Notes:
Grand Teton’s Double IPA was born in our renowned Cellar Reserve program. Fans of our Double IPA and XX Sweetgrass demanded we brew the style on a regular basis. In response, we created Lost Continent in 2009 and updated it for 2010. This year's version is brewed with well over three pounds of hops per barrel in the kettle and another half-pound per barrel of “dry hops” in two additions during conditioning. A revised fermentation program has produced a more traditional Double IPA flavor profile--drier, less malty, more hoppy.

We use only American Pacific Northwest hops. Galena hops are added early in the boil for smooth, balanced bitterness. We add Columbus, Centennial and Amarillo later in the boil for flavor, and Columbus, Centennial and Simcoe in the whirlpool for aroma.

For even more aroma, we dry-hop with Summit, Columbus, Amarillo and Cascade hops in the conditioning tank, and dry-hop again right before bottling with whole-flower Cascade hops. The result is fruity, floral and complex, with notews of tangerine zest and fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice.

Idaho 2-Row Brewers’ Malt and German CaraHell and Vienna malts give this ale its lovely pale copper hue, with flavors of orange marmalade and dried apricots, supported by a strong backbone of hoppy bitterness.

Poured this Double IPA from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Poured a hazy golden color, produced a nice white head, nice retention and left some lacing on the glass. The aroma was unique, it blended grapefruit and tropical fruit. Malt and caramel present as well. Medium in body, a foundation of malted grain, caramel malt, piney hops, and tropical fruit- Sweeter then most IPAs- however the fruity characteristics make this one to put on your list.

Struck out with JL's in Fargo on an Easter Sunday, so stopped by Maxwell's instead. They had a passable (albeit expensive) beer selection, with this one of the more interesting selections.

The beer pours an orange amber color with prety good head retention and lacing. The nose is nice enough... there was plenty of dry citrus and light pine, along with some noticeable sweet malt as well. The flavor profile replicated the nose pretty closely in this well balanced DIPA. The combination of malt and hoppy bitterness seemed to impart something of an apple melon flavor on the mid palate, with a moderately long, modestly bitter finish. I prefer my IPA's and DIPA's to have a bit more of a hop bite to them, but this wasn't bad. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, with a fairly long, lightly bitter finish. Alcohol was fairly well integrated into the flavor profile, though I could tell the abv. wasn't too overwhelming in this one (I would have been shocked to see it over 10%).

Nothing awe inspiring here, but nevertheless, a decent DIPA from the folks at Grand Tetons.
