem to fight it back either.

Mouthfeel: Far too cloying, I mean the carbonation does try to help the beer out but it leaves a filmy sensation and the carbonation falls flat halfway through the beer. Lack of head also doesn't help it's case. Transitions very abruptly as well.

Drinability: Well it didn't get the drain but the cloying aspect really stops this beer at one and really, that's been generous. It's not what I would call smooth, or refreshing.

Final Thoughts: This was a darn shame, I saw this beer's decent score and thought maybe Brick's series of "Waterloo" beers had finally produced a pearl. Sadly much like most of Brick's offerings, better examples are readily available for nearly the same cost. A darn shame.

473mL can from a mixed sampler pack from the brewery's beer store. No longer called "Brick Amber", it's now labelled as "Waterloo Authentic Amber" due to the brewery's ongoing efforts to distance themselves from the "Brick" name (although the distinctive hogs head remains in the brewery's logo)

Poured into a nonic. Light caramel amber, pour yields a hefty bit of froth, which settles into a thick ring.

Nose is citrus, sweet caramel, a bit of bread perhaps. Very faint.

Very sweet, borderline cloying. This is a simple amber ale, with only the faintest hint of woodsy or pine flavor that the pack label refers to. A touch of vanilla. Malt isn't bad. Mercifully, the finish is somewhat tart, and there is a bit of booze punch there as well. Heavier than your standard amber ale, carbonation is vigorous. Slightly oily.

Not bad, certainly drinkable, but not one I'm likely to seek out again.

473ml can. The first, I believe, for this brewer in Alberta.

This beer pours a clear, pale golden amber hue (whiskey colour, eh? What the hell kind of whisk(e)y do you guys drink?), with three fat fingers of puffy, foamy off-white head, which leaves some high-flying striated lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells fairly sour at first, hard to discern the origin, as neither the hops nor malt proffer outright culpability. Soon enough, it's made clear that the hops are more or less inert, and the malt is of the corny, grainy macro bent, and the extra booze just fuels the fire. The taste is, well the taste is a big 'ol smack to one's better senses of glycerol evil. Gah. Metallic alcohol, corn mash, overripe apple, and spineless earthy hops. Urg.

The carbonation is average, a prick here, a prick there, you get the idea; the body a seriously clammy medium weight, and too gag-worthy to reliably discuss smoothness. It finishes sweet, but not in any good way - boozy, edgy, and pithy.

Wow - the lengthy description on the can led me to briefly believe a whole shitload of fairy tales - especially the one about this being aged in oak, though they don't actually mention barrels, so, who the fuck knows. This is really quite easy (though maybe I got an off-can) - a gussied-up malt liquor, nothing more.

Can from the LCBO, 473ml into a tulip. Date code is H1911, presumably August 19, 2011.

Hazy and slightly brownish orange, billowing offwhite head and a ton of carbonation. Sticky webbed lacing and decent retention. Nose is off, bready and lightly toasty. A touch of caramel but there's some prevalent mustiness, straw, dirty socks and dirty stagnant water feel to it. Off-putting. Taste is a bit of a step up, but metal, oxidized apple, caramel breadiness and an out-of-place bitterness come together to make this not the most pleasant experience. Quite sweet finish. Medium carbonation and a medium-sized body as well. Wouldn't revisit this one, couldn't make it through the can. Pass.

473 ml can.

A- Nice light amber colour with just a touch of a brassy/coppery orange/red. Nice foamy head that leaves lacing.

S- Sour note plus malt. Touch of smokiness. Faint lemony citrus.

T- Surprisingly mild middle. Pleasant grassy-citrussy hops with a fairly strong bitter hops finish. Smoky notes present but not strong. I found the malt flavours did not come through enough to properly balance the beer.

MF- Crisp with medium-light body.

O- Lighter flavoured and bodied than expected from the description on the can. Fairly good overall.

16oz can into imperial wizen glass.

A-Crystal clear whisky pour with two fingers off white head. Lacing is remarkable.

S- Caramel and toffee notes, there is a slight grassy hop with a touch of cereal. Vanilla and wood earthiness.

T- Sweet malts with caramel. Not getting the spiciness the can says but I am getting vanilla and brown sugar with a grain smoothness. Alcohol is invisible. With a touch of hop finish.

M- Light to medium bodied, smooth carbonation and lingering finish.

O- There was a bit of hype following this one, it's very good I'm definitely impressed!

A very different kind of beer that I am only starting to appreciate as I near the bottom. Initial sips struck me as a simple "caramelized lager" and thin, but the earthiness is coming more to the forefront as it warms. Rye and whisky notes predominant in both the aroma as well as the taste, with the caramelized malt sweetness merging into a pleasantly dry finish with tannic undertones. Can't place all the flavours, but it's nowhere near as single dimensional as I'd first thought.

Have to give The Brick credit for this one! Although it's not a taste profile I'd personally choose, it does indeed have flavour and perhaps bodes well for future offerings...

A - Pours an orange/golden colour, reminds me of Tim Hortons peach drank. Moderate carbonation coming up. One finger of soapy white head with small bubbles. Bright. No lace and a soapy cap of small retention.

S - Lot's of caramel, buttery notes, floral hops, vanilla.

T - Vanilla again, caramel, gentle oak, some grassy hops and that buttery essence again. Not bad.

M - Well carbonated, a medium body that inches close to full, and an oaky/vanilla lingering note.

O/D - Almost an Innis and Gunn clone IMO. It's an easy drinking, yet complex and enjoyable lager. Nothing special, but worth a shot.

473 mL can; a newcomer to the local LCBO. Even though the admittedly few offerings I've had from this brewery have been unremarkable, the blurb on the back of this can has at least got me interested in trying it. I always appreciate a good amber, they remind me that beers don't need to be especially complex or intense to be enjoyable.

Pours a slightly hazy, light copper-amber colour. A finger of creamy off-white head sits atop the liquid, wilting only after a lengthy period. Not much lacing. The aroma is a bit faint but otherwise pleasant; lightly roasted caramel malts, a bit of oak and some alcohol give it a whisky vibe. A little too sweet for my nose.

I won't deny it, I like this stuff. Plenty of sweet caramel malt, some roasted grains, with just the slightest hint of vanilla and woodiness. The ethanol is noticeable, but not off-puttingly so, and it's obvious they were going for a whisky feel anyway so I can appreciate it - the booze works nicely with the oak and generally sweet profile. Some spicy, herbal notes as well. Lasting finish, where the earthy hops and rye finally begin to overtake the weakening caramel sweetness. Medium-bodied, with a bit of stickiness on the palate. Enough carbonation to keep it feeling fairly crisp.

Easily the best, and probably most imaginative Waterloo brew I've had yet, and a fine amber all around. If you had to choose only one Brick beer to drink, this would be an excellent option.

473ml can shared with MrManning. Pours amber orange in colour with a thin off-white cap and generous spotted lacing on the tulip. Bizarre nose of cooked veggies, slight caramel, creamed corn, hint of oak barrel, seaweed, smoke, and faint floral hops. Taste is malty-sweet caramel, mild woodiness, weedy hops, limp spiciness transitions to a vanishing aftertaste. No bitterness to be found here, and aside from adding some VERY subtle spicy-woody notes, the rye and whiskey malts are barely detectable. Mouthfeel is light-bodied, almost watery, quick flash of spice, long drying finish borders on chalky. Overall, Waterloo Amber is drinkable enough, but it lacks the bold flavours and character that I expect from a strong amber lager. Unfortunately this is just as undistinguished as Brick's other offerings, and I won't be purchasing again.
