Notes:
Grand Teton’s Double IPA was born in our renowned Cellar Reserve program. Fans of our Double IPA and XX Sweetgrass demanded we brew the style on a regular basis. In response, we created Lost Continent in 2009 and updated it for 2010. This year's version is brewed with well over three pounds of hops per barrel in the kettle and another half-pound per barrel of “dry hops” in two additions during conditioning. A revised fermentation program has produced a more traditional Double IPA flavor profile--drier, less malty, more hoppy.

We use only American Pacific Northwest hops. Galena hops are added early in the boil for smooth, balanced bitterness. We add Columbus, Centennial and Amarillo later in the boil for flavor, and Columbus, Centennial and Simcoe in the whirlpool for aroma.

For even more aroma, we dry-hop with Summit, Columbus, Amarillo and Cascade hops in the conditioning tank, and dry-hop again right before bottling with whole-flower Cascade hops. The result is fruity, floral and complex, with notews of tangerine zest and fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice.

Idaho 2-Row Brewers’ Malt and German CaraHell and Vienna malts give this ale its lovely pale copper hue, with flavors of orange marmalade and dried apricots, supported by a strong backbone of hoppy bitterness.

4oz pour on tap at a tasting a while back. review is from notes

a typical, if not a little light colored, look to the beer, small head. smell isn't powerfull, but good. tangerine and wheat. taste is bitter and juicy, citrus and pine stank. feel isn't too cloying, but a tad heartburn inducing.

very good, bright flavors

Struck out with JL's in Fargo on an Easter Sunday, so stopped by Maxwell's instead. They had a passable (albeit expensive) beer selection, with this one of the more interesting selections.

The beer pours an orange amber color with prety good head retention and lacing. The nose is nice enough... there was plenty of dry citrus and light pine, along with some noticeable sweet malt as well. The flavor profile replicated the nose pretty closely in this well balanced DIPA. The combination of malt and hoppy bitterness seemed to impart something of an apple melon flavor on the mid palate, with a moderately long, modestly bitter finish. I prefer my IPA's and DIPA's to have a bit more of a hop bite to them, but this wasn't bad. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, with a fairly long, lightly bitter finish. Alcohol was fairly well integrated into the flavor profile, though I could tell the abv. wasn't too overwhelming in this one (I would have been shocked to see it over 10%).

Nothing awe inspiring here, but nevertheless, a decent DIPA from the folks at Grand Tetons.

Lost Continent Double IPA poured a dark hazy golden color, with very little head. There was a very strong dry floral hoppy aroma. The taste was rather hoppy, lots of floral flavors, but wasn't to the point of burning the palate. Wished this had a dry flavor afterwards, but still a strong floral flavor. Overall a good beer, I found it a little different for a double ipa without the dryness.

Second draft for my 4th of July stop at Monk's House of Ale Repute. Almost white head on a clear, two-toned amber ale in a tulip glass. Again, a pretty lace (in a well cleaned glass) which funnels a strong grapefruit, tropical fruit and pine resin into the nose. 8% ABV is hidden in the nose, but a light peppery note betrays it on the tongue, which is assaulted by spice and sweet malt and an oiliness that coats sweetly. Very fun Double IPA, and, from memory, seems to be a bit brighter on draft. Not exactly news that a draft surpasses a bottle, but there seems to be a significant boost to the hops for this particular beer (or the bottles I've sampled were not up to snuff).

On tap at Whole Foods.

P: murky, saffron gold body. Thin yet dense, bone white head. Leaves some pretty good lacing for such a tiny head.

A: Biscuit malts, onions, spice and pine. Faint whiff of alcohol.

T: Honey covered biscuits. Eases into the hop flavors, floral with a touch of pepper. Then moves into a stout bitterness, with flavors of pine and earth. The bitterness dries the mouth out, leaving your tongue screaming for water. Very crisp throughout the drink.

A solid DIPA. Another good brew from this brewery.

On Tap at the Coddingtown Whole Foods Tap Room is Santa Rosa.

A: Hazy light orange color. Has a very nice head about an inch thick with good retention and lacing.

S: Pine Sol. I was hoping for some nice citrus aromas or a good malt balance and I got neither. This had a pine smell that was just not very appealing.

T: A bit better than the smell. It at least didn't taste like pine sol. Still, not a great balance. Mediocre at best.

M: Solid. Medium to heavy body with good carbonation.

O: I see where they were trying to go... I just didn't like it. This was not for me.

On-tap at a wing joint in Idaho Falls, only after walking inside, seeing the taps, and immediately ruing our less than informed waitress on the patio...

This beer appears a cloudy medium apricot hue, with one finger of soapy ecru head, which leaves a broken wall of filmy lace around the glass as it recedes. It smells of bitter grapefruit and orange rind, a mild herbal character, and butterscotch malt. The taste is more bitter pine, herbal, and citrus hops, over a decent bready caramel malt backbone. The carbonation is moderate, the body medium-heavy in weight, smooth, and kind of creamy. It finishes fairly sweet, with a twinge of those lurking herbal hops.

A strong start, and a weakened finish - the hop profile seems to morph along the way - this doesn't make me pine (har de har) for another...

Draft service into a goblet at Brix in Sunset Beach.

A: Slightly hazy and luminous light orange-amber with one finger of persistent off-white foam head. Heavy lacing remains on the glass.

S: Piney hops are featured alongside juicy, semi-dark citrus and a backbone of shy caramel malt--it's there, but it's trying not to be noticed. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins off-dry, with extremely bright and energetic hop aromatics that combine grapefruit juice and zest as well as darker citrus with resinous pine. Acidity lends a further citric quality that elevates the early flavor qualities even more. Flavors deepen in the middle, staying bright, fruity, and aromatic with practically all hops represented. Bitterness develops quickly into the finish, becoming intense, as toasted and caramel malt are able to gain traction. Aromatic flavors, mild by comparison to their previous intensities, linger to the end. No alcohol is detected.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, sticky on the palate and lively with acidity that creates a resonant buzz in the corners of the mouth threatening sensory overload, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This beer stood out as a stellar example of the DIPA style on the day I had it--poured from the tap. Full of layered West Coast hop complexity, it comes across as a focused and carefully-crafted vehicle for hop oil delivery. Although appealing, the smell only began to suggest the world of citrus and pine flavors that awaited in the flavor. As with the best beers, acidity plays a pivotal role that is enhancing, rather than distracting. This beer tasted and felt so fresh that it could have been brewed yesterday, leaving an impression of liveliness and energetic character that makes me look forward to our next encounter. I knew Grand Teton was good: Sweetgrass is a delicious--if inconsistent--hoppy pale ale; Pursuit of Hoppiness is a smooth and appealing imperial red; Trout Hop and Sheep Eater remain my favorites of each of their respective styles. Despite my favorable history with the brewery and its other products, I was caught completely off-guard by this brilliant DIPA that, I now realize, is tragically under-valued even with its B+ rating here. This is in top-tier DIPA territory, without a doubt.

Had on draft at American Craft in Brookline, MA in May 2010.

Pours a nice copper color with a beautiful thick head. Leaves heavy lacing.

Smells of grapefruit and sweet malt. Very aromatic.

Malt and big sweetness up front which somewhat dominates the first sip. The hop character is there in the back. Balances out more as sips continue, with citrus from the hops.

A full bodied beer but nothing too thick.

A great brew but for a DIPA, I was looking for something a little stronger on the hops.

Presentation: Snifter, poured on-tap

Appearance: Hazy burnt orange beer with a really impressive cream colored cap with great retention

Smell: Tons of bright piney goodness, with a touch of grapefruit in the background....just a hint of toasty caramel malt in the very back

Taste: More balanced than expected...there's lots of piney hop character, with some sweet candied citrus as well...there's a heavy hit of sweet candy-caramel to balance out the hops however. There's a medium juicy bitterness on the finish. This is not nearly as crazy as I thought it would be; indeed, it's quite tame for a IIPA.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full bodied

Drinkability: Pretty high for the abv/style

Conclusion: This was not a bad beer by any means, and was one of the more balanced IIPAs I've ever had...I think that was my problem with it. It was almost too balanced; I love my IPA's to be nicely balanced; IIPAs should (IMO) kind of be a sucker punch to the gut. This one just didn't do it for me. Perhaps this would be a good introduction/way to ease into the style.

A very acceptible DIPA. Appearance is a deep copper complimented by a small head and oily lacing. Smell is good- albeit faint for a DIPA, light hops and sweet malt with a bit of pepper and lemon. Taste is similar but with a bit more strength, I pick up slight alcohol here as well. Mouthfeel is deep and oily with medium carbonation. Very drinkable.

this is my first review so go easy on me... this beer was nothing like an ipa not even close to a dipa at least in my mind .... i wanted hops to just jump all over me, instead i get a sweet fruity flavor with no earthy, piny bitterness, with a full mouth feel which i have never experienced before in an ipa (which i admittedly enjoyed after putting ipa out of my mind)... had a much more full/rich body then i'm used to wit an ipa... i hated the first few sips but after i changed my mind set away from an ipa it was actually extremely enjoyable... a great brew but i don't know where they get off calling it an dipa for supposedly being a 90 on the ibu very unsatisfactory but as an overall drink.... quite tasty... had founders red rye pa on the same night which is supposed to be only 70 compared to the 90 ibu`s which was far more bitter and to my expectations.... over all though a great beer.... just now what i expected from a dipa I WOULD DRINK THIS AGAIN WITH OUT A DOUBT... just wouldn't drink it on a hot summer day expecting a bitter sweetness from the hops.

Bottled on date of 03/07/13

Appearance - Pours a hazy, rustic orange with an off-white finger width head. Fair retention, resulting in a broken layer of microbubbles across the surface. Lacing is spotty at best with little stick.

Smell - Juicy hop aroma, with orange and stone fruit character leading the bill.

Taste - Follows the nose. Juicy fruits dominate the palate; orange zest and stonefruit. Slight nuttiness. Malts get a bit lost in the shuffle, but peak through with a ghostly bread like presence. Orange rind bitterness bites in the the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Smooth approach before a bone dry finish.

Overall - Not a bad DIPA, but not one that really stands out from the pack. It's a beautiful label on the bottle, which does stand out from the pack and is mostly the reason for why you're reading this review. Would I buy it again? Maybe, but it's not a beer I'd go and intentionally seek out.

Poured this Double IPA from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Poured a hazy golden color, produced a nice white head, nice retention and left some lacing on the glass. The aroma was unique, it blended grapefruit and tropical fruit. Malt and caramel present as well. Medium in body, a foundation of malted grain, caramel malt, piney hops, and tropical fruit- Sweeter then most IPAs- however the fruity characteristics make this one to put on your list.

I find this is a really Weird way to drink this beer. On nitro, all the sharp IPA corners are totally rounded by the gas. It is creamy and full bodied and has a distinct winey taste. By this, I mean the sweetness and abv of the double really comes through.

A light amber color. Color looks just like on co2. Less head, zero lacing.

S aroma is slightly sweeter and much less intense than on co2.

T again, this is a weird beer on nitro. It has a rich, creamy mouthful. It approaches with a lot of body and finishes with an almost chech pilsner or rye flavor and nearly no hops yet a present abv. A sincerly winey finish. A subtle bitterness lingers.

M creamy, full bodied and present. Think whole milk or cream, not skim.

O overall, this is a solid beer from prior tastings. Nitro changes the ball game entirely and makes it a much more buttery, full bodied beer. I suggest this as an awkward gateway beer from heavy white ales and Belgians to IPAs. A favorite beer but not my favorite execution of it. I prefer co2 for this one. My girlfriend might like it, though.

22 Oz poured into the "Official Kronenbourg Tasting Glass"... Have to say, of all of the Grand Teton Brew Co's beers i've tried, this is my least favorite. It isn't bad in any way, just not exceptional like the rest of their beers. Poured a bit hazy, not quite hefe or wheat, but more than the usual IPA. The head was not thick, but lingered nicely. Aroma was different: hoppy, a tad bit citrus, but not the usual IPA kick. Mouthfeel is a little strange. A definite carbonation buzz to it, which was probably the most unpleasant part of the beer. Reminds me of when I over carbonated the homebrew Irish red and got that metalic flavor. This was a little better than that, but I expect much more from these guys. It's just not as impressive as the rest of their beers. Has a lingering aftertaste that is hop bitter but not in a good way.. more of a fault than a pleasant memory. It's.... allright. Wouldn't buy it again or give it to a friend. Save the money and buy their Belgian styles -that is what they do best. They more than make up for this one.

12 oz bottle was poured into a snifter.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer and left some nice lacing. It is a pale orange yellow hue with some clarity of slow moving bubbles coming up through the glass. Crazy lacing on the glass as the beer was drank too.

Smell: citrus and tangerine notes, some caramel and bready malts.

Taste: Citrus flavors are a bit more noticeable in the first sip. Pineapple, grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, and some lingering bitterness from this hop bomb. Lingering, but mellow and enjoyable. The alcohol is hidden well too.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to full bodied, crisp lingering bitterness, medium carbonation, and quite and enjoyable drink.

Overall: Super hoppy nice. Happy to have scored this single last week and good yo see it held up after 8 months.

A large bomber, with bold foil, picked up at Green's in Columbia, SC. Label states bottle date of 2/24/12.

A - A cloudy orange/amber, with lots of head and sticky lace. Lots of sediment, cloudy, zero clarity. Love it! I will take a cloudy brew over a clear one anyday.

S - Citrus hops and alcohol very present. Pineapple.

T - Sweet up front, major hops! Citrus flavors, pineapple, pears. Very well balanced. Damn tasty

M - Full bodied, well carbonated. Smooth.

O - This one is 9 months old, and I think it has aged very well from a DIPA to a strong ale. Hops still kick. Very good. Will look for this one again.

A little chill haze on the amber brew. Plenty of head in the big chalice.

Really big and blowsy and loaded with hops, just like they promised. Fruity and bitter. Lots of the leafy, vegetable flavor with a touch of wood. I does seem a little more dry than a lot of DIPAs, but it's still plenty malty. Murky is my general impression. Lots of resins and enough hops to kill anything living in this stuff. The excessive bitterness does seem to flame out early, but it leaves an acidic aftertaste. Earthy finish with some older fruit, like peaches that are overripe but not sweet. Just the ticket for those that like them big, hot, and messy.

From the 750 ml bottle bought at Liticker's in Ocean Beach.

Pours a murky orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick and a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. Pours a hazy orange with ample bubbling and a finger-width head which settles to a thin layer. Smell is, naturally, of hops and grapefruit. Not strong, but pleasant. Taste follows suit. Comes in a 4 Pack didn't see it in Bommahs (Mass.MA Accent) but didn't really look. In case you don't know I'd say 5% of BA users a Bomber is a 22-24oz or so Double size beer usually made for non mass produced specialty beers like the Harpoon 100bbl (barrel) series and others like Brooklyn's Local.1 and Local.2 beers which are excellent.

Look L: Bright Golden Hue mid cloudy 40% opacity just a guess no detailed measuring was performed at 3am

Smell (nose)S: Floral hop color Lemon or citrus feel. only first taste I hope I can edit this later this is my virginal review so bear (beer) with me. :)

Taste T: Slow appearance of hop flavour then gradually increases to mid perfect hop happyness hoppYness instead of Iness. Wonderbread style light yeast feel.
Post: Aftertase has a nice slght hop linger to it not over or under pimped

Mouthfeel M: very light body but has a syrupy fluid(liquid) behavior as it moves around the mouth talking to your taste buds and budettes.

Overall O: Great beer definately on my will have in future not an extremely hoppy IPD but it's pretty good and definately hit the spot.

Poured from their foil wrapped 12oz bottle...

Appearance - Pours nearly 2 fingers of yellow eggshell foam, body is a hazy vibrand yellow orange amber,

Smell - Huge citrus, grapefruit, tangerine, and lots of floral hops, touch of honey and yeast, really nice.

Taste - Wow, a perfectly balanced flavor of citrus, grapefruit, tangerine, and just huge floral hops with hints of clover and lavender. A nice drying finish of grapefruit pith and floral pollen comes in at the end.

Mouthfeel - Medium mouthfeel comes from the smoothness of this ale, there is a juiciness from the citrus, and a slight drying from the floral hops. Carb is lower side of medium and is smooth and foaming, no sharp edges here at all, but provides a nice transition to the bitter dtying nuances of the hops at the end of the quaff.

Overall - Really a nice, complex, balanced and well done DIPA. Alcohol is perfectly hidden. For those that like a DIPA with strong citrus and floral hops this is a must try, recommend!
